...M. 1-16-1854 AR franklin co.

dicey  , was the daughter  of  joseph dunn (1800)TN + catherine stinnett

According to Cleda V.Turner/Stephens ...
James Turner's great-granddaughter, shortly
after the start of the Civil War James was afraid for the safety of
Dicy and their children left unprotected from the union army.  He took them
to the fort at Fort Smith and was able to talk the military into keeping
Dicy, Joseph, Richard, Robert and Mary there.
Cleda says that
Dicy died while they were at the fort.   James, who enlisted for the
confederates, was captured during that time but that
"the Federals
released him the next day."

On 12 Jan 1854 when James was 21, he first married Dicy Dunn, in Franklin Co. AR.
Born in 1839 in TN. Dicy died in Fort Smith,AR  Sebastian Co.

Richard, Robert and Joseph were James Turners three sons who were left
and got lost on the Kansas prairie after being separated from
the wagon train by the Kansas Jayhawkers.  James found them later
after searching for 45 days.

They continued on their way to Ft. Leavenworth all of them on the one horse.
When he got there they made a log house about two miles outside town.
They bought two cows.

They lived there about two years while James worked as a blacksmith
raising the children himself.

They returned to AR  to his farm near Fort Smith  where he remarried.

Mrs. Cleda V. Turner/Stephens said that after Dicy died and towards the end
of the civil  war ":James took his three boys and a team of oxen &
wagon -horse & mule & buggy and started with the wagon train to Ft. Leavenworth,KS.
" " They carried deeds to farms & valuable papers."  "The Kansas Jayhawkers
set fire to the prairie in front of the wagon train.  James took the horse
and left the three boys to keep from being captured by the soliders.
The Rebels traveling with the wagon train took away   the boys wagon and
team, an open buggy. The boys followed the wagons for three days  on foot
without any food.  They walked until a farmer took in and kept.
them.
James Turner hid out and when he felt the soliders were gone he rode
for 45 days looking for his boys.  He stopped by every farm. He finally
found all dirty but had been fed.
