Dr. John W. Hollis

Capt. John William “Bill” Hollis, M.D., passed away Monday, Oct. 20 following a short illness. He was 78 years old.

Dr. Hollis was born Aug. 16, 1930, in Paragould, the son of Judge Royal and Vivian Hollis. As a young adventurer at heart, he would listen and broadcast from his short-wave radio to places far away and exotic. He made the decision early on to be a world traveler and adventurer and did fulfill that dream. Bill graduated from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1956 and enlisted in the United States Air Force shortly thereafter, where he served as a captain and flight surgeon. He was stationed in various places around the world, including Wheelus Air Force Base in Tripoli, Libya, Germany and France. While in Libya, he met his wife-to-be, Capt. Dorothy Irene Giguere, RN. They were married July 15, 1958, and together had a daughter and a son. Dorothy preceded Bill in death April 30, 1996.

After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Dr. Hollis started his own private practice in Mobile, Ala., with fellow physician and uncle, Royce Hollis. After completing certification as an industrial medical specialist, Dr. Hollis moved his family to Flint, Mich., where he became the medical director for Fisher Body Plant No. 1. In 1971, he moved to Ashland, Ky., where he became the corporate medical director for Ashland Oil Inc. Throughout his career, he was deeply involved with OSHA, ensuring compliance and safety of health care legislation. During the 1980s through 2000, he also served as an FAA-certified crash site medical examiner and expert witness. For hobbies, he earned his private pilot license and enjoyed several years of flying single-engine airplanes or taking motorcycle rides to explore backcountry roads and trails. He also had a passion for RV travel and particularly liked to “hit the road” and travel through Alaska. After he went into semi-retirement and moved to Neptune Beach, Fla., he worked part-time as a physician for the U.S. Post Office in Jacksonville. He fully retired in 2000.

Bill, as everyone called him, was a happy and content man who was loved and adored by many. People in the neighborhood referred to him as “The Ambassador of Oceanwalk.” He always had a smile and a hello and was never too rushed to share time with friends and family. Bill was not only a physician, he was a scholar who loved knowledge and learning and conversation about almost any subject. Bill shared a home with his daughter Nanci, son-in-law Ricardo, grandchildren Heather and Ricky and his three adored dogs: Felecia Irene, Benjamin and Buddy. He was an advocate for animal rights and had a passion for protecting and preventing mistreatment of animals.

Dr. Hollis is survived by his daughter, Nanci I. Perez; his son, John P. Hollis; and his grandchildren, Heather and Ricky Perez and Johnny Hollis. He will also be sorely missed by his daughter-in-law, Susanne I. Hollis; his son-in-law, Ricardo E. Perez; and the many people who knew him, either as a friend or simply as the cheerful, outgoing gentleman who could often be seen walking his beloved dogs around the neighborhood.

A graveside service will be at noon Friday, Oct. 24 at Evergreen Cemetery, 4535 N. Main St., Jacksonville, Fla. A reception will be at the home he shared with Nanci and Ricardo following the service.

Donations may be made to a charity of your choice in memory of John W. Hollis, M.D.
