Wilburn Jackson Heath

Wilburn Jackson Heath, veteran of two foreign wars and long time citizen of West Memphis, Arkansas, passed into the arms of his Lord on January 14, 2013 at Crittenden Regional Hospital, surrounded by his wife and family.
Born September 3, 1925 in Walcott, Jack grew up in Greene County and graduated from the Bobo School. He worked on the family farm until 1941 when he enlisted in the Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Jack was among those now regarded as the “Greatest Generation.” He served as a Radioman First Class on a Landing Craft during the Normandy Invasion. Against the shattering backdrop of D-Day, Jack was commended as “one of the fastest, most accurate Morse Code operators in the U.S. Navy.” In the Korean conflict he was stationed aboard the USS Kermit Roosevelt and played a key role in the evacuation of UN Forces from Hungnam, North Korea. Jack and his shipmates later received a Presidential Commendation for their “brave and effective operation in saving our men on [that] isolated beachhead.”
Following his military service, Jack returned home to marry Glida Parson of Jonesboro. Together, they raised four children of whom he was enormously proud: Kay Heath, Garry Heath, Debbie Heath, and Dawn Heath Thomas.
In 1955, he joined the Army Corp of Engineers, using his expertise as a radio operator to help barges, steamboats and other vessels on the Mississippi navigate the hazardous waters around Memphis. After 25 years of civil service, Jack retired from the Corp as its Chief of Administrative Services.

Jack Heath dedicated his entire life to serving God through music. He grew up singing in his family’s ready-made choir of nine siblings, and was a celebrated soloist in his own right. Well known for a crystal-pure tenor, he routinely performed at various events throughout the region. A master of stringed instruments, he also taught guitar to a host of aspiring musicians at the Central Academy of Music in Memphis, and Cordell’s Music Center in West Memphis. As a long standing Deacon in the Baptist faith, Jack became Choir Director for Hulbert Baptist Church, a role he would later serve at Crawfordsville First Baptist and Richland Baptist, always encouraging choir and congregation alike to “make a joyful noise.” He ended his lifelong devotion to the church as a member of Cornerstone Baptist in West Memphis.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents A.C. and Nellie Mae, brother, Willie, sisters Ruby Bottoms, Sue Smith and Eva Matlock, and two devoted “grand-dogs” G.W. and Murphy.

He is survived by his wife Glida and four children, five grandchildren (Evan, Regan, Kathryn, David and James), five siblings (Amy, Bette, Janie, Linda and Boyd), six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended relatives too numerous to name.
It was often said of Jack Heath that he never met a stranger, and there was nowhere he could travel without encountering someone he knew. After his valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease and congenital heart failure, the void his passing brings will surely be filled by the profound legacy of love, devotion and music he leaves to all those whose lives he touched.

Visitation for Jack Heath will be held Wednesday evening, January 16th, 6:00 until 8:00 at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home, 201 N. Pine Street in West Memphis.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 17th, 10:00 a.m. at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home with burial at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Walcott, Arkansas at 2:00 p.m.

Contributions to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or Cornerstone Baptist in West Memphis are appreciated by the Heath family.

Following the burial the family will receive friends at Family Fellowship Baptist Church, 2441 Old Greensboro Rd., Jonesboro, Arkansas 72401
