Looking North on Second Street, Corning, 1910.  "The mule team coming onto West Second from Vine, give the rural touch to an automobile-less street when you could saunter across at will.  The crowd at the far end of the scene is gathered in front of Steinberg's Store, located at that time in the new Hopson Brick addition to the East side of the street.  Steinbergs featured Brown Shoes and the attraction was "Buster Brown and his dog, Tige" who were showing in the afternoon in front of the Steinberg store...

"West Second was still residential at the North half and still a shady street.  The business section was moving North from the court square and all the buildings on the East side had been built since 1907.  The concrete block on the West side had materialized in 1907."

From the Clay County Courier:

"The depression of the 30s was in process when this view of the concrete block on West Second street was made.  Reggie Beloate, who posed for the picture, had razed the sheet iron two room store that had practically fallen in, and from the wreckage had constructed his unique shack to house his old Model T Ford and a sewing machine repair shop.  Companiotte Brothers had taken over the Tezzie Smith store site as a garage, but slow business had forced them to vacate the premises.  The upstairs that had been the Corning Opera House and the Commercial Hotel, was vacant."
