Subject: Stroud/Johnson

My grandmother, Hattie Odessa Stroud was born in Franklin County Arkansas (Cherokee Tract) on 1/17/1892. As far as anyone knows, she was an only child. She met and married my grandfather, George Washing Johnson. The couple was married at Buffalo Gap, Texas in 1909.

Story has it that my grandmother was taken at an early age (1 year old) and placed with a "white" parents, the Callahan's in North Central Texas.
If anyone has an information regarding my grandparents, I would like to hear from you.
Best regards,
Dewaine Edwards

Regards, Elane

I am not sure if anyone can help me or not, but I am looking for an article that was published by Sam H. Branch in 1934 and possibly a condensed reprint in 1940 or on December 30, 1970. I only have a terrible photocopy, but the title is "James Hunter Family History."  James Madison Hunter lived in, according to different sources, Prairie, Branch, Franklin, Arkansas, so I e-mailed the Spectator Newspaper. Unfortunately, the copy does not name the original publisher. I would like to get a copy of the original article if it is possible to do so. If anyone in the area might know where to search this article out, could you please point me in the right direction? I am unfortunately miles away in Nevada, but most of my ancestors came from Arkansas.

First paragraph of the condensed article reads:
"(Editor Note) The following article was written by Sam H. Branch in 1934 regarding his grandfather [James Madison Hunter]. It was necessary to condense the article somewhat because of space."

Thanks for any help!

Franklin County has two County Seats-- Charleston and Ozark. My aunt Willie Wood was County Clerk for years in Charleston. I had cousins that lived in Ozark. As a child growing up in "Peterpendar" (between the two towns), I was told the two seats were necessary due to the Arkansas River dividing the county, and before the Ozark bridge was installed crossing the river was not practical at times. I believe much is now consolidated in Ozark, but believe some records are still maintained in Charleston. The address and phone for Ozark County Clerk is:

Franklin County Clerk
Courthouse
Ozark, AR 72949
Telephone: (479) 667-3607

I suppose you know this a small operation, and anyone you talk to will no doubt try to steer you to the right place. I believe the newspaper in Ozark is The Spectator, and in Charleston it s the Charleston Express.

TURPIN, STRAHAN

Hello:

I'm looking for any information on JAMES STRAHAN, he supposedly married HARRIET TURPIN in Franklin Co, township of Mulberry, I think the marriage was in Oct. of 1869. Any information on JAMES STRAHAN and HARRIET would be most appreciated.

Also, I heard from oral history that HARRIET had be married to AARON TURPIN just prior to JAMES, and he supposedly drown in June of 1869 or 1868, but I believe 1869 could be right. Is there any way of finding out, maybe newspaper accounts? Thank you, STEPHEN STRAHAN, Ramona, CA

MARTIN, WEIR

I am interested in locating information about my Great Grandfather

I believe he was in Franklin County in the 1880's, I had one uncle that was born there I believe, If I am not mistaken my great grandfathers name was John Martin and the last census I saw, in 1870 he was in Tennessee where my grand father was born in 1876.

We are related through Mary M. Bush, Francis Marion's sister>

Sept 24
Hello Marilyn,
I arrived home last night after spending two weeks visiting relatives and friends in Arizona---that is where I lived from the time I was about 13 years old until 1956 when my husband and I moved to sunny California.  I had several e-mails from Steve Bush when I got home which, of course, made me very happy.   I think several years back we did communicate a time or two.   I actually had lost track of Steve after he left CA and moved to WA and then to TX until a few months back.   I am the g granddaughter of Mary M. Bush who married William A. Waller. Their daughter Myrtle Geneva was my grandmother and she married John W. McNiel, they had a son Truman McNiel who married my mother Melcena Foster, and I am their only child.  I have lots of into on the Bushs (lots from Steve), the Wallers, and Fosters.  Margaret Samantha Bush was a Waller before marriage.  She was a sister of my gg grandfather William A. Waller-----William A. and Margaret Samantha married into the Bush family---he married Mary M. and she married John M. Bush. They had one other sister Minerva Tennessee who married a Silas Joshua Wiggins.   All were married in Franklin Co., AR.  So I am a descendant of both Wallers and Bushs.

The e-mail I got from Steve said he wanted us to communicate in hopes that we might find more info on the Bush family.   I love genealogy, and would be happy to hear from you.   I really like the idea of putting our info all together.  If you have any questions, or want me to send you what I have, please let me know.  I am anxious to hear from you.   Steve sent me info you gave him and already I have found some I can use.  I did not know where John and Margaret S. were buried. So thanks.

My e-mail is:    jdpost28@cox.net      My name is Juanita Dolores Balderas, but I go by Dolores (don't know who that Juanita is).
Let me hear from you, Dolores

Hi Marilyn,
Its good to hear from you.  We actually live not too terribly far apart.   We live in Lemon Grove, CA which is about 12 miles inland from San Diego.  Annette and I did communicate quite a few years back.   We are, of course, related through Francis Marion Bush, and though we both have Fosters in our family, we never did find a Foster connection.   My Fosters were from VA before moving to MO and then on to TX.   I love searching for genealogy info.   I retired from teaching school in 1990, and have spent lots and lots of time on the computer since then.   I do have one cousin who lived in Huntington Beach, CA who got me started on genealogy. He is from my Foster family.  He has been a big help to me.   I became acquainted with Steve Bush when he was in San Marcos----about a half hour drive from me.    Than he moved and I did not hear from him for awhile.   He gave me lots of info on the Bushes.   The Bush and Waller families are my dad's side while the Fosters are my mothers family.

I'm happy to share any and all of what I have found.    And I am so glad to hear from you.  I sent Steve my Bush work, and am so glad he wants to put it all together---that will help all of us so we don't duplicate or spend time searching for what someone else might have.

Don't hesitate to ask if you're needing info.   Talk to you again soon,
Dolores

Sept 25
Hi Marilyn,
I have looked over the Foster and Wiggins info that you sent, and I do not recognize any of the names, so I am sending you a list to see if you recognize any of my family.
WIGGINS, Silas Joshua b. 1855 m. Minerva T. Waller b. 1859.  Children:  Ethel 1876, Olly 1878, Mary Jane 1880, George 1883, William W. 1885, John Henry 1887, Barney (Barnie) 1891, Samuel 1894, and Foster 1896.

FOSTER, James b. 1738 m. Jane P. Campbell 1845
               James Coulter b. 1775 in VA m. Sarah (Sallie) McCray b. 1777
               James W. b. 1811 m. Sarah (Sally) Shaw (an orphan girl) b. 1807
               James D. b. 1838 m. Melcena Shaw (no relation to above) b.1851
               Hugo Henry b. 1876 m. Hattie Jane PAyton b. 1880
               Melcena b. 1902 m. Truman W. MCNiel b. 1904
              J. Dolores b. 1928 m Sal Balderas b. 1928
These is my Foster line----all born in VA except from Hugo H. on down.  The family left VA and moved to MO about the late 1840's, then they moved to TX about 1860's.    So Annette and my Fosters do not seem to be of the same family.   The above Wiggins family-----Minerva is a sister to Margaret Samantha Waller.   Their parents were John Henry Waller and mother was Mary E. Shipley Waller.  John Henry was shot and killed in 1863 while at home on furlough (Civil War)---he was shot by renegade Union soldiers.   Mary E. later married her husband's friend, John Jason Pendergrass of Franklin Co., AR. and together they had 6 children, but twins who died as infants.  John J. also had 6 children by first marriage and she died about 1862..  I have little info on the parents, and have not found much by writing to TN for info.

So much for now, will write more later.

Hi Marilyn,

WOW! Thanks for the new info you just sent me.  Yes, there was quite a bit that I needed from your book--I have quite a bit of info on the Pendergrass' and this helped me a lot.  While your book is out, do you find anything on John Henry Waller?   I know he was home on furlough and he was shot by Union soldiers, so I presume he was buried in Franklin Co. ,AR.  I think it was in January of 1863 or 1864, not exactly sure.  He was a friend of Jason J. Pendergrass, and they lived close by.   Both went into the army together, and as I have been told, Jason, too, was home on furlough as his first wife was extremely ill, and was dying.  He apparently saw or heard the soldiers and he hid, and consequently he lived, but John H. Waller did not know soldiers were in the area, and so he answered the door---the soldiers took him into the back yard and as wife, Mary E. watched, they shot him and he died immediately.    I sure would like to know where he is buried.

Again, thanks so much and YES this is fun!!!!!!
Dolores

Sept 28
Hi Marilyn,

Just wanted to say THANKS for all those dates you sent me--especially the Pendergrass, as I had most of the names with birth dates, but not death dates or places of burial.    Actually I used most of what you sent.  And I also used most of the Bush info also.   It helped me a lot.    Again, thanks!!!

I am a descendant of Francis Marion Bush thru his daughter Mary M. Bush and she married my g grandfather William Alexander Waller, then through their daughter Myrtle Geneva who married my grandfather John Wesley McNiel, then thru their son Truman W. McNiel who married my mother Melcena Foster, then I am their only child.      How are you related to the Bush family? I think Steve said you were the granddaughter of Clarence Bush, but I most have mislaid that memo.

Steve sent me an updated version of FTM  -- mine was version 11, and he sent version 16!    Now to get that installed.   I have 3 grandsons who are good at this sort of thing, plus both my sons can do it, so guess I will wait until the week-end and let them do that.    I am not good at installing anything new on the computer.

By the way, I do have quite a bit of information on the Pendergrasses and also the Wallers if you need it---just let me know.
Again thanks, and hope to hear from you soon.
Dolores

Sept 29
Hi Marilyn,
Thanks for the Punpkin info. That is really cute as well as informative.

I though maybe I should tell you a bit more about our family.  My husband is Sal Balderas.   We met in high school, and shortly after graduation he went into the military service.   On his first furlough in December of 1950, we were married (short time together as he was being sent to Germany).  He came home in 1952, and we moved to Flagstaff, AZ for him to attend college.   He graduated in 1956 with a teaching degree, and we moved to sunny California.   Our oldest son was born on March 8, 1955 in Flagstaff.   We moved to Lemon Grove, CA where we have lived ever since.  Our second son was born in La Mesa, CA on Dec. 7, 1957.   So that is the extent of our family-- just 2 boys.   My husband taught school for 32 years here in Lemon Grove, and after the boys were settled in school, I went back to school and got my teaching degree and I taught school for 21 years before I retired.   So now we are both retired and loving it!!!!  Our oldest son married Cheryl Dayton and they have 2 sons, Scott who is 24 and Kevin who is 21.   Scott lives in Phoenix, AZ and just recently became engaged to Katie Yost---they will be married in Sal Diego on July 20 next year.   Scott graduated from UCSD before getting a job in Phoenix.   Kevin is a senior at SDSU and will graduate in June of next year.    Our younger son, Mike, is married to Christine Anderson, and they have 1 son and 1 daughter.   Ryan is attending Berkeley (UCB) in northern California where he is a freshman.  He is the "brainy" one  of the group.   He says he loves college life.   Then there is our baby of the family, Danielle, and she is a sophomore in high school. She is just a doll, loves school, sports, and now that the boys are older, she comes over weekly to mow the grass for grandpa!!   Robert is vice-president of Research and Development for a company that makes products for laboratories ---- he flies a lot, as he is a spokesman for the company.   Mike is a professional photographer-----commerical photography, and owns his own business.

I really enjoyed reading the info you sent about your family.  Yesterday I received a Version 16 FTM, as mine was Version 11.  Now I am going to wait for one of the boys or either of our sons to install it.  I am not very good at doing that

Take care, Dolores

I am interested in locating information about my Great Grandfather.  I believe he was in Franklin County in the 1880's, I had one uncle that was born there I believe, If I am not mistaken my great grandfathers name was John Martin and the last census I saw, in 1870 he was in Tennessee where my grand father was born in 1876.

Good Morning Folks:

In 1920 HEZEKIAH WM.  (age 26) AND NANCY J. DICKERSON DAVIS (age 22) are listed in Watalula, AR. At that time his children are listed as: LETHA MAE age 2 yrs and 1 mos., JEWEL FAYE age 1 and 3/mos. Living with them MARGARET KELLEY DAVIS (AGE 68).
I do not been al be to search the 1920 census yet.
In 1999 I was able to get in touch with LETHA MAE DAVIS CHILDERS. I was able to go to Ozark, AR. and meet with LETHA and her sister SHIRLEY. There was ten years difference in their ages and the two was the only left.  They took me to the BELT CEMETERY and I found the rest of my family.

When I came to the door of LETHA's house she opened the door and we hugged. I was so blessed to have known her. There was a spilt in the family about 1907 because one of the family divorced his wife and MD. his 2nd cousin. This why my cousin and I who research the DAVIS family could not tie them together.

I hope this is not too long but the information needs to be out there.

Thank You,

Subject: Franklin County; Barnes Cemetery  Information

To Whom it  may concern
This is actually a Forward to an E-Mail  sent by myself yesterday to the person whose name was on the Franklin County  website (Vicky Dennis) as being the contact person for updates or changes to  the Barnes Cemetery listing.  I am not sure as to who would be the  volunteer overlooking this issue so am hoping this to the webmaster or the  appropriate person.

I have  recently been informed that an addition to your list of those buried in Barnes  Cemetery near Ozark should include the  following:
                                                                        Annie  Frame  Plymale

Apparently the  Headstone was placed sometime after 1995 by her Grandchildren.  I have  included a photograph of same.  This picture was provided to me by Ron  Frame and I believe he is the one that took this picture.  Annie Frame  Plymale was my Grandmother.
I hope it’s possible to  update this list.  Thank you in advance for any help you might be in  doing  same.

Hi Don-
Was on the Franklin County Website and noticed that the Barnes Cemetery site had yet to be updated to include the name of my Grandmother, Annie Frame Plymale as being buried their in a marked grave. Have I missed something or am I looking in the wrong place?
Thank you for your continued hard work on this site and your consideration of my request.

My surnames are RASH/ BEAN/ HARWICK
My Grt-grt grandfather & grt-grt grandmother died in Franklin County, Arkansas.  Their names were Joseph Parks RASH,born in 1809 Tennessee & Cynthia BEAN RASH , born 1813 in North Carolina .They were on the 1870 census of Horsehead township, p.o. Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. The last proof I have of him alive is October 1, 1871 from a letter he wrote to his son , Silas P.RASH. I have another affadative from another son, Joseph Presley RASH, that Joseph Parks RASH & Cynthia BEAN RASH, both died in Franklin County, Arkansas. I can't find them on any 1880 census so assume they died between 1871  & !880. I can find no proof of death as I don't have a date. Silas P.

Hello Nancy...

Yes you have a connection.  The Nannie in the 1860 is aged 5, and is my great great grandmother Nancy M. In a history of St. Mary's Church in Altus, the priest/author refers to prominent US labor leaders visiting Denning. He seems to be talking about the spring of 1912. He wrote, "It was the time when Socialism made great propaganda. Eugene Debs and Emma Goldman and Mother Jones had lectured at the Union Hall at Denning."

Can anyone suggest where I might find information about these individuals speaking in Denning?

Elkanah's wife, Mary Elizabeth Ward Anderson, died January 1877 at Cass, Arkansas.

I really don't know where the death date of 21 Nov 1880 for Elkanah Anderson came from.

Since I can't find him in the 1880 census, either living alone or with/near any of his children, I think he may have died before Nov. 1880.

Thanks for the reply.

I am looking for any help.  My great great grandmother was Lenora (Nora) HARRIS born about 1885 in Arkansas.  I believe her 2nd marriage was to a PYRON.  This man would be my great grandfathers dad.  I think that Nora and the mystery PYRON would have been married in Franklin County, possibly Ozark around 1906 or 1907.  My great grandfather, Orville, was born in 1907 in Ozark.  Nora and Orville are listed on the 1910 Census in Franklin County, Wallace Twp living with Nora's parents, Gaines & Belle.  Nora is listed as having been married for 4 years.  Nora then married a William MOUNCE and Orville took the name of MOUNCE.  I believe they moved to Oklahoma shortly after.  Any clue or info would be helpful.
