Of the great staple branches and departments of business represented in Paragould, not one is more fully nor more richly developed than that of the lumber interests. The recognized leader in this line in this section and a concern that stands at the head of the list among the largest enterprises of a similar nature in the country, is the East Arkansas Lumber Company, home builders and prominent dealers in all kinds of lumber, building material, sash, doors, windows and screens, etc., with general office and headquarters at 316 North Pruet Street. The yards and sheds at this point cover over a half city block and they have the very best of facilities in every department, enabling them to take care of a large volume of trade at a minimum of expense and labor.

The Company maintains large branch yards at the following points: Marmaduke, Walnut Ridge, Rector, and Blytheville, Ark., Cardwell, Hornersville, Caruthersville and Haiti, Mo., and Lake Providence, LA. Each of the branch yards command an extensive and growing patronage and each has its own local manager. The officers of the company are, J. W. Trieschmann, Secretary and General Manager and T. L. Huddleston, Treasurer and Local Manager. McDONALD'S TAXI-CAB SERVICE


This firm established business in Paragould on Feb 1, 1918, and since that date has taken it's toll out of the business in its line in this community. The headquarters of the concern are located at the Grand Central Garage, 111 W. Highland Street. They furnish unexcelled Taxi-Cab Service to any part of  the city or country, meet all trains promptly and make a specialty of country drives.  The late model, speedy and easy riding cars are at the disposal of patrons, day or night, and are sent out in care of  competent and careful drivers who knows every part of the city and surrounding territory. Their prices are as low as consistent with first-class service. The business is owned and managed by Bob J. McDonald. He is a young man of unlimited energy and business ability and numbers his friends by the source among both the local and traveling public. When in need of service of this kind, you will make no mistake in giving Mr. McDonald a trial. 


GOODWIN & JEAN


The name of Goodwin & Jean has become a household word among the farmers of Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. This firm is a  large buyer and shipper of poultry, eggs , hides, furs  and wool, etc., paying top-notch prices  for these commodities year in and an year out.  This is a branch of Goodwin & Jean of Jackson, MO. The Paragould branch has been in operation since 1900, and during that time has enjoyed the fullest confidence of the public and built up a trade that runs up into generous figures. This concern has been a powerful factor in stimulating the poultry  industry in this section because it has afforded a good and active market during all seasons. The goods bought at this point are shipped to Delta and Campbell Missouri., where the company has a large branch houses.  The business in this city is located on the East Poplar Street, on the tracks of  the  Iron Mountain Railway..  It is under that capable management of R. L. Otey, one of  the best posted men in this line in the State. He is honest and conscientious in his  undertaking and the booster for the city and county. 


TURNER, DAY & WOOLWORTH HANDLE CO., Inc.


With references to Paragould's commercial affairs, the manufacturing activities must always occupy a prominent position as promoting materially the industrial importance of the city, and in our review of those enterprises that have contributed to the high standing that Paragould now holds in the business world, there  are none more worthy of mention than the Turner, Day & Woolworth Handle Company Inc., manufactures of hickory Axe, Pick, Sledge, Hatchet and  Mining Tool Handles. This industry was originally established in the fall of 1901, and October 11 last the present company succeeded the Hartzell Handle Company. The plant was built under the personal supervision  W. L. Graves the present manager. After managing five year's he was transferred to Cairo division where he remained for five years, after which was returned to Paragould and again assumed management. He has been with the company for 36 years and is one of the best posted men in this line in the country. The company has three branch plants under the present supervision of the Paragould Division , and all money for material and labor passes through this office. Here and at the three branches they furnish employment for about 80 workman.   This company also has large plants at Memphis, Tenn., Beaumont, Texas, Cairo, Ill.,  Nashville, Tenn., Bowling Green, Ky., and other points, being one of the largest concerns of its kind in the country.

The Paragould plant is provided with the latest improved machinery and conducted  according to the most  scientific principles of manufacture. The quality of the products of the company has enabled them to develop a trade that extends throughout the North American Continent. Much of the success of the plants are under the Paragould Division has been do to the efficient management of Mr. Graves.  He is a man of unlimited energy and progressiveness and is a constant worker for the welfare of the community.


CO-OPERATIVE STORES COMPANY


One of the most essential things to happiness is good living, and want is more essential to good living than good groceries? When  you think of groceries of the better quality you are bound to have in mind  the establishment whose name adorns this brief article. This store was established in 1914. It is one of a chain of first-class stores operated by the Co-Operative Stores Company in Arkansas and Tennessee, the that company maintaining its headquarters at Memphis. It has an unauthorized  capital of  $200,000.00, buys in large quantities and in turn quotes prices as low as can be had anywhere. There slogan is, "We Feed the People."  They handle everything, commonly carried by the best of firms of a similar nature, and their service is up to the highest standard of efficiency. The business has had a steady growth from the very outset, and enjoys a premium trade among the best families in the community. The officers are C. A. Worthy, president; J. W. Newman, secretary; and  C. B. Nelson, treasurer. The Paragould store is under the efficient management of  L. V. Hale. He is a man of the ripest sort of  experience in this line, a gentleman of liberal ideas and methods and citizen of the highest prominence in the business circles of the city.


HARDESTY & LACKEY


A glance at the beautiful store at 111 South Pruet Street will pave the way for a profitable  acquaintance with one of Paragould's finest equipped, best stocked and most popular retail drug establishment. There are  few retail houses in Paragould that are better known than that of of the above firm and none enjoy a better reputation for handling high grade goods, affording efficient service and quoting moderate prices. The firm   business September 1, 1913 and since that time has been a favorite headquarters for the obtaining of  anything in the line of pure drugs, toilet articles, druggist's sundries, cigar's, tobacco,  rubber and leather goods, kodaks, kodaks supplies, stationery, soda water, ice cream, ect.  They make a specialty of " Dixie" and "Salko" family remedies, the first to name being their own line and and one of the best on the market.  They also carry the Ansco line of kodaks and supplies. The fixtures in use are of the latest type, finished in Mission Oak, and these together with the large marble fountain, with glass and mahogany trimmings, give the interior an appearance which for beauty and general utility is matched by but few drug stores of this section. This firm is composed of  Dr. C. A.  Hardesty and G. A. Lackey. The first named is a local physician of prominence while Mr. Lackey is a graduate and registered pharmacist who has all of the details of the business at his finger tips. Both gentlemen are well and favorably known here, and may always be found working faithfully for the best interest of the community of which their establishment forms so component a part.
