I am searching for my great grandfather, Alexander Parmer. He often went by the name of Alex or Aleck (also spelled Elic).  He was born in 1856 and I don't know if it was in Missouri or Illinois.  He ran away from home as a young boy and was on his own for a long time.  I believe he was in Franklin Co. when the 1880 Census was taken.  I think he was a farm laborer and lived at the home of Doctor C. Bass. He married my great grandmother, Lillie Belle Pennington in 1894 at Fulton Co. I have no real info on him before finding them in a 1900 Census in Independence Co.  They raised their family which included my grandmother in Independence Co. and they lived the rest of their lives there in Locust Grove.  I am trying to trace him back to his family of origin as I do not know who his parents were or if he had siblings. I believe he was married once before Lillie Belle.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.   Thank you,   Linda Flattinger laflatt@cybertime.net

SURNAMES: HAIL/KUYKENDALL

I am a descendant of William Hail, one of the founders of Ozark. His son and daughter-in-law, Jacob and  Elvira Kuykendall Hail died of food poisoning in 1844 after a church social. They left four children. One son, my G.G.Grandfather Elias left for Texas about the age of 14, to become a cowboy and never to return to Ozark. The Hail family were many in Ozark during 1830's, 40's, 50's and 60's. I am looking for any descendants that may still live in the Franklin County area.

I'm searching for information on my great-great aunt/uncle who lived in Charleston, AR in the early 1900's. I don't know how long they were there but I think they had moved to TX by 1920. Their names were John & Dora Willems. The only thing I know about them is that they seemed to adopt several children over the years. I also was told once that there is a Willems Street in Charleston that was named after them. Is this true? They moved to US from Germany sometime in late 1800's, possibly stopping in Streator IL on their way to AR.   Bill Korstick bkorstick@yahoo.com January 5, 2004

Are you a descendant of Daniel HOLE/HOEL b 1757 m Phebe BEDELL/BEEDLE??? If so, I believe we are searching the same line. Daniel's father was Chas. Daniel HOLE/HOEL b c 1721 m Phebe CLARK. Chas. Dan.'s father was Chas. HOLE b c 1700 d 1749 Elizabeth Town, NY m Sarah SMITH. Chas. was in Suffolk Co., NY in 1727 and in NJ by 1732.

Does anyone have any further on Chas. b c 1700??

My ancestor Henry Brehe homesteaded in Franklin Co, AR in 1880.  He was there until 1886 for sure.  The final Patent was 1895 and I think he moved away by 1900.  The land was between Peter Pender and Sub Rosa.  The town of Branch was evidently larger but a bit farther south.  He had a wife Wilhelmina and 5 children.

I have the following questions in my mind:

Is there a public library in Franklin Co, AR?

Is there a genealogical society in Franklin Co, AR?

In 1886 he declared he had voted in Wittich Twp but more recently voted in Hurricane Twp.  Who has the voting registers?  What years were voting years?

In 1886 he declared he was a US citizen.  Do the voting registers state when and where he was naturalized?  He was born in Germany in 1843, immigrated about 1845 or 1847, lived in Franklin Co, MO until 1880, and served in the Civil War from MO 1861-1864.  Perhaps he got citizenship in MO.

The land was called homestead but he actually bought it from John J. Valentine and first settled there in 1880, and the house was already existing.  Why was it called homestead?  Later he and son-in-law built a larger house in the same area.  Are land records in Ozark? The only land records I found on Internet were for this homestead.

Lowes Cemetery is about 2 miles east of the homestead.  I have a picture of the archway entrance taken in 1977.  Henry's daughter Julia (Brehe) Green (1867-1900) and her 2 babies Alvina L. Green (1890-1890) and Zeno Green (1897-1897) are buried there.  I have a picture.  Is it still maintained?  I did not find it mentioned on Internet.  Julia's widower James Barney 'Jim" Green (1868-1952) remarried and later moved away.

I would appreciate guidance.  Thanks very much.  Zelda Dubel, Fresno, California.  rvdubel@msn.com

I have Daniel Conatser as being her father and Anne Garner as her mother but can not find any proof. The only Daniel that seems to fit, I can't find any record of children or a wife named Anne Garner for him.  I do know that Ellen had at least two brothers, Jerry and Columbus, because she was living with them in the 1880 census. If anyone has info on my family and would share it with me, I would greatly appreciate it.

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GV.2ADI/361

In Ozark area, AR, the Oak Bend Cemetery is being dug up and the land readied for a housing project.  In this cemetery, there are graves for S. E. Miller and wife Elizabeth who was a St. Clair.  Also, a 4-yr old son of the Miller couple.

I am posting this information for anyone that might have a connection to this Elizabeth St. Clair or her husband.

I believe this Elizabeth may have been related to my great grandfather G. W. St. Clair and would like to know that the headstone (even if it is broken) is preserved.  If anyone has the means, I would like to see the stone placed in the G. W. St. Clair family cemetery which is near there rather than be destroyed.

I am in Franklin county working my heart out. I did a program this past
week for the high school on Altus history. May is Arkansas Heritage month.
The program was in honor of that. The Altus Historical Society is going to
put on a program called Ancestor Minute in Fain Higdon Cemetery on Locust
Street in Altus on May 25. We will dress in period clothing and tell the
history of the person buried there. I am the current president of the Altus
Historical Society. We also have a wonderful museum in Altus which is open
Tue., Wed., Fri., and Sat. from 10-2. We publish a quarterly newsletter.
I have been to the courthouse for some of the people.

The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, Central Arkansas Library System is
preparing to undertake The Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture.
This will be an online Encyclopedia. Then a printed book. Tom W. Dillard is
editor in chief... see

The NAGS serves the Arkansas Counties of Washington, Carroll, Madison and Benton, but their publication, The Backtracker, includes information from many Arkansas Counties to the NW.
Be sure and visit often as we are going to be adding data as time permits. And special thanks to all of the officers and members that made it possible!

Cheryl,

Melissa Holt Green was the daughter of the William Ambrose Holt I wrote about yesterday. Her brother, Isaac Daniel Holt, was my great-grandfather.

Mary Stutzman Holt was her mother, and George Stutsman and Ellender Brashear were her grandparents, as were Willis and Sarah Holt. If you would like more info, I have quite a bit. I would be very interested in Lissie's descendants, My grandfather, her nephew, gets confused, but he was very fond of his aunt Lissie. He said she lived to be 100 years old.

BTW, do you still live near Alix? I go there a couple times a year as I have so much family there, including my grandmother. If you are in the area, I would love to meet you. i love meeting new cousins!

I have many relatives who lived around Vesta and Charleston. Many of them are buried at Mount Hope Church Cemetery. Their last names are RAINWATER and ESSMAN.
