saddle, paying me top wage of the day. After I had a few drinks, I began to talk. I told him I would leave my sister and go home with him. I got on his horse and we rode double. We made it okay.

     The next day was Sunday, so we got on his horse and rode to church. Sunday night, after church, we went out to get on his horse to go home. By this time he had changed his mind. He told me it was too hard on his horse for both of us to ride double. That I would have to walk home. Well, I stood around the church trying to figure out which way to go. No tongue can tell how little I felt! I was so ashamed of my behavior. I promised myself that I would never listen to another drunk as long as I lived.

     The Bible says, "Be sure, your sins will find you out." Well, that night while walking home, you can be sure I found my sin had caught up with me! I had left my good home and followed after a drunk.

     After a while I began to come to my senses. I wondered if my sister would have me back. It was five or six miles to walk to where my sister's home was. After much arguing with myself, I decided to go back like the prodical son. I decided I would tell her how sorry I was about leaving home. I hid what whiskey I had left in the field. The next morning I expected a good going over from her, but after breakfast, she began to outline the work to do.

IN THE TIMBER

     My brother, Morris, and I would work together except for one job. We took a job cutting a man's hickory timber and hauling it. We were both broke. We didn't have a dime in our pockets, so we started cutting timber. Morris would say to me, "Fratus, let's not laugh when we go to load this timber." We always got tickled when we tried to lift anything together. He would say this every day, the whole week we were cutting the hickory bolts. We sure didn't want to start his laughing again! I would tell him that I wasn't about to laugh.         We finally got the timber all cut on Saturday,
