German Church, 1900

From the Clay County  Courier:

"The drive to develop the new County of Clay in Northeast Arkansas inspired land agents to lease huge tracts of farm and timber land to bring in new settlers, many of them immigrans from overseas.  The land North of Corning was featured in such a deal and was sold to new Americans who had just arrived from Germany.

The first settlers in this area rought [sic] their religion along with them and the German Church was established.

The building faced the West but was later moved to face South and Fred Ahrent placed a lighted cross atop the steeple that made it a landmark for many a year on Highway 67 North.  During the sixties, with many of the newer generation living in Corning, a new and most attractive modern church was built on Highway 67 North on Jones Street."
