PARAGOULD WHOLESALE GROCERY COMPANY



This wholesale concern is one of the representative institutions of its type in Northeast Arkansas. The main floor is 100 x 100 feet in size and they also utilize 2 basements, one being 50 x 100 and the other 50 x 60 feet in size. Every foot of the floor space in the warerooms is utilized except the necessary passageways. The boxes, bales and barrels are piled to the roof, and the wonder this that any one should be so competent to keep track by the vast amount of stuff stored in the building.

The Paragould Wholesale Grocery Company began business here on January one, 1912, and a sense that date has taken its place among the strong, growing and successful enterprises of its town and field. "Everything and groceries and grocery sundries, covers the range of the house's business. Gets capitalization is ample for all purposes and the most modern methods of the business conduct characterizes its operations. It's six and a half years in the trade have brought intimate acquaintance with the territory and full knowledge of its requirements. Purchases for the company are made in enormous quantities, whereby it gets the best goods at the lowest possible figures and can and does give the customer the benefit the hits large capital and judicious buying. J. E. Wilbourn, president and general manager; A. Bertig, vice-president; A.M. Reedy, secretary, buyer and manager of sales, W. J. Pierce, treasurer and credit man and H. S. Trice compose the list of officers and directors of the company. The gentleman in charge of the establishment are very pleasant to meet with, either in business for social intercourse, and their geniality is one of the most useful assets of the house. Visitors are shown through the house by courteous attendants, and all information that may be sought is given fully and freely upon any feature of the business that is proper for an outsider to know.

This business is well located on the tracks of the Cotton Belt and Missouri Pacific Railroads, and then they also maintain arriving branch houses at Piggott, Arkansas and Kennett, Missouri. The company employees six efficient traveling salesman and its territory comprises practically all of Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. Large concerns like this give evidence of Paragould's importance as a commercial center. this is only one of the man the large enterprises that are located here, and its growth in a business barometer which registers the development of the city along with the others.


UNION HANDLE COMPANY


Paragould has a number of enterprising industrial plants as flourishing as any in the county. Some of these concerns sell their output over a wide radius of territory and have built up a nation-wide reputation. In this connection, special mention is due the Union Handle Company, Incorporated, manufactures of all kinds of high grade oak and hickory handles. This is a branch of the La Pierre-Sawyer Handle Co., of Jackson, MO. They have four other branch plants in northeast Arkansas. The business in this city was established in 1915, and is under the efficient management of H.R. Woodard. He is an energetic, thoroughly wide-awake and progressive business man and always does his full share toward the upbuilding of the community in which he resides. 

The Union Handle Company  gets its timber in the rough from the forests of the adjacent territory and a portion of its products are  finished at the local plant, while the remainder is sent to one of the company's finishing plants for finishing and polishing. This concern has built up a business connection of great magnitude which extends to many States of the Union, and is doing much toward spreading the name and fame of Paragould abroad to other and less favored communities.


DE BONS & COMPANY


Absolute confidence in the honesty and integrity of any enterprise catering to public patronage is one of the most necessary essentials to that concern's success, and this is responsible in a great measure for the business enjoyed by the concern whose name heads this brief sketch.

This enterprise was established in September, 1917. It is devoted to the manufacture and repair to all kinds of tin and sheet metal products, a specialty being made of skylights, ventilators, ridge roll cresting, roofing and all kinds of tin and sheet metal used in construction work. This business is situated at 107 W. Highland street. The shop is provided with modern machinery and tools and all orders entrusted to the firm are executed with promptness by men who are thoroughly familiar with this line.

The gentlemen at the head of this business are J.B. De Bons and J. O. Stewart. They are enterprising business men who thoroughly appreciate the necessity of not only keeping their enterprise in the "limelight" but community as well, and are live boosters of which Paragould is proud.


J.C. CROWELL


The history of the grocery store belonging to J.C. Crowell is one of continued success. Success, not of the old kind but the new - progressive. There was a time when people were ignorant. Now success means not smart trades, but honest trades. The people know now where to go to get their money's worth, and it is not the large profits that now spell success, but the many profits. The local people know that when they trade with J.C. Crowell they are getting the equivalent for their money. This is one of the pioneer retail enterprises of the city. It was established about a quarter of a century ago and it's owner has been in the grocery business continuously longer than any other firm in the city. The stock carried is complete to the minutest detail and comprises about everything in staple and fancy groceries of the better class. A special feature is made of the famous "California" line of canned goods, which in quality has no superior on the market. Prompt deliveries are made to any part of the city. This store is located at the corner of Court and Second Streets and occupies a spacious brick building which is finely adapted for the purpose it is used. Mr. Cromwell is one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of the county. During his career here he has watched the growth of Paragould with interest and pride and has contributed both time and money toward the upbuilding of the city and vicinity.


LAMB-GARNER DRUG COMPANY


Few little cities in Arkansas contain better or more finely appointed drug establishments than  does Paragould. Taking rank as one of the foremost in the list is that of Lamb-Garner Drug Company, located at 110 W. Court Street. Although on only established since January 1, 1918, this firm has already built among the representative retail houses of the city. In equipment quality and quantity of stock it has no superiors in this section. The fixtures are finished in mahogany and the large plate glass cases keep stock free from dirt and moisture. The stock comprises pure drugs, chemicals, proprietary medicines, rubber and leather goods, physician's supplies, stationary, office supplies, school books, paints, oils, varnishes, stock and poultry remedies, cigars, tobaccos, etc. A specialty is made of accurate prescription work. the gentlemen at the head of this establishment are J.H. Lamb,M.D., president; Gilbert F. Garner, secretary and treasurer; F.M. Scott, M.D., G.P. Bridges, M.D. and Ray Edwards. They are among the leading business and professional men of this city and are willing contributors to every project that promises desirable improvement in local conditions.


CITY PLUMBING COMPANY


As a sanitary measure for the promotion of health, the plumbing trade occupies a front position in the ranks of modern improvement, and the perfection to which this industry has been brought, is the best comment on the intelligence which has been devoted to it. In this department of industry together with steam and furnance heating, the City Plumbing Company has achieved a well earned reputation. This business is a pioneer one, having been established about fifteen years ago. The work of the concern is of the highest and they have been serving hundreds of their customers for years. A full line of plumbingsupplies, pipe and pipe fittings is kept in stock and work is executed both in the city and surrounding country. This business is owned by A.G. Thompson. He is a man of business ability and is progressivein his methods. He is recognized by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances as a man of sterling worth and citizen of high repute.
