Phipps and Arnold Grocery, Corning, 1911

Phipps and Arnold building, Corning, AR.  Located on west side of Second Street between Elm and Vine.  “Phipps and Arnold, 1907, Sheet iron building south of Tezzie Smiths” “Bub Arnold.”  From the Dorlene Arnold estate.

The Phipps and Arnold Grocery, organized by Ferd Phipps and his brother-in-law, J. F. Arnold, Sr., around 1907, had been quartered on Second street, but a block North.  The business had expanded so the proprietors bought the site a block South hitherto held down by Robins’s Livery Stable, and built a modern brick to house the firm and the W. R. Welch City Bakers, a feed store and an upstairs room to serve as Corning’s opera house.  Unfortunately, the front of the building collapsed during construction, so the opera house never materialized.  The building burned around 1926, taking with it the G. B. Oliver law office to the South.
