Interested in learning about Miss Jean LASETER of Hope, Hempstead Co., AR. The only things I know of her are (1) that she was a family friend of Dr. & Mrs. G. E. CANNON, also of Hope, AR; (2) that she was a water color artist (I have two of her paintings, dated 1912, both of river bank settings) and (3) in the Foreword of his book "Nights with Christ" published in 1947 my grandfather, Dr. G. E. Cannon, expressed thanks to several that had encouraged and helped in this endeavor, one being Miss Jean Laseter. Thank you for any information that you might share. Jodie Wyatt

I am seeking to make contact with members of the JONES, COX, BURNS and POWELL families of Hempstead County. During the 1800's, these families intermarried quite extensively. Around 1898 to 1900, members of these families left Arkansas for Shelby County, Texas where they were very prolific, as in Arkansas. Many members of these families are buried in graveyards in and around Hope...Central and New Hope are two cemeteries I will mention. I would like to get in touch with the descendants of those who were left behind, to exchange information and establish old/new family ties. monroemusic@msn.com.

My late grandmother, Dorothy (BURKE) DODGE, was the daughter of William Burke and Maud (GRADY) Burke. While my grandmother's marriage certificate lists William and Maud as being from Canada, a thorough search indicates that one of the few listings for a William and Maud Burke is in Hempstead County, Arkansas. Specifically, I located a William Burke (1875-1967) and a Maud Burke (1878-1962). Since my grandmother was born in 1901, there is a remote possibility that William and Maud may have been her parents. Since my grandmother was given up for adoption in New York by the Burkes, it is entirely possible that they ended up in Arkansas. Any information on the Burkes of Hempstead County would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Seek descendants of the WOMACK families who came from Bedford Co. TN. and settled in Pike and Hempstead counties. Two separape wagon trains came to AR at two separate times. The first ca 1849 and named Nashville, AR. David Womack is supposed to have married his first cousin Eliazabeth Womack. Known children--Charles, Andrew Jackson, William R. and Alexander. There were supposed to be 2 or 3 girls, but have no names. Found Eliazabeth and the boys in the Scott Co. AR census in 1860. Why weren't they with the rest of the family? Many of the allied families moved to Stephenville, TX. and some Womack moved to Quanah, TX. Eleanor Edmondson, 2803 Byron Ave, Odessa, TX 79762

I have been told that on the 1860 census, you can find William (but listed as John) MERRILL, age 68 bn in NC, wife Telitha, age 42 bn in NC, children Elian 7, bn in LA, Richmond, age 5, bn in AR, and 2 step-children with the last name of FARRAR. Does anyone know any more about this family? They had moved sometime after 1853 from Union Parish, LA (where they married in 1851). This name may have morphed into MURRELL, or MERRELL. I am also looking for William's daughter, Nancy Caroline Merrill, who had married in 1845 in Shelby Co., AL, is found in 1850 in Union Parish, LA with her husband, William LINDSEY. This name may have morphed into LINZY or LINDSAY. They had a son named James, b. 1847 in AL. Another daughter of William Merrill is Judith, who m. Robert T. PARISH in 1850, in Union Parish, LA. Another daughter of William Merrill, was Lucinda, b. 1830, who m. Charles Lindsey in Shelby Co., AL in 1846. We haven't found this family in 1850 (though I believe they were somewhere in LA). By 1860, they were in Pike Co, AR (on the census, listed as Lindsley). Charles died in 1865, but Lucinda and quite a few of her children stayed in Pike Co, for decades. That named did morph into Linzy. I believe that Charles Lindsey and William Lindsey were probably brothers, but that has not been proven. Does anyone know anything about any of these folks? Does anyone know if the 1860 census of Hempstead Co is on-line? Thanks! Barbara Craddock Pike

I am researching on my 3rd gr grandfather, Harmon HENSLEY, who, I understand, came to Hempstead Co. AR ca 1824 with his family. His wife's name was Betsey, his children were, Johnson, William, James, John, Charles, Andrew Jackson, Sarah, Margaret, Mary. His son Johnson bought an interest in the John Dilard still house in Washington, Hempstead Co. This info is taken from a letter written by one of his sons, to a niece 12-14-1910.it is our understanding that the family left the area in may of 1828 and joined Austin's Colony in Texas. We have not been able to trace Harmon except for a brief time in Sumner Co. TN. Nothing regarding where he came from to there, or where he was before he ended up in Brenham, TX. Sincerely, Mavis Hensley Sager
