GRAND CENTRAL GARAGE COMPANY



A branch of retail trade that holds a conspicuous place in any community is that of the jeweler and watchmaker, and a house that holds high rank in Paragould is that of M. E. Lackner, whose attractive store is located at 113 South Pruet Street. This is one of Paragould's old reliable business houses, and was founded about 26 years ago, since which time it has kept pace with the march of progress, ultimately resulting in the creation of a magnificent jewelry store, with but few equals and no superiors in Northeast Arkansas. It took more than a quarter century to bring Lackner store to it's present high standard of excellence and during all of that period the remarkable growth of this enterprise has been watched by the local people with much interest. Today the citizens of this city and a section point with pardonable pride to the handsome store of M. E. Lackner, and quite loyally lend their support to it's further advancement. The establishment is equipped with massive oak fixtures and solid plate glass cases for the display of the large stock carried and the interior represents a combination of good taste and convenience. The stock is one of the largest to be found in this section and comprises watches, clocks, diamonds, jewelry, silverware, cut glass, hand painted china, fishing tackle, etc. A well equipped repair department is maintained where high grade watch, clock and jewelry repair work is executed by an expert in this line.

Mr. Lackner is a local citizen of prominence and is always in the forefront of any civic, commercial or social improvement.


CITY DRUG COMPANY


Obviously next to the all-important fact of Paragould's prosperity is the outward evidence of her well-being in the size and stability of her manufacturing industries. Prominent among the largest and most successful industries located in Paragould is The Henry Wrape Company. Incorporated, manufacturers of tight barrel staves and circle headings. This concern was founded in 1880, being the pioneer in its line in this section, and was incorporated in 1893. The business is located in the northern part of the city and in addition to the Paragould plants they also operate a large plant of a similar nature at Searcy, AR. When operating at full capacity the firm employs in this city about 250 workmen. Its payroll goes far toward making Paragould a thriving retail center.

Up to a short time ago this company operated two plants here, but one was destroyed by fire, although it contemplates rebuilding at no distant date. The concern has private tracks connected with both the Cotton Belt and Missouri Pacific Railways, enabling it to receive timber and ship the finished product in carlots at a minimum of expense and labor.

The Henry Wrape Company has for its officers the following widely known and public spirited business men: Henry Wrape, President; H. J. Wrape, Vice President and Treasurer, and C. A. Raith, Secretary. This concern has been a prominent factor in the upbuilding of Paragould and is entitled to special mention in this publication.

CLYDE MACK MERCANTILE COMPANY


Progressing by leaps and bounds, with every improvement in the arts and sciences, the automobile business has kept pace with, if indeed, it has not advanced beyond all other lines of business. Paragould has a number of first-class automobile firms, and one worthy of special mention on account of the high quality of the forked turned out and efficient service to car-owners, is the garage of H. Feltenberger. This establishment is devoted to the repair of cars of all makes and a specialty is made of repair work of the highest possible class on Studebaker and Chevrolet automobiles, this being the local service station for these cars. This business is operated in connections with the Paragould Auto Sales Co. at 113 West Emerson Street. Mr. Feltenberger has had charge since May 1, 1918. He is a young man of progressive ideas and an expert in this particular line, having connected with the automobile business for years. He employs the most competent assistants and no job is too difficult for the firm to handle in a prompt and satisfactory manner. He is a live wire business man and has placed his establishment among the leaders in this line in this city.


J. C. ADAMS


Conspicuous prominence is maintained in the field of structural enterprise by Alvey's Tin Shop, of which J. M. Alvey is proprietor. This business is located in modern quarters on Court Street, first door east of the Paragould Trust Company. The shop is equipped with the latest improved machinery and devices for the manufacture of all kinds of tin and sheet metal products. They install skylights, ventilators, ceilings, manufacture ridge roll cresting and everything in the sheet metal products line, also repair tanks automobile radiators, gasoline stoves, etc. The work of this establishment may be found on hundreds of the best building of the city. No job is too difficult for the concern to handle and none is too small to receive prompt attention. This is of the most modern plants of its kind in Northeast Arkansas and since it entered the local field some ten or twelve years ago has built up an enviable reputation for turning out high grade work at modern prices. Mr. Alvey is too well and favorably known to the local public to need any words of introduction in these columns. He is a progressive citizen and a wide-awake "booster" for Paragould and Greene County.


STAR BAKERY


In giving the names of representative business houses of Paragould, mention must necessarily be made of J. T. Agee, dealer in general merchandise, with modern and spacious quarters at 111 N. Pruet Street. Mr. Agee is formerly of Morehouse, MO., where he engaged in the same line. He has been operating in Paragould about four years and has been at his present location since last March. His stock represents the best to be had from the representative jobbers and manufacturers and comprises staple and fancy groceries, notions, shoes, men's work clothing, household necessities, etc. This is a store where the dollar does its full duty and one where a fair and square deal goes hand in hand with each and every transaction. Mr. Agee's extensive experience in mercantile pursuits enables him to buy the best goods at the most economical figure and his prices are as low as can be had anywhere. Since locating here he has gained the fullest confidence of the masses and built up a substantial and steadily increasing patronage. He is a wide-awake business man and a constant booster for the community in which he is operating.
