"Winter Scene on Front Street Shows the Model Hotel..."

"The three gabled two-story frame Model Hotel appeared in the middle of the 400 block on West First as The Akers House during the gay 90's [sic] era.  There is no record of the length of the Akers durance as innkeepers, but the property came into the ownership of Mr. and Mrs. Marcus M. Green before the turn of the century and had a long career as the Green Hotel.  Mother Green, a white-haired patrician-type lady, made roomers aware that she considered them as guests in her home and demanded that they act in a genteel manner.  Marcus looked after the transients' luggage, took charge of the register and filled the other duties of an innkeeper.

"In earlier days the white paling fence on the north extended across the front and the entrance to the hotel was marked by a four-poster structure over the sidewalk.  The glass enclosed top was lighted by a lamp, and travelers who had arrived on the after midnight trains were guided by this dim deacon [sic] to the hotel's entrance.  The fire originated in the hotel kitchen and flames engulfed the Lasater frame warehouse immediately south and also the brick business building to the north."
