James Mode Mann was the son of William Thomas Mann and Ida Lizzy Stuard, and the grandson of William L. Mann and City Jane Hooks and Starling Harrison Stuard and Mary C. Savage.

His wife Caroline (Castleberry) Mann was the daughter of Green W. Castleberry and Mary Barnett, and the granddaughter of Jesse L. Castleberry and Harriet Watkins.
