Minnie Blackford Jones

Minnie Blackford Jones passed away on April 19, 2010. She was born on July 27, 1930, in Paragould, Arkansas to Nora Bierbaum Blackford and Robert Ralph Blackford. She was preceded in death by her second mom, grandmother and namesake, Minnie Louise Bierbaum, her parents, her husband Norton, and her beloved granddaughter Melissa Kellett.
Missing her greatly are her baby brother, Robert (Joyce) Blackford and her five “Chickadees” and their husbands whom she considered sons, Marjorie (Sonny) Lingenfelter, Vicki (Jack) Selby, Barbara (Aaron) McGuire, Patricia (Milburn) Golden, and Shirley (Greg) Jones. She is also survived by her “baby-dolls,” her eight grandchildren, Mitchael, Missty, Randy, Joshua, Shaunna, Lisa, Rachel and Alexander, and nine great grandchildren all of whom loved and were fascinated by their Grandma Minnie.
Although retired from the staff of St. Bernard's Medical Center, of which she was very proud, Minnie was an artist at heart. In her senior wish list in 1948, Minnie listed a “complete” art set, never having owned more than a few pencils, pastels and paints at a time. Minnie went on to Memphis State College to begin a major in art. Although tough times and becoming a newlywed kept her from completing her degree, she continued to paint, draw and create her entire life.

Minnie considered her most important role as that of raising her five chickadees. She instilled in them love of art, poetry and education. Minnie was inventive, imaginative, and fun. Friends loved it when she was homeroom mother at Brookland because she transformed cookies and cupcakes into works of art. During thunderstorms, to calm her children, she would recite and dramatize their favorite poem, “The Tale of Custard the Dragon” in her lyrical voice. Her children and grandchildren would beg her to recite this poem and “Annabelle Lee” because of the drama and beautiful reading. She could recite every Ogden Nash limerick by heart and had an amazing recall of history and could outdo just about anyone in her knowledge of current events. She would entertain her children by singing and making her kids groan. She could not carry a tune no matter how hard she tried. She spent many summer days sitting on a bench in the hot sun at Walcott so that her girls could go swimming.

Minnie took on her toughest but most rewarding job, without warning or preparation, when she lost Norton in 1968 and was left with five frightened little girls, no job or marketable skills and farm and cattle debt. Times were tough, but with little help, she found jobs, kept the family farm, raised her daughters, and attended their school events and ballgames. She did without so that they could have pleasure reading books, clothes, hot rollers and make-up. She even managed to bring her daughters food when they had their own little ones and no money so that they did not have to go without.

In her later years, Grandma Minnie loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They knew her to be extremely knowledgeable on almost all subjects and if someone wanted to know something, they looked to Grandma Minnie for the answer. She loved to paint with her daughter Patti. She also enjoyed watching tennis, the Cards, Razorbacks, American Idol and puzzles and word searches. She would call her family to let them know her beloved Cards or the Razorbacks were playing. In fact, three days before her death though racked with pain, she reported that Feliepe Lopez had hit a grand slam bringing her Cards ahead of the Mets. Minnie loved flowers and surrounded her children with an array of beautiful flowers that she grew, many from seed at the family’s home place. She was happiest sitting in her chair surrounded by her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids with everyone talking simultaneously.

Special thanks is given to her “second daughter” Delaine and to Margie for being there so many times when we other sisters could not. A void exists in our hearts but we know that she is pain free and is in her “kingdom by the sea.”

Visitation will be Thursday, April 22nd, 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home in Paragould. Funeral services will be on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel. Minnie’s service will be officiated by her grandson, Bro. Randy Lingenfelter. Burial will follow at Brown’s Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the home of Marjorie Lingenfelter.
