Joe W. Harlow Sr.

Joe W Harlow, Sr. age 88, passed away peacefully April 22, 2006, in Austin, Tex., where he resided for the past five years. He was a long-time resident of Jones Mill and Hot Springs, and was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Hot Springs, Born on July 25, 1917 in Cleo, Ark., to John Lee and Annie Niven Harlow, he was predeceased by his son Stroud Franklin Harlow, wives Emma Jean Elam and Vida Fish Harlow and brother Stroud Harlow. He is survived by Bonnie Schmidt Harlow of Hot Springs and son Joseph W. Harlow, Jr. of Austin, Tex., grandchildren Deborah Denise Harlow, Gina Harlow Mote and husband Kevin, and great grandsons Reed and Rhett, step-grandson James Wallace III all of Dallas, and nephew Jim Harlow and wife Nancy of Hot Springs Village.

Joe spent his childhood in Fordyce, Ark graduated from Fordyce High School in 1935, and attended Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia. From 1943 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Army as a mess sergeant of the Officers Mess, Island Command, at Guadalcanal.

Joe spent most of his professional career in the grocery and food services business. He retired in 1983 as Director of Food Services for the Danville, Illinois, Public School System where he was responsible for an award-winning, innovative food programs throughout the district.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 27 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM, at the Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce, Ark., with graveside services at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 28 at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fordyce. The family requests that donations in Joe Harlow's name be made to the Alzheimer Association, Capital of Texas Chapter, 3429 Executive Center Drive, Suite 100, Austin, Texas 78731, Phone 512-241-0420 or the First Methodist Church in Hot Springs, 1100 Central Ave, Hot Springs, AR 71901
