"Every quality family in Corning maintained a horse and carriage to fill in the transportation gap of the pre-automobile era, and the D. N. Thomas family posed for this picture in front of the Postoffice [sic].  The business section of Corning began at the Court Square and extended to the Iron Mountain Depot on Main and the block between Market and Olive was more business than residential.  On the West side facing the square was the Sheeks-Stephens Mercantile, and just to the North, the Beloate drug store and Postoffice [sic].  On the East side of the street one has on view doctor and attorney offices that extended from the alley South of the Simpson home to Market Street."
