QUERY: Seeking additional information on the descendants of John Coffee Nixon, son of Francis Marion Nixon.  John Coffee Nixon married Mary Frances SIMPSON, and had 8 children, one of which was George Washington Nixon (Birth: 12 JUL 1840 in Franklin Co. AR), who had a son named E. C. (or E. T.) Nixon.

There is a note that E. C. Nixon married a "Golden", but nothing is known of this marriage, nor of any descendants.

In the 1900 Census of Prairie Grove Township, the family of George Washington Nixon lists his wife, wife's mother, and children still at home.  James S was 24 and a painter, Edward T. Nixon was 13 and at school.  Here there seems to be a discrepancy  as to whether the name of George's son was Edward T or Edward C Nixon.

We are trying to discover as much information as possible regarding this son of George W Nixon.

Thank you for any information.

CAMPBELL:

This is for anyone who is related to Smithy Campbell and her children in the 1850 census of Franklin County, AR.  It has long been a misconception that Smithy Smith Campbell was married to a William Campbell.  She was not.  She was married to James Campbell, the son of Richard Campbell and Susanna.  James and Smithy were in Perry County, TN in 1820.  Apparently between the 1820 & and 1830 census James died...possibly before 1825 when Smithy was named in her father John Smith's will.  Son-in-laws were named for the married daughters, but Smithy Campbell and Penny Campbell were named themselves.   I am just trying to set the record straight for those who have been under the misconception that Smithy was married to Richard Campbell's brother William.  William Campbell was still in TN in the 1850 census with his wife Jane and two of their adult children.

I would also like to add that Richard H. Campbell in Franklin in 1860 was more than likely the son of William Campbell not his brother Richard.  William Campbell born 1799 was the son of Richard and Rachel Smith Campbell and he was in Franklin County, AR in 1850 as well.    Smithy Smith Campbell was his Aunt thru his mother Rachel and she was his sister-in-law thru his half brother James Campbell.   They may have actually traveled to AR together after 1840.  Smithy was apparently still in Perry County in 1830 in the household of her son Cyrus.  I have not been able to locate her in 1840.

Back to Richard H. born abt 1822...in the 1830 census a boy his age was in William's household and in 1840 Richard H. is out into the census and William is missing 2 older boys.  William's brother Richard has all 4 of his boys from 1830 still in his household in 1840 leaving little question that Richard H. was most probably the son of William and Polly Akin (whom he married in 1818 in Williamson County as Duncan Campbell).
Richard Campbell moved on to Missouri in 1860...Richard H. moved on to Franklin County, AR by 1860 where his parents and other siblings had relocated.  Next door to him is Mary Campbell (although I think the age was off) from SC...his mother...Mary "Polly" Nancy Akin Campbell.

I know people want to get their lineage right and hopefully this will help members from these two family's descendants.  There is documentation on Smithy Smith Campbell  as the wife of James and the census records seem to bear out Richard H. Campbell's parentage.   My lineage is Elizabeth Campbell Hilburn, the sister to William and Richard Campbell and the niece and sister-in-law  of Smithy Smith Campbell and the Aunt of Richard H. Campbell.   These people are all of my lineage in one way or another and I know I want them lined up correctly.

My ggrandmother was Minnie Belle WALKER STATON and she was born in Franklin County, in or near Vesta, AR on 15 Oct 1879 and died 16 May of 1938 in Vesta. Married T.F. (Thomas) Staton 23 Dec 1897. They are both buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

I wonder if we are related?  Charles G. Staton born 1878 and died in Franklin County.  His father came from Georgia.  He had six children: Berkley (Shorty), Harvey, Raymond, Montie, Lois and ??.  Found them on the 1920 Census in Basham, Franklin, Arkansas.

Do you know anything about this family?

James G. Pierce b ca 1819 TN md Mary Wisdom b ca 1823 TN.  They
married 1841 in Washington Co. MO and their first children were born
in MO.  They then moved to AR and appeared on the 1850 census of
White Oak, Franklin Co. and they both died in Franklin Co.

I'm curious about Mary (Wisdom) Pierce's parents.  I've been told

that.  I've noticed there were many Wisdoms living in Franklin Co.
and I wonder if or how they might be related.  Anyone researching them??

Don, I am posting this to several list so if you are on more then one, you might
get it again.

I am looking for researchers that are researching Henry Holloway Hatfield,
who married (1) Lucinda Thurman and then (2) Nancy Brown. He was son of Andrew
'Andy' Warren Hatfield and Priscilla 'Pricy' Turner. Lucinda Thurman was
daughter of Ephraim Thurman and Rosannah 'Rosie' Rogers. Franklin County, AR

I have a few questions and problems with his family. I hope someone has the
info I am needing.

Lucinda Thurman

b. June 27, 1818, Bledsoe Co, TN
d. Bet. 1848 - 1850, Marion Co, Tn

She married Henry Holloway Hatfield, Bet. 1839 - 1840, Marion Co, TN. She  is
22 yrs of age and he, 17, when they married. In the 1840 census,  only the
two of them are listed. But we know that Hiram H. (Holloway)  Hatfield was born
Dec 1840. This would mean she was with child when the  1840 census was taken.
This makes more sense that he was her first child  and they married late 1839
or before  March 1840.

She is listed in the 1830 census with her parents.

is NOT listed on the 1850 census.
Does someone have a better death date for  her and where she is buried?

Henry Holloway Hatfield married again shortly after Lucinda's death to  Nancy
Brown (b. 1832, TN), abt 1850, Marion Co, TN.
Does anyone know a better marriage date for  them? Also who was Nancy Brown's
parents?

She and Henry are listed with the first 4 children's of Lucinda's  and Henry
and Nancy's first child, Obedience Caroline Hatfield.

After this census, between 1855-1857, they moved on to Walker Co, GA, and
continued to have more children. As we know, like other family members,  Walker
Co, GA was the place to go. I wonder if it was for the Land Lottery.  Notice
the last two were born in GA and the rest in TN. And of course,  Lucinda's
children are still with them.

This family is on the move. After 1868, they moved to AL. I  believe some of
the info on this census is incorrect but I do believe that it is  them. Notice
the age and place of birth for some of the children. Not quite  correct. Also
all of Lucinda's children are on their own and not listed with  them.
Henry's daughter, Catherine Hatfield is not listed on this census.
Did she marry or did she  die?
She would have been abt 15-17 yrs of age and could have married. The  last
two names listed are hard to read. They should be John S.  and Murkey C.
Hatfield.

Now here is where is gets real good. Henry Holloway Hatfield died 4 yrs
after the 1870 census, May 18, 1874. I am not sure if he was living in  the above
location or already had moved to ARK. Nancy is listed in the 1880  census in
ARK with 3 of her children. The last child was added in ARK  and is 7 yrs of
age, born abt 1873, poss before Henry died. It states she was  born in ARK so
they must have been living in ARK in 1873 and was there when  Henry died.
Does someone know if he died in ARK? If so,  where is he buried?
I do not know who their daughters married so I cannot follow them any
further. John S. Hatfield, who I think may have the middle name  'SUMMERFIELD' , is
listed on this census but I cannot find him after this.  And of course there
is not an 1890 census to help us follow them. I cannot find  Nancy after this
either.
I am hoping I can find someone to help me with the rest of this line.
I also hope to find the answer to several of my questions on this  family.
Can anyone share who the daughters married and  where they went?

Charles G Staton born Jan 28, 1878 died June 30, 1938 was married to Addie Henton Staton born June 30, 1918 they had seven children Berkley, Harvey, Raymond, Montie, Harold, Lois and Clyde.  My aunt Lois remembers an Aunt Minnie and an Uncle Frank, who she believes were her fathers brother and sister.  My mother was Montie.

I believe Thomas Flemon Staton from Hall County, Georgia married Minnie Bell and had 4 children Alice, Florence, Golden and Charles.

Is this Charles listed above as Thomas Staton's son, my Grandfather?  If so, do you have any records or proof to support your views?

Hi Don and Gabbie,
I hope I'm not leading you on the wrong path here.  After more research today I may have the last name wrong. On her death certificate the maiden name for her Mom was very hard to read and I wasn't sure if it said BEARD, BEENE, BEAN or BEAR.  First name Rosa.  Father was Charles WALKER.  That is as much proof in documents that I have.  From what I have gathered through census documents and guessing is the father and mother of Charles is James and Sarah from AL and TN.
Now I am thinking it was BEENE and not BEARD.  I can go further into what I have but it may not be what your needing.  If anything sounds good to you let me know and I will give you all I have but I have a feeling I am leading you astray.  As we are both looking at the same County and time frame I will let you know if I see anything with the BEARD surname.  Have you tried the newspaper from Ozark?  I think it is called the Spectator.  They are online.

Will post this weekend Alvin. Thank you

From: "Alvin K. Swonger" AKS@URI.EDU

I am trying to resolve an entry from the 1900 census from Grover, Franklin,
AR.  It lists a John Emmery, born April 1876 in AR, as head of
household.  There are three other people in this household: Elizabeth
Swanger, born Nov 1857, listed as John's mother; Harvey Swanger, born May
1883, listed as John's brother; and Jocie Swanger, born Sep 1884, listed as
John's sister.  It would seem that Elizabeth was married to a Mr. Emmery
and had John in 1876, then married a Mr. Swanger and had Harvey and Jocie
in 1883/4.  Elizabeth had other children as well, but only these three were
surviving in 1900 it would seem.

Census records are notorious for misspelling of names.  It is likely that
"Emmery" was actually "Emery", since the former is almost nonexistent in
Arkansas records while the latter is commonplace.  I strongly suspect that
"Swanger" is also a mislisting in this instance.  I can find no Swangers or
Swongers that fit with this group.  I suspect that Harvey Swanger is the
same as the Harvey Swearington in the 1910 Arkansas census.  The names
Swearington, Swearingin, and Swearinger were prominent in both Cass and
Franklin Counties in that era.  There is an example from Benton Co, AR in
the same census year where a Swearinger is listed as a "Swanger" even
though he is residing next door to his "Swearinger" father.

Does anyone have any ideas for better determining the identity of this
small family group?  For example, would a birth record exist for Harvey or
Jocie in Franklin County to indicate their true surname or a death record
for either Mr. "Emmery" or Mr. Swanger/Swearington?  Can such records be
accessed in Franklin Co, AR for genealogical research or are they
restricted to members of the immediate family?

Will post today, and thank you.
Don

Eventually, they took in some Anderson children, nieces and nephews of my ancestor, whose names were, Nancy  Jane, Clay and Mary Alice.  They were the children of James Anderson and Sarah Hughes.  In the 1860 Census for Boston, Franklin Co. Arkansas, they following entry lists the family:
house or dwelling # 547 L.(S?) J. Durning  M age 70  farmer   $1600  $4100  b. NC
                    Nancy Durning  F age 60 (b. ca 1799)  b. KY
Children:       John  age 10 b. Ark
Nannie age 3 ( or 7 hard to read)
     M. Anderson  F age 21
     Clay Anderson  M age 19
      N.J. Anderson F age 16
      A. Blair M age 22 Farmer  b. KY
Does any of this connect with your DURNING line?

Seeking info on James, John and David Walker who were early land owners in
Franklin Co. David Walker bought land in 1839, James Walker in 1860 and John
Walker in 1858.  I believe these to be tied to James Gilmore Walker in White
Co. because this J.G.Walker also owned land in Franklin Co. Will share info.
