QRYTEXT: John Torrans, merchant, of NYC by 1755 and of Charleston SC after 1758, had 7 grandchildren named Torrans.(Daughters' children named Payne, Cochran, and Moodie). One of them was my Great Grandfather. There were four other sons and two daughters, probably also born in SC. The boys were John, William Hunter (my ancestor), Hugh, Thomas, and James. The girls were Sarah and Caroline. They were all under 21 when their grandmother died so they were all born between 1796 and 1817, birth order unknown. Do any of these fit your Torrans ancestors? I and my cousins have found nothing about any of these. Their parents and grandparents all spelled it Torrans. There might have been some changes in spelling by them or their children at a later date, but my G Grandfather taught his children that he was the grandson of John Torrans of Charleston and when one of his daughter's grandsons wrote about the family in the 1900s he used the Torrans spelling. I would expect these children to be using that spelling. Any information about this family will be greatly appreciated.

Following, is what was found at the local library. 1860 Columbia County, AR, Alabama Twp. 17 Aug 1860, EB Rockett Ass't Marshall, Post Office Falcon. Page 3 Line 3: James Singleton 27 yrs, male, farmer Value Personal Estate $200., TN Mary 22 yrs, female, TN Joan (I personally feel this is the older James which is listed on the 1870 Hopkins County, TX census with Benjamin Dawson and Mary White- Singleton-Dawson. I've run across birth states, names and sexes being recorded incorrectly in census records). 5 yrs, male, TN Elizabeth 4 yrs, female, TN Eliza 6/12, female, AR 1852 James and Mary were married at Hempstead Co. AR. His age 20 yrs. The 1860 Columbia Co. AR census lists his age as 27, and birth state as TN. These dates and ages match. 1852 Mary was listed as age 15 yrs on Hempstead Co. marriage record, making birth year 1835. On 1860 Columbia Co. AR census her age is listed as 22 yrs., making birth year 1838. Ages are consistently recorded incorrectly on the census. Her birth state is TN. Joan (as mentioned, I believe this is James, and incorrectly recorded on the census). I will refer to him as James (Joan). James (Joan) on 1860 Columbia Co. AR census gives age as 5 yrs., birth state of TN. Birth year would be 1855. 1870 Hopkins Co. TX census, Benjamin Dawson and Mary household, lists James, age 15, birth state of TN. Birth year would be 1855. Birth state was listed as AR. Elizabeth Singleton. 1860 Columbia Co. AR census lists her as 4 yrs old, giving birth year as 1856, and birth state of TN. In the 1870 Hopkins Co. TX census in Benjamin Dawson household, the age matches with the 1860 Columbia Co. AR census. The birth state is listed as AR. Eliza Singleton (the Eliza who married GMC Massey, brother of Ida Abiah Massey who married James Monroe Singleton, brother to Eliza, subject of this entry. 1860 Columbia Co. AR census lists her as 6 months old, and birth state as AR. The 1870 Hopkins Co. TX census lists her age as 10 yrs, birth state as AR. The 1880 Hopkins Co. TX census lists her age and birth state as 20 yrs and AR. My James Monroe Singleton was not born until 1862. The 1870 Hopkins Co. AR census lists him as 8 yrs old, and born in AR. According to the 1880 Hopkins Co. TX census, was 17 yrs old, making his birth year 1863, but about right. I am trying to locate the parents of James Singleton who married Mary J. QRYTEXT: Bowling Green BLAKE (aka Bowlin, Benjamin) married Screna NELSON in 1850 in Itawamba Co., Mississippi. On 3 May they were awarded a land grant in Columbia County, Arkansas, and subsequent land grants in 1859 & 1860. On 21 June 1862, B. G. Blake enlisted in Company K, 6th Arkansas Calvary in Magnolia. Records state that he died 31 December 1862 but the place of his demise is unknown. His wife, Screna, and children, Samuel R., Martha E. and possibly others, removed to Hempstead County after Bowling's death. Screna is buried in Hempstead County, but we cannot find where Bowling was laid to rest. His company was in and around Ft.Smith, Arkansas at the time of his death. Was the body sent back to Columbia County where probable family members, Abram, Randolph and Samuel P. also owned land? Any ideas will be great. Thanks.

Both are buried in City Cemetery, Magnolia. Those graves we have found. But we are seeing lots of Mullins in other cemeteries. We want to check out those. Although he was born in South Carolina, he lived most of his life in Columbia County, Arkansas in Buena Vista township, Taylor, and Moss. He married Susan Carolyn Hardy in September 1861 in Columbia County. He mustered into the Arkansas 15th Infantry at Forest Grove, AR in December of 1861. He is buried at Mars Hill Cemetery outside of Lewisville, AR in Lafayette County. Some of his sibblings were, John Arrington, Mary Ann, Martha, Laura, and Axie that I can remember off the top of my head.

He lived in Columbia County, Arkansas most of his life in and around Taylor, Arkansas. He married four times to Amanda Franklin, Lillie Russell, Julia Pearce, and Nancy Clements Shourd. He died in Columbia County in January 1908, I don't know where he is buried, but suspect Harmony Methodist Cemetery. He served in the 33rd Arkansas Infantry during the Civil war. Some of his children were: Robert O. Jr., Jane Elizabeth, Charles, Margaret, Henry, Travis, Hastin, Frank, Harve, Wesley. He had 17 children total, 10 of which were still surviving after his death in 1908.
