GRENADES CHAPEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

My original intent was to write a history of the Grenades Chapel United Methodist Church until I visited with the late Roy Green in 1991. After reviewing the material Mr. Green had written and accumulated over the years, I realized that I could not improve on his work. Therefore, I have copied Mr. Green's material, instead.

I finally obtained a copy of the actual church records through the efforts of Lillian Halmes Blackard and Jackie Forbus Rayburn. The records were kept meticulously through the years. The practice was to enter each persons name at the time the person joined. Frequently, notes were added when the person died, moved or was simply dropped from the membership rolls due to lack of attendance or on rare occasions for some misconduct. What ever notes were entered have been copied. Frequently, I have added footnotes explaining some feature of the records. Often, a single woman joined under her maiden name. Sometimes a note was added when she married; however in many cases no note was made. Periodically, the records were copied to provide a roll listing only the active members. In many cases, the woman was then listed by her married name which can be confusing for those not familiar with the community. Rather than attempt to combine the records into a single register, they have been reproduced as kept. The point where the records were copied over was noted in each case. Where possible, the exact date the new register was started is indicated. In other cases, only the approximate date can be determined.

Grenades Chapel Methodist Church was one of several Methodist Churches established in Franklin County. The Old Wire Road (now State Highway 352) was built in the 1830's as a military road for transportation between Little Rock and the new post at Fort Smith. It received its name from the telegraph wires which once ran alongside the road. It was also sometimes referred to at The Old Military Road. Since people either walked, rode horseback, or more commonly drove a wagon to church, it was necessary that churches be close together. Therefore, Methodist Churches were established a few miles apart along the Old Wire Road at Pleasant Grove, Gar Creek, Grenades Chapel and Bethlehem.

METHODISM IN FRANKLIN COUNTY, ARKANSAS1

Ozark, M. E. Church was organized in 1871 by Rev. H. Puckett with 48 members. The building, at a cost of $3500, was dedicated in 1882. Concentrating members H. Puckett, B. H. Greathouse, J. Loving, H. M. Grenade D. J. Weissero and F. S. H. Johns. The Church had an organization before Civil War both met in pastors house and later court house. Altus, Ozark, Mulberry and Alma in Clarksville District. Rev. I. P. Burrow Pres. Elder.

Rev. Grenade later became a Presiding Elder living at Ft. Smith. While there, he was appointed as pastor to comfort the criminals to be executed by Judge Parker's Court.

From there he was assigned to 1st Church, Fayetteville.

THE FOLLOWING HISTORY OF GRENADES CHAPEL METHODIST CHURCH WAS WRITTEN BY ROY GREEN, PROBABLY ABOUT 19402

Grenades Chapel was originally a log building with split log benches and Puncheon floors, located about one half mile northwest of the present location. It was named for H. M. Grenade, who was once pastor and later presiding elder in this district.

In the year 1880 Rev. I. L. Burrow established a Methodist organization at Enterprise. Mrs. Martha Green, the oldest present member was a charter member of the Enterprise Church. Grenades is using this register which is over 100 years old.

In the year 1894 James Pipkins and wife deeded to M. E. Church Trustees J. D. Barnes, A. D. Barnes and L. S. Philpott, the acre of land on which the present building stands, and it appears that the Enterprise and Grenades Chapel organization united and erected a frame structure on this plot, which was used for worship services until it burned April 6, 1931.

Efforts were begun in 1933 to raise money for the present building. The fund continued to grow, by small donations and young peoples efforts. A deposit of $125 was granted by the Conference Board of Church Extension. Actual construction was begun in the early part of January, 1936 and was completed in March 1936 at an approximate cost of $1000.00.

On Sunday morning, April 26, 1936 dedication services were conducted at Grenades Chapel by Rev. H. H. Griffin, presiding elder in the Ft. Smith district. The theme of his sermon "A Purposeful Heart, so built we the wall and the wall was joined together for the people had mind to (Nehimiah 4-6)" was especially fitting and timely.

Following the dedication services in the morning was "dinner-on-the-ground" in good old fashioned, hospitable style. Quarterly Conference convened in the afternoon.

The community is justly proud of the building, modest in appearance, comfortable, and ample for its needs. Practically everyone has had a part in the construction. Church members and non-church members as well have worked together in a splendid spirit of cooperation. A member said "I had never seen such a spirit of good will and friendless in the neighborhood working together on the Church helped to bring it about."

According to Anderson Centennial History, Methodism was first established in Franklin County about 1860. The centers occupied were Ozark, Altus, Gar Creek, Grenades Chapel and later Pleasant Grove.

Citizens of the Grenades Chapel community are being congratulated upon the new Methodist Church building, dedicated April 26 by Presiding Elder H. H. Griffin and built by the combined effort of the entire community, regardless of Church membership.
Roy Green superintendent of the Sunday school contributes the following historical sketch:
According to J. A. Floyd, Methodism was first established in Franklin County about 1860.
The centers occupied were Ozark, Altus, Gar Creek, Grenade's Chapel and later Pleasant Grove.
Grenades Chapel was originally a log building with split log benches and puncheon floor, located about one-half mile northwest of the present location. It was named for H. M. Grenade who was once pastor and later presiding elder of this district.
In the year 1880, Rev. I. L. Burrow established a Methodist organization at Enterprise. Mrs. Martha Green, oldest member of the present Church was a charter member of the Enterprise Church.
In the year 1894, Mr. and Mrs. James Pipkins deeded to Methodist trustees J. D. Barnes, A. D. Barnes and L. S. Philpott, the acre of land on which the present building stands. Grenades Chapel groups united to erect a frame building on this plot which was used until it burned, April 6, 1931.
OZARK HIGHWAY 352

The article attached is a clipping from the fifty years ago column in the Spectator of this last April.
From 1931 to 1936, church services were held in the local public school building.
Since school consolidation, the Church is the only public building in this valley about 9 miles from Ozark.
The early Methodist pioneers certainly laid a solid foundation for a distance of about 15 miles as there has never been any other denomination organized in well over 100 years.
This was originally the Ozark circuit, a four point charge with a parsonage at Gar Creek but later moved to Ozark.
It is on the old stage road and for about 100 years, the Old Wire Road, now 352, due West from Clarksville to Mulberry by passing all the towns on Hwy. 64. All four Churches were on this road. Only Grenades Chapel and Gar Creek
remain. During the Civil War, this was a Military road and a telegraph wire was erected
from Little Rock West so the name Wire Road remains to this day for most residents.
This explains why this area was settled and Churches established as early as the landings along the river from Spadra to Ozark.
Grenades Chapel and Gar Creek have a rich heritage that needs to be preserved not for the past but for the present and future generations information and inspiration.

A REPORT TO CONFERENCE
APR 19363

GRENADES 'S CHAPEL CHURCH

The Grenades Chapel Methodist Church is situated in the Philpott Coal-field valley nine miles north east of Ozark on the "Old Wire Road".

General farming, majoring in cattle raising and dairying is the principal industry. With the addition of income from several small mines this community enjoys more than average prosperity for farm communities in this county.

The organization of the Grenades Chapel Church was first attempted by H. M. Grenade, April 26, 1860. The first Church building was erected of logs, and the floors and seats were of split logs. The people furnished material ;and labor for the building and Mr. Grenade became their first pastor. There was only one other Church in the Valley at that time and it was located two and one-half miles West of Grenades Church and was known as Salem. Salem had fourteen or fifteen charter members and for years was a stronger Church than Grenades Chapel.

As the community grew, Grenades Chapel needed a larger building to accommodate the people. The Church, the school and the Masons built a two-story frame structure on the "Wire Road" about one-fourth mile from the little log Church. The Masons used the top floor and the Church and School; used the main floor. However, this arrangement was not entirely satisfactory and a few years later the people of the community built another building for a Church. The new location was three-fourths miles east of the former one and a much better site for a Church. In 1931 this building burned and for five years services were held in the school house.

In 1936, a new and modern building was completed. The main part of this building, not including the elevation for the choir, is approximately 48 X 36. On each side of the choir loft there is a small Sunday School room. These small rooms are also used for dressing rooms when plays are given.
The Church is equipped with a good piano, song books, blackboards and charts for Sunday School work with the small children. There are also small chairs in the Sunday School rooms. The house is heated by a large coal stove and an oil stove in each of the small rooms.
The entire building is well lighted with plenty of large windows. There are double doors in the front and a door at one side of the building. The seats in the Church room are very comfortable home made pine benches. The benches are painted the same color as the woodwork, the walls are painted a soft gray and the floor is stained. The building is electrically lighted inside and out.

The outside of the building is painted white and is near the back of a two-acre grove of large oak trees. The ground is high and well drained and because of this good location, the Church is one of the prominent buildings of the community.

Rev. C. J. Wade is the pastor. He lives at Altus and is also pastor for three other Churches. He preaches at Grenades once a month on Saturday night and Sunday morning. During the summer a revival meeting of ten days or two weeks is held. If the interest is good, the evening services will be attended by a hundred or even two hundred fifty persons.

The Sunday School is conducted all year with an average of fifty-five attendance during the bad weather and seventy-five during the summer. The Sunday School workers are constantly striving to get all the families of the community interested in the Sunday School. Some will attend a few Sundays and then quit. It is believed that the majority of cases no form of conveyance accounts for the seeming lack of interest.

All the people of this community are of the working class and cotton dresses and overalls are very prominent at any gathering. Approximately 60% of the inhabitants are farm owners and the other 40% are crop renters and coal miners who pay cash rent for a house and a small plot of ground. Most of the renters stay on the same places from year to year but less than 10% of the active members of the Sunday School and Church are renters.

The financing of the Church is carried on through the Sunday School. Rev. Wade receives $10.00 per month for his services as pastor at this place. He is the only paid worker.

The Sunday School teachers, because of their interest in the work have at their own expense trained themselves by correspondence and extension coursed. They also subscribe to helpful magazines and use instructive books.

The building is used for a number of worthwhile community activities such as: Community singings, home talent plays, educational pictures and slides, and farm meetings.

The Church has an inactive roll of about seventy-five. One of these inactive members is a very charming old lady that joined the Church when the "Little Log Church" was practically new. She and several other old folks still live near and are interested in the welfare of the Church because of feebleness and age no longer take an active part. Others of the inactive list are scattered over the USA.

There are twenty active members and tireless workers doing all they can to lead the people of Grenades Chapel Community into happier Christian Living.

SAT. MAY 19, 1990
BY ROY GREEN

Read to the congregation Sat. May 19, 1990 at the dedication of Grenades Church built in 1936 with a $10,000 improvements just completed.

Our Dist. Supt. R. W. Cheyne stated that he could find no record in the Dist. office of events mentioned in the history of Grenades Chapel early Church.
We began a search in the conference records of those available. We found that evangelists were working out from Clarksville (Goodspeed History) and that Ozark was in the Clarksville District with Isham Burrow Presiding Elder. H. M Grenade's first assignment was in 1852 when the Ark. Conference met at Clarksville. In 1854, the General Conference divided the Ark. Conference forming the Southern Territory and the Ouachita Conference. Ozark; and Clarksville remained in the Ark. Conference. It states that the preachers were assigned as constituent members. A picture of Ozark's First Methodist Church appeared in The Spectator recently which was built-in 1871 at a cost of $3500.
B. W. Greenhouse, J. Loving, H. M Grenade H. Puckett, D. J. Weemes and F. S. T. Johnson were constituted members of the Clarksville District. Rev. Greathouse was pastor of Ozark Church in 1877 before being appointed Presiding Elder. Later, he was pastor of First Church in Fayetteville.
We remember that Bethlehem in Johnson County was on the old Ozark Circuit for many years. Their Church deed shows 1858 but conditions hindered building until after the Civil War.

REGISTER OF MARRIAGES

Name of Parties Date and by Whom Solemnized

Lillie D. Bennettt and Dr. C. R. KingAug 30, 1891
Zora Jones and Jessie Gaines Oct 1891

Ruby Jacqueline Kirby and Robert HughMar 21, 1929 by T. L. Dickerson
Robbie Avo Lee and Alva C. Floyd Nov 17, 1935 By Rev. A. C. Smith

1 This was written by Roy Green. The date is not certain.
2 A note was written on the side of the page: " The original register before 1894 for Enterprise has never been located. Names Enterprise erased Two Pages, Enterprise names first, then additions follows.
3 This report was written and delivered by Roy Green.
4 This is the minutes of the Sunday School which are included in the Church Record book.
5 No date is given for these minutes; however, from the persons mentioned, the date must have been in the early 1940's.
6 An "M" is entered beside some names. This probably indicates the regular members. The copy I have blocks some of the view and it cannot be determined if No. 1 through 8 and No. 25 through 30 were so marked. Mrs. Alton Stokes was not numbered. If an "M" were entered by her name it would not be visible.
7 An "M" is entered beside some names. This probably indicates the regular members. Columns were made for Age, Yr., Mo. and Day but no information was entered.
8 He was Issom L. Burrow, a well known pastor in the area.
9 The Gar Creek Church Register lists him as "Y. A. Gilman".
10 The Enterprise and Grenades Chapel Methodist Churches were combined in 1893 and moved into a new building in 1894. The Gar Creek Register lists an M. B. Buron as pastor in 1901.
11 The Gar Creek Church register names W. A. Stroud instead of Henry Stroud.
12 The Gar Creek Church register gives the Rev. Young's name as J. C. Young.
13 The Rev. Emerson's first name is not given.
14 The Gar Creek Church register lists a J. W. Howard as pastor for November 1909-1911. This is probably the same person.
