a doctor. I went along for six or eight months with my doctor. One day, coming home from his office, I met a man who stopped me and asked me how my foot was doing. I told him that it was not doing very good. It looked like I might lose it! He told me that if I did not stay from that doctor I would lose it. He said,  "I'll bet you have proud flesh in your foot."  I told him my doctor said there was. He told me when I got home to pour out a pan full of coal oil and set my foot in this pan of oil and let it soak for a while, and do this six or eight times every day; that if I would do this, my foot would get well in no time. When I got home, I told Ma. She said that she would try this man's remedy for a while. Well, we did. Sure enough, my foot was well in two or three weeks.

Although I would hop to the cotton field and pick cotton on one foot, I did not have to do this. I just got so tired of staying in the house. I've often wondered why Pa did not get me a crutch. I had to hop every where I went!

INVADED BY BAPTISTS

One night,  in 1892, Ma and Pa went to bed talking about church trouble. Pa said to my Ma,  "Jane, those Baptists are taking this country over and there is nothing we can do about it."  My Ma said,  "Harrison, I would get out of this bed and go to old Pleasant Hill and do my best to stop some of those Baptists!"  My Pa got up and put on his best clothes, got old Tom, our horse, and started for the Church.

I overheard them talking, and by this time was getting pretty scared. I didn't know what a Baptist looked like. I though it was something that would come and take us all away or kill us!

I heard Pa open the front gate and go off. I could hear old Tom's hoof pounding the ground. By this time I had the cover all pulled over my head. I stuck my head out and said to Ma,  "I'll bet my Pa does stop them old Baptists when he gets there."  Needless to say, my Pa didn't stop them. In fact, they are still gaining ground!
