The Baxter Bulletin, Mountain Home, AR - Dec. 12, 1924, pg. 1, col. 1 - Z. M. MORTON (sic)

In the passing away of Z. M. Horton at his home here Wednesday morning the county has lost a valuable citizen, his loved ones a father and husband who lived only for them.

Col. Horton, as he was known to most every one was a man whose life was felt and known far beyond his town and county.  He was a lawyer of unusual ability, having served some of the largest corporations in the state as counsel and taking part in some of the most prominent cases.  The writter a few years ago, in talking with another well known attorney, heard this lawyer pay a tribute to Mr. Horton, in which he has never forgotten.  He said that he had known Mr. Horton all through his legal career and had been in many and all kinds of cases with him, most always on the opposite side, and he had never known or heard of him doing or saying anything other than that which would come from a man of the highest type.  In his passing no once can say that he was ever heard to utter a word against his fellow man.

Mr. Horton was 66 years of age, having been born in Independence County, Arkansas, September 27, 1858.

Thirty-seven years ago he was united in marriage with Miss Katie Hickis.  To them five children were born, four of them now survive him.  The (sic) are, Paul Horton, Detroit, Mich., Mrs. R. P. Sharpe of Pittsburg, Pa., Mrs. Claude Collie and Miss Dorothy Horton.  Miss Dorothy Horton and Mrs. Collie with their mother, were at his bedside when the end came.

Mr. Horton served his county both as County Judge and a member of the Legislature on different occasions.

He was a memeber of the Baptist church and a pioneer member of the Masonic Lodge here.

Funeral service were held at the family residence Thursday morning.  Rev. W. M. Cooper, pastor of the Baptist church conducting the services.
