Mabel Alberta May Greer, 87, of Paragould, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

She was born Sept. 23, 1916, in Elgin. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin Lee May; her second husband, Amos Greer; one son, Marvin Lee May; her parents, Walter and Mary Jane Hohn Burgess; one sister, Mamie Allen; one brother, Ted Burgess; and two grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Ryles of Hot Springs and Mary Lee Wycoff of Paragould; two brothers, Alfred Burgess of Newport and Buddy Burgess of California, one sister, Ruby Dillon of Newport; four grandchildren, Kathy Boone and Keith Wycoff, both of Paragould, and Melody Ryles and Zachary Ryles, both of Hot Springs; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heath Colonial Chapel in Paragould with the Rev. Jim Bynum and the Rev. Leon Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Harvey's Chapel Cemetery in Marmaduke under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

Pallbearers are Don Mandrell, Jerry Manley, Brian Sides, Bryan Hooter, Larry Hooter and Stacy Witcher.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lynn Humphrey

Lynn Humphrey, 49, of Paragould, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at his home.

He was born Dec. 20, 1954, in Paragould and was disabled.

He was preceded in death by his father, Vester Humphrey.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Humphrey of Paragould; his mother and stepfather, Jewel Dean and Joe Andrews of Paragould; one son, Tony McGhee; one stepson, Curtis Hall, of Paragould; one daughter, Jessica Hall of Paragould; three stepdaughters, Nikki Hall, Jennifer Breckenridge and Ambi Cross, all of Paragould; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Randy and Kathy Humphrey of Rector and Kenny and Sissy Humphrey of Little Rock; one sister and brother-in-law, Kathie and Mike Benson of Rector; and six grandchildren.

Friends and relatives wishing to attend a memorial service are to meet at 412 Bard Road East at 1:30 p.m. today. A riverside service is to be held at the Bard Trussle at 2 p.m.

Helen J. Simpson

Helen J. Simpson, 75, of Paragould, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

She was born June 10, 1928, in Lester. She was retired from General Electric and was former owner of Art's Auto Parts. She was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by one son, Billy Joe Thompson; her parents, G.H. and Ellen Craft; two sisters, Wilma Lute and Dorothy Giles; and three brothers, Rex Craft, Paul Craft and Chester Craft.

Survivors include her husband, Art Simpson of the home; two sons, Don Thompson of Pine Bluff and Gary Thompson of Jonesboro; one daughter, Danna Zarlingo of Jonesboro; four grandchildren, Lara Thompson of Hot Springs, Jeremy Williams of Annapolis, Md., Blake Williams of Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Caitlin Cooper of Jonesboro; one great-grandchild, Haley Williams of Annapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Linwood Cemetery with Bob Crabb officiating and under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.

The procession will leave Mitchell Funeral Home at 1:45 p.m. Monday.

Pallbearers are Grady Davis, Hugh Walker, George Fisher, Teddy Blanton, Dennis Hogland, Mark Zarlingo and Dwight Williams.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Clifford "Pa" Hoyt Barnhart

Clifford "Pa" Hoyt Barnhart, 91, of Marmaduke, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Greene Acres Nursing Home in Paragould. He was born Aug. 26, 1912, in Greene County. He was retired from the Greene County Road Department. He was a member of Marmaduke General Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Mae Francis Barnhart; two sons, James Barnhart and Jerry Barnhart; one son-in-law, Ted Mitchell; one great-grandson, Andrew Mitchell; and two brothers, Carmen "Cotton Boll" Barnhart and Dolf Barnhart.

Survivors include one son, Danny Barnhart of Marmaduke; one daughter, Frances Mitchell of Marmaduke; one daughter-in-law, Laveda Barnhart; one brother, Donald Barnhart of Arizona; six grandchildren, Scott Mitchell, Tammy Johns, Jerome Mitchell, Lisa Fletcher and Dale Mitchell, all of Paragould, and Jamie Bennett of Marmaduke; one sister, Mary Ann Stokes of Holy Pond, Ala.; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at Irby Funeral Home Chapel in Marmaduke with Bro. Kim Bridges officiating. Burial will be at Harvey's Chapel Cemetery in Marmaduke.

Active pallbearers are Scott Mitchell, Jerome Mitchell, Dale Mitchell, Jack Fletcher, Casey Fletcher, Jeremy Mitchell, Josh Mitchell and Zachary Mitchell.

Honorary pallbearers are Gary Franks, Doyne Shaw, Johnny Bozark, Scott Flannigan and Edward Bennett.

William E. Bell

William E. Bell, 89, of Decatur, Ind., died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. He was born Dec. 10, 1914, in Piggott. He worked for Krick and Tyndall as a custodian.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lennie Underwood Bell; and his wife, Letha Bell.

Survivors include one son, Gerald Harmon of Enterprise, Okla.; two daughters, Linda Shaw of Liberty Center, Ind., and Shirley Davis of Piggott; one brother, Earnest Bell of Piggott; one sister, Mrs. J.C. (Martha) Blalack of Paragould; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Irby Funeral Home Chapel in Piggott with Daniel York officiating. Burial will be at the Piggott Cemetery.

Visitation was from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday at Irby Funeral Home Chapel.

Reverend Leonard Bunch

Leonard Bunch, 74, of Black Oak, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was born in Black Oak and lived in Jonesboro most of his life. He was a long-time Baptist minister who founded and pastored several Baptist churches in northeast Arkansas. He was also a retired salesman and a member of the New Hope-Black Oak Baptist Church in Caraway. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Bunch; one brother, M.G. Bunch; and his parents, Charlie and Myrtle McHalffey Bunch.

Survivors include his wife, Annette J. Bunch of the home; two sons, Lynn Bunch of Little Rock and Tim Bunch of Jonesboro; one daughter, Sherri Gray of Paragould; three stepdaughters, Carla Swan of Bay, Janie Ellis of Searcy and Cindy Adams of Russellville; two stepsons, Darrell Jones of Kennett and Ricky Jones of Harrisburg; one sister, Inez Weaver of Shreveport, La.; one brother, Monroe Bunch of Jonesboro; four grandchildren, Carson Bunch, Stephanie Gray, Justin Gray and Branddon Gray; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in Emerson Memorial Chapel in Jonesboro. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Jonesboro.

Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Emerson Funeral Home in Jonesboro. For lasting memorials, the family asks that consideration be given to the New Hope-Black Oak Baptist Church near Caraway, or to the Black Oak Baptist Church in Black Oak.

Ralph Earl Crain, Sr.

Ralph Earl Crain, Sr., 61, of Jonesboro, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at his residence. He was born Jan. 6, 1941, in Ravenden Springs. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served in Vietnam. He was retired from World Color as a tool and die maker. He was affiliated with Temple Baptist Church in Jonesboro. He was a member of the Jonesboro Masonic Lodge Number 129, and a member and past state president of the Arkansas Society of Sons of the American Revolution.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Carolyn June Crain; and one brother, Luster Ray Crain.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Miller Crain of Jonesboro; his parents, Cleatus and Mary Crain of Jonesboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph Earl, Jr., and Trina Crain of Jonesboro, and Brian Scott and Jamie Crain of Jonesboro; one brother, Gaylon Crain of Jonesboro; one sister, Cleata Daniel of Jonesboro; and two grandchildren, Jonathan and Kaylee Crain of Jonesboro.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Paragould with the Revs. Barry Crain and Jerry Jolly officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Mitchell Funeral Home. A Masonic service will be at 7 p.m. today at Mitchell Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Randall Miller, Mike Miller, Clovis Reddick, Rudy Randleman, Jimmy Huckabay and James Daniel.

Ruth Loraine Lowry

Ruth Loraine Lowry, 93, of Paragould, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Greene Acres Nursing Home in Paragould. She was born Dec. 7, 1910, in Paragould. She was retired from the Dunklin County Selective Service Board. She was secretary of the Delta Fair Board and a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and the Kennett County Club.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry D. Droke; her second husband, Bertran D. Lowry; her parents, John K. and Martha Lenore Howell Eubanks; one brother, John Albert Eubanks; one sister, Golda Merriam Eubanks; and five half-sisters.

Survivors include one niece, Sonya Hester and her husband, Dan, of Paragould; one nephew, Mike Eubanks and his wife, Sylvia, of Paragould; two great-nephews, Colin Hester and Timothy Eubanks; one brother and sister-in-law, James A. and Vera Eubanks of Paragould; one sister, Lottie K. Armstrong of Paragould; and other relatives, including the Hart and Kappelman families.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Kennett, Mo., with Rev. Ed Jansson officiating. No visitation has been scheduled.

Jimmie Eldon Pannells

Jimmie Eldon Pannells, 76, of Paragould, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. He was born July 13, 1927, in Cardwell, Mo. He was a retired machine operator with Martin Sprocket and Gear of Paragould. He was a member of the Lake Street Baptist Church of Paragould.

He was preceded in death by one son, Danny Pannells; one daughter, Gail Pannells; four brothers; one sister; and his parents, Jesse and Pearlie Burlock Pannells.

He is survived by his wife, Flossie Pannells of Paragould; one grandson, Chris Pannells of Walnut Ridge; nine nieces; and eight nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Heath Colonial Chapel in Paragould with the Rev. Wayne Faulkner officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Paragould.

Memorials may be made to Lake Street Baptist Church.

Wandle O. West

Wandle O. West, 72, of Shirland, Ill., died Sunday, April 4, 2004, in Swedish American Hospital. She was born March 6, 1932, the daughter of Johnny and Edith Melton Smith. She lived in the Shirland area for 23 years. She was married to Fred D. West of Paragould in 1949.

She is survived by her husband; four daughters and sons-in-laws, Cathy and Richard Mueller of Belvidere, Ill., Sharon and Dennis Campbell of Roscoe, Ill., Susan and Ron Downs of Shirland, and Sheila and William Larson of Durand, Ill.; one son, Jerry West of Rockford, Ill.; her grandchildren, Ryan and Hannah Mueller, Charles and Natalie West, Kimberly and Craig Campbell, Brandi Smith, Jim, Joshua and Kayla Downs, and Eric and Ashley Larson; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Velma and Marion Hendrix and Dorothy and O.H. Kappleman, both of Paragould, and Jean and Conrad Garza of Graland, Texas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Hollis and Nancy Smith of Easley, S.C., and Doyle and Elaine Smith of Marshall, Ill.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Private funeral services will be held. Burial will be in Shirland Township Cemetery in rural Shirland. McCorkle Funeral Home of Rockland, Ill., is in charge of services.

Linda Lou Carroll, 56, of Joliet, Ill., died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at her home.

She was born Oct. 11, 1947, in Rockford, Ill. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jefferson Cole; one brother, Jefferson Cole, Jr.; and one grandson, Michael McGarvey.

Mary Lorraine Morris, 81, of Paragould, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

She was born Oct. 18, 1922, in Minneapolis, Minn. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Dean Morris; and her parents, Albert and Mary Ellen McGowan Hoveland.

Survivors include one son, George A. Morris of Paragould; four daughters, Mary Ellen Morris and Anna Marie Brady, both of Paragould, Patricia Hattersley of Marietta, Ga., and Margaret Jones of Woodstock, Ga.; one brother, Scott Hoveland of Minneapolis; one sister, Patricia Hoveland of Saint Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father John Marconi and Rex Bouldin officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Paragould under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

Gladys C. Sims, 93, of Paragould, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

He was born Dec. 8, 1910, in Greene County. He was a retired farmer and a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Horne; and his parents, George and Alice White Sims.

Survivors include two sons, Ricky Sims and Gerald Max Sims, both of Paragould; one daughter, Marvell Holifield of Paragould; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Heath Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Wayne McGill officiating. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Gardens in Paragould under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

Euba Bessie Maloney Wofford, 88, of Jonesboro, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

She was born Nov. 13, 1915, in Greene County. She was retired from the Paragould Home for the Golden Years as a nurse's aide.

She formerly operated a restaurant in Marmaduke. She attended the Second and Walnut Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Wofford; her parents, Lola Maloney Arnold and Walter Maloney; two sons, Bobby Darrell Wofford and Michael Denver "Mickey" Wofford; one grandson, Ricky Wofford; one sister, Eulene Vowell; and one brother, Merval Claxton.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Katye and Robert Davis of Jonesboro; one daughter-in-law, Phyllis Wofford of Zeigler, Ill.; three grandchildren, Susan Lunsford and husband Gary, of Harvest, Ala., Donna Palumbo and husband Scott, of Slidell, La., and Michael Wofford and wife Michelle, of Staunton, Ill.; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Paragould with James Henry Dortch officiating.

Burial will be in Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.

Charles Houston "Charlie" Bean, 80, of Paragould, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at his home.

He was born Aug. 21, 1923, in Paragould. He was a retired auto dealer and land owner. He was a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Logan and Minnie Bean; his foster parents, Hattie and Joe Wood; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Suzie Bean of Paragould; one daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Dr. Dwight Boggs of Paragould; one brother, Ted Bean of Springfield, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Amber Boggs, C.K. Bean and Casey Bean.

Graveside funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Linwood Cemetery with Scott Neathery officiating and under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.

The procession will leave Mitchell Funeral Home at 10:20 a.m. Friday.

Roy Jessie Wilcoxson, 83, of Lafe, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

He was born April 8, 1920, in Lexington, Ala. He was an auto mechanic and attended Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosella Daily Wilcoxson; his parents, William Jessie and Viola Michael Wilcoxson; two daughters, Peggy Wilcoxson and Teresa Wilcoxson; and one sister, Pearline Wilcoxson.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Larry Catt and Elaine and Bob Morris, both of Knob, and Marcia and Roger Farmer of Fenton, Mo.; four brothers, Tony Wilcoxson of Lafe, Dobbin Wilcoxson of East Peoria, Ill., Ralph Wilcoxson of Lema, Tenn., and Jessie Wilcoxson of Milliford, Mich.; two sisters, Hazel Reed of Biggers and Lucille Halm of Newayco, Mich.; four grandchildren, Parrish Morris of Knob, Larry Catt, Jr. of Jonesboro, Bruce Catt of Corning and Candy Bishop of Paragould; six great-grandchildren, Brandon Bishop of Paragould, Caleigh Catt and Clayton Catt, both of Corning, and Jacob Catt, Daniel Catt and McKenzie Catt, all of Jonesboro; and many nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Connie Jean Evans Anthony

Connie Jean Evans Anthony, 51, of Jonesboro, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at her home.

She was born in Cheyenne, Wyo., and lived in Arizona and Paragould before moving to Jonesboro 12 years ago. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her father, Conrad E. Evans.

Survivors include one daughter, Amber Long of Paragould; two sons, Rickey Long, Jr., of Kingman, Ariz., and Randy Long of Jonesboro; her mother and stepfather, Shirley and Jim Nall of Jonesboro; four sisters, Darla Turner of Jonesboro, Terry Nolen of Paragould, Johnnie Stone of Walnut Ridge and Debra Jo Cottle of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Jimmy Evans of Jonesboro and Perry Evans of Illinois; one grandson; and one granddaughter.

Graveside funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Log Cemetery with the Rev. John Soward and the Rev. Patty Soward officiating and under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Billie Lee Golden

Billie Lee Golden, 72, of Jonesboro, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

She was born in Alexandria, La., and lived in Fayetteville before moving to Jonesboro in 1966. She was a retired high school business education teacher and taught in Prairie Grove, Piggott and Paragould. She was a graduate of Arkansas State University and earned a master's degree in business education from the University of Arkansas. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, where she was a primary class teacher. She was a member of the ASU Faculty Women's Club and the St. Bernards Auxiliary. She was also a Master Gardener.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James F. Golden.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. James W. Golden of Little Rock and Dr. Stephen C. Golden of Jonesboro; one daughter, Dr. Nickie L. Golden of Honolulu, Hawaii; and four granddaughters, Leigh Ann Golden and Nancy E. Golden, both of Maumelle, Lyndsey B. Golden of Richmond, Va., and Kelsey C. Golden of Pocahontas.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro with Dr. Bruce Tippit officiating. Burial will follow in Nettleton Cemetery under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Pallbearers include Malcolm Culpepper and Mike Ebbert.

Betty Moore

Betty Moore, 82, of Corning, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

She was born July 27, 1921, in Success. She was a homemaker and a member of Success First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis L. Moore; her parents, Gilbert and Millie Rainey Hudson; four brothers, and four sisters.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Lewis L., Jr., and Sue Moore, of Searcy; one sister, Beulah Moore of Doniphan, Mo.; two grandchildren, Michael Moore and wife Alicia of Columbia, Mo., and Justin Moore and wife Candice of Monroe, La.; and one great granddaughter, Katie Moore of Columbia.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ermert Funeral Home Chapel in Corning with Wayne Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in Pope Chapel Cemetery in Currentview, Mo., under the direction of Ermert Funeral Home of Corning.

Winston Lee Quinn

 

Winston Lee Quinn, 63, of Jonesboro, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, near Millwood.

He was born in Paragould and had lived in Jonesboro for eight years.

He was the former owner of Quinn Aviation, Inc., for 43 years and was an agriculture pilot.

He was a Baptist and a member of the Arkansas Agriculture Aviation Association and the National Agriculture Aviation Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Alvin and Agnes Beatrice Houston Quinn.

Survivors include his wife, Paulette Hall Quinn of the home; one son, Roger Quinn of Paragould; one daughter, Nancy Sue Gaskins of Fountain, Colo.; one stepson, Kevin Carpenter of Jonesboro; one stepdaughter, Tara Johnson of Jonesboro; two brothers, Marshall Quinn of Paragould and Donald Quinn of Mountain Home; and 10 grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gregg Funeral Home Chapel with Mitch Ford officiating.

Burial is private and under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Bill Junior Jones, 79, of Paragould, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Regional Medical Center of Northeast Arkansas.

He was born Nov. 28, 1924, in Greene County. He was a former cotton ginner and attended church in Paragould.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Charline Jones; one brother, Charles Jones; and one son, Elmer Winn.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Jones of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Roberta Winn of Paragould; one daughter-in-law, Sue Winn of Paragould; one niece, Mary Pribnow of Ashippun, Wisc., one nephew, Larry Jones of Bay City, Texas; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today at Brown's Chapel Cemetery in Paragould with Bill Bass officiating and under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould. The procession will leave Mitchell Funeral Home at 2:45 p.m.

Pallbearers are Kyle Jones, Lynn Hetler, Daniel Winn, Melvin Nicholson, Troy Willcockson and Chris Bass.

Dennis Darrell Smith, 43, of Lake City, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, in Jonesboro.

He was born Aug. 30, 1960, in Rector. He was a self-employed construction worker and a Pentecostal.

He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Smith; and one brother, Ronald Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Gail Smith of the home; one son, Jackie Norman Smith of Lake City; one daughter, Sylvia Smith of Lake City; his mother, Eunice Smith of Jonesboro; two brothers, Jerry N. D. W. "Woody" Brashers

 

D. W. "Woody" Brashers, 79, of Paragould, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at St. Bernards Medical Center. He was born in O'Kean and had lived in Paragould since 1993. He was a retired contract engineer. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. He was a member of the Paragould Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie McClelland Brashers; his second wife, Inez Lovely Brashers; his parents, Robert and Elva Mayhan Brashers; two sons, Woody Brashers, Jr., and Robert Brashers; one daughter, Deborah Brashers; one brother, Victor Brashers; and one sister, Daphne Archer.

Survivors include one son, Gary Brashers of Huntsville, Ala.; one sister, Constance Thorne of Paragould; two grandchildren, Sam Brashers and Deborah Brashers; and one great-grandson, Kyle Brashers.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Emerson Memorial Chapel with Duane Dutka officiating. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery in Paragould under the direction of the Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Elmer Lee Choate, 78, of O'Fallin, Mo., (formerly of Success), died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at his residence. He was born Sept. 20, 1925, in Success. He was retired from Carter Carburetor in St. Louis, Mo. He worked for the Success Water Dept., drove a school bus for the Corning School District, and, most recently, worked for Old Time Pottery in Wentzville, Mo. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Apostolic Church in O'Fallin, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lurman Ray and Viva (Allen) Choate; one daughter, Patricia Fay Choate; two brothers, Richard Choate and Alvie Joe Choate; and one sister, Mary Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Choate of O'Fallin, Mo.; one son, Jim Choate of O'Fallin, Mo.; one daughter, Kay Dorton of Waukesha, Wis.; two grandsons, Scott Chott and Tim Choate; two granddaughters, Jackie Kauffman and Jeanna Choate; and one great-granddaughter, Brittany Kauffman.

Everett "Dooley" Foster, 78, of Paragould, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. He was born Aug. 24, 1925, in Bar Camp, Clay County. He was a retired farmer, cotton ginner and livestock trader. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete David and Onnie Ann Foster; one daughter, Eunice Kay Foster; three brothers, Homer, David and Junior Foster; and one sister, Earline Craig.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Inez Foster of Paragould; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Bonnie Foster and Stanley and Judy Foster, all of Paragould; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Joyce and Dallas Hooks of Paragould, Shirley Dianne and Colonel Michael Clements of Harker Heights, Texas, Sarah and Richard Spencer of Paragould, and Jamie and Richard Hill of Paragould; one brother, Dallas Ray Foster of Dyess; three sisters, Pauline Webber of Ariz., Betty Davis of St. Louis, Mo., and Bernice Tice of Hollandale, Miss.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Marvin Ray Jernigan

 

Marvin Ray Jernigan, 71, of Paragould, died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at his residence. He was born March 15, 1933, in Marianna. He attended Vanderbilt University and Arkansas State University. He was with the Corps of Engineers before becoming a land surveyor.

He was elected as Greene County Land Surveyor in 1969 and remained in that capacity until his death. He truly loved his work. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, was an excellent bridge player and an avid golfer and bowler. He was a member of the Arkansas Society of Professional Land Surveyors and the Paragould Bowling Hall of Fame. He is also a former member of the Paragould Civitan Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Augustus Marvin and Betty Taylor Jernigan; one brother, Edward Gene Jernigan; and one son, Russell Jernigan.

He is survived by his wife, Gretta Jernigan of Paragould; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ron Jernigan of Little Rock, Randell and Robin Jernigan of Jonesboro and Eddie and Becky Jernigan of Paragould; four daughters and three sons-in-laws, Rita Jernigan of Little Rock, Kerry and Greg Jewison of Green Bay, Wis., Jocelyn and Rick Noel of Paragould, and Michele and John French of North Little Rock; six grandchildren, Jennifer Hobbs of Jonesboro, Jarrod Hale of North Little Rock, Matt Hobbs of Jonesboro, Rebekah Jewison of Green Bay, Wis., Sean Jernigan of Paragould and Caitlin French of North Little Rock; three stepgrandsons, Josh, Zach, and Cody Noel of Paragould; one great granddaughter, Kaylee Amaya Seals of Jonesboro; one sister-in-law, Bernie Jernigan of Vienna, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Jettie Jewel Graham, 93, of Monette, formerly of Paragould, died Monday, April 12, 2004, at Monette Manor.

She was born Sept. 11, 1910, in Kennett, Mo. She was a homemaker and a member of Paragould Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Graham; and three brothers, R.B. Kennedy, Bill Kennedy and Rig Kennedy.

Survivors include four nieces, Doris Jenkins of Boise, Idaho, Evelyn Markin of Monette, Leola Hankins of Desoto, Mo., and Joyce.

John Wesley Cothren, 78, of Oxford, Miss., died Friday, April 16, 2004, at V.A. Nursing Home in Oxford.

He was born July 13, 1925, in Greene County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired farmer and a member of Warren's Chapel Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death his parents, Jackson and Cynthia Cothren; his stepmother, Zelma Cothren; and one brother, Mack Cothren.

Wanda Ruth Harrison, 71, of Paragould, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, at her residence. She was born April 15, 1933, in Paragould. She was a homemaker and affiliated with the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ostell and Iva Greenway; and by her husband, William F. Harrison, Jr.

She is survived by two daughters, Toni Barnett and husband, C.E. Barnett Jr. of Springdale, and Sue and Everett Adamson of West Memphis; and two grandchildren, Lindsey Barnett and Chase Barnett of Springdale.

Billie "Bill" E. Shelton Sr.

 

Billie "Bill" E. Shelton Sr., 60, of Cherokee Village, died Friday, April 16, 2004, at St. Bernards Medical Center. He was a retired tool maker from Chrysler Coop with 27 years of service, before he and his wife moved to Highland, where they have operated the Timberline Restaurant with their family and friends for the last six years.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Morris Shelton of Cherokee Village; two sons, Billie E. Shelton Jr. of Cherokee Village, and Kevin Shelton of Springdale; parents, Burl and Erma Shelton of Paragould; parents-in-law, Herman and Wanda Morris of Cherokee Village; grandchildren, Heather, Justin, Elizabeth and Kevin Shelton; one brother, Darrell Shelton of Paragould; and one sister, Patricia Graves of Paragould.

Funeral services were Monday at First Baptist Church in Hardy with Dr. Larry Kindrick officiating. Burial was in Bronaugh Cemetery in Hardy. Services were under the direction of Heath Funeral Home Oak Hill Chapel.

Clovis Ray Shultz, 84, of Rector, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. He was born March 3, 1920, in Pisgah, Ala., to Joseph Judson and Olier Lee Thomas Shultz. He was a supervisor for the assessment coordination division for the State of Arkansas. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, and had lived in Rector for 58 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Rector.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Shultz and Woodrow Shultz; and two sisters, Thelma Harper and an infant sister.

He is survived by his wife, Demetra Louise Elsass Shultz of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Marilyn Shultz of Springdale; one daughter, Terry Shultz of Rector; and one brother, Brennon Shultz of Georgia.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Rector with the Rev. Jimmy Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector. Services are under the director of Irby Funeral Service, Inc. of Rector.

H.C. "Stub" Townsend, 78, of Corning, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis, Tenn.

He was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Knobel. He was a farmer, a member of the Corning Masonic Lodge and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Thomas Carlton Fitzgerald, 87, of Paragould, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

He was born Aug. 17, 1916, in Greene County. He was retired from Emerson Electric Company in final assembly, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Artemas and Laverta Foster Fitzgerald; two brothers, Walter and Earl Fitzgerald; and one sister, Beatrice Fitzgerald.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Fitzgerald of the home; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Donald and Ernestine Fitzgerald and Mary Emma Fitzgerald, all of Paragould; one niece, Carolyn Vines of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and one nephew, Jim Fitzgerald of Paragould.

The funeral will be at noon today at Heath Colonial Chapel in Paragould with the Rev. Jim Bynum officiating. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Gardens in Paragould under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

He was born Dec. 10, 1932, in Beech Grove.

He was the son of Herbert M. and Clara Edith (Hots) Pigue. He was self-employed, and an elder at Mabelvale Church of Christ for more than 16 years. He loved to hunt and fish.

Jeptha F. Futrell, Jr.

Jeptha F. Futrell, Jr., 80, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. He was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Beech Grove. He graduated from Arkansas State University in 1956. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and was a lifetime member of the ASU Indian Club. He owned and operated the Party Store in Greene County for more than 30 years and served his country during World War II in the U.S. Marine Corp and later during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of the Civitan Club; the Paragould Jaycees; the City Beautiful Commission; the Paragould/Greene County Chamber of Commerce; the Paragould 2000 Club; and the Greene County Historical and Genealogical Society. He served as the Commissioner for the Arkansas Parks and Tourism from 1989 to 1995; he was a commissioner for Paragould City Light and Water from 1971 to 1975 and again from 1987 to 1996 serving as the chairman in 1995.

He was the president of the Greene County Beer Association, holding that office for more than 20 years, and he was awarded Outstanding Community Leader of the Year in 1992 by the Kiwanis Club.

He was a member of the American Legion and attended the First United Methodist Church of Paragould.

He served his community and his country well by being a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1974.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeptha F. Futrell, Sr. and Vestal Cothren Futrell; one brother, J.M. Futrell; one sister, Imogene Futrell, and one daughter, Linda Dianne Futrell.

He is survived by his bride of 62 years, Earlene Grady Futrell of Paragould; three sons and daughters-in-law, Drs. Mike and Josie Futrell of Shreveport, La., Danny and Linda Futrell of Paragould and Bill and Lee Anne Futrell of Eads, Tenn.; one sister, Wandalene Mitchell of Jonesboro; nine grandchildren and spouses, Jill and Michael Sloas of Paragould, Farrah and Brandon Ollis of Jonesboro, Steven and Heather Henderson of Paragould, Dawn Futrell of Los Angeles, Calif., Misty Futrell of Malibu, Calif., Frank and Laura Hurst of Yorkville, Ill., Lindsey and Philip Way of Little Rock, Mary Beth Eastlick and Allie Eastlick, both of Eads, Tenn.; and five great grandchildren, Zoe Elizabeth Sloas, Abby Lane Ollis, Andrew Futrell Ollis, Kiersten DeeAnne Henderson, and Hayden Brooke Hurst.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Heath Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Keith and the Rev. David Moseley officiating. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery in Paragould under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

Pallbearers are Johnnie Mack Futrell, David Futrell, Steve Grilletta, Dr. Ron Hall, Byron Futrell, Phil Futrell, Bill Rogers and John Craig Grady.

Honorary pallbearers are John McDaniel, Ed Gathings, Roy McSpadden, George Cook, Herschel Baldwin, H.T. Moore, Paul Smith, Charlie Partlow, Pete Black, Moud Gazaway, Bill Block, Larry Watson, Mike Todd, Mike Roleson, Francis Bland, Jerry Jetton, and Gary Caudle.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or the City Beautiful Commission of Paragould and First United Methodist Church of Paragould.

Estalee M. Straub

Estalee M. Straub, 85, of Paragould, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

She was born March 10, 1919, in Cash. She was a homemaker and worked at Highland Pastry Shop for many years. She was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Straub; her parents, William Edwin and Mary Schaller Liddell; one brother, Hall Liddell; and one sister, Ruth Pigue.

Survivors include five sons, Connie Ray Straub, Joseph Straub and Michael Straub, all of Paragould, Loren Dean Straub of South Haven, Miss. and Jerry Stairs of Tennessee; one sister, Beulah Ward of Peach Orchard; eight grandchildren, Ed Straub, Robert Straub, Anthony Straub, Kenneth Straub, Michael Straub, Timothy Straub, Sherrie Gramling and Rebecca Straub Kendall; 15 great-grandchildren, Sean, Krystal, Micha, Melvin, Blake, Hailey, Mallory, Erin, Marissa, Jennifer, Harrison, Hayden, David, Ryan, and Tessa; and three great-great-grandchildren, Jasime, Joey and Jeremy.

Graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will officiate the service. Her grandsons will be pallbearers. No visitation has been scheduled. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

 

 

Jeanie Lenora Austin

Jeanie Lenora Austin, 84, of Paragould, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

She was born April 19, 1920, in Paragould. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lillie Downs; one daughter, Barbara Smith; one brother, Elmer Downs; two sisters, Zelma Beck and Wilma Adams; two grandchildren, Jimmy Windland and Lisa Freeman; and one great-granddaughter, Windy Eaton.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Austin of Indianapolis, Ind., and Billy Don Austin of Fayetteville; four daughters, Sandra Teel of Houston, Texas, Marla Utley of Jonesboro, and Beverly Douglas and Pat Austin, both of Paragould; two nieces, Pat Gorski of Lansing, Mich., and Lyn Schranz of Collierville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Paragould with Larry McFadden officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.

Pallbearers are Justin Austin, Ron Eaton, Scotty Smith, Dillon Whitworth, Robby Schorer and Billy Don Austin.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Chester Alton Ellington

Chester Alton Ellington, 81, of St. Louis, Mo., died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born April 5, 1923, in Greene County. He was a retired chemical technician with United Technologies in St. Louis and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wava Herren Ellington; his parents, Chester and Susie Wolverton Ellington; and one brother, Cotton Ellington.

Survivors include one son, Allen Ellington of Collinsville, Ill.; three daughters, Lola Murray and Rhudonna Matthes, both of St. Louis, and Neva Pagetta Thiessen of Sullivan, Mo.; one brother, Gordon Ellington of Paragould; one sister, Alma Jean Perry of St. Louis; four grandchildren, Cora, Carissa, Adam and Michael; and three great-grandchildren, Brenden, Kiersten and Brady.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Heath Colonial Chapel in Paragould with Adrian Denham officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, RFD, Paragould, under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

Pallbearers are Curt Ellington, Dennis Ellington, Danny Ellington, Chris Ellington, Michael Matthes and Adam Ellington.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. 

 

Tony Pankey

Tony Pankey, 64, of Paragould, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at his home.

He was born Nov. 18, 1939, in Paragould. He was retired from Emerson Electric.

He was preceded in death by his parents, F.M. And Alice Pankey.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Mario Pankey of Paragould and Anthony and Robin Pankey of Douglasville, Ga.; one daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Mike Vowell of Rector; two brothers, L.C. Pankey of Flint, Mich., and Johnny Pankey of Jonesboro; two sisters, Quara Vowan of Memphis, Tenn., and Faye Davidson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and four grandchildren, James Pankey, Jennifer Pankey, Laura Pankey and Matthew Vowell.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Paragould with the Rev. Royce Boling officiating.

Pallbearers are Bobby Drope, Charlie Murray, Mike Boyd, Ray Murray, Jeff Hooks, Scotty Kidd and Craig Boozer.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sharon Ann Rutledge

Sharon Ann Rutledge, 63, of Marmaduke, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at her home.

She was born March 1, 1941, in Columbus, Ohio. She was a retired factory worker for Emerson Electric and a member of Marmaduke First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Charlotte Graves Carroll.

Survivors include her husband, Gail Rutledge of Marmaduke; two sons, David Rutledge of Licking, Mo., and Eric Brown of Marmaduke; two daughters, Becky (Rutledge) Shewmaker of Benton and Debbie (Rutledge) Bearden of Rector; one sister, Brenda Nelson of Marmaduke; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Marmaduke First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kim Bridges and Ben Whitaker officiating. Burial will be in Hartsoe Cemetery in Marmaduke under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Paragould.

Pallbearers are Shane Robinson, Shannon McDowell, Shawn McDowell, Shane Jordan, Andrew Dodd, Ronnie Coward and David Fultz.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at Marmaduke First Baptist Church.

Verna Williams

Verna Williams, 86, of Wynne, formerly of Marmaduke, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at Wynwood Nursing Center in Wynne.

She was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Greene County. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Marmaduke.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Sylvia Vestal; and one son, Vesta Gene Williams.

Survivors include her husband, Odis Williams of Wynne; two sons, Earl Dean Williams and Ronnie Lee Williams, both of Widener; one sister, Elsie Brightwell of Paragould; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Marmaduke with Kim Bridges officiating. Burial will be in Harvey's Chapel Cemetery in Marmaduke under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.

Pallbearers are Bryan Exum, Jim Hitchcock, Bruce Smith, Riley Hitchcock, Ethen Williams, Grant Williams and Grayson Exum.
