Izard County, Arkansas

We will no longer be accepting queries on this site. We suggest that you post your queries to either the Izard County Forum on Rootsweb or to Izard County Mail List on Rootsweb. Queries posted on the forum are also posted to the e-mail list automatically. You are far more likely to receive assistance from these two sources than posting here. The old queries below will remain here as an archive. There are no dates on most so there's no way of judging when they were posted. Experience tells me that most of the e-mail links below will no longer work. It seems that after about a year people tend to change their address's and not update their information. I would suggest that you give the address a try but don't be surprised if the message bounces back as undeliverable.

CHURCHILL, COPELAND
Name: Barbara Jean Copeland Aldridge,  aldridge73s@sprintmail.com
3000 Magnolia Lane
Bedford,  TX  76021
Query: CHURCHILL-Looking for info on when and by what route the Churchills came to Izard county. In the 1850 census, there are only two CHURCHILL families: one (Richwoods twp)is the family of Joseph D, 53, and Lucretia, 47, with children John S., 21, James J., 20, Levina, 17, Jane 14, Lucy, 12, Wiliam 10, Dempsey W., 8, Joseph A, 4. The children were born in AR; Joseph was born in New Jersey and Lucretia in VA. Joseph and Lucretia's eldest son, John, appears in the 1860 with his wife Susan J. (b. in IL) and children George and Charity (both 6), Sarah E, 4, and Louiza, 1 in Union twp, Benbrook Mills. This family was not found in the 1870 census. Since John S. Churchill was born in AR in about 1829, this would indicate that Joseph Churchill came from NJ prior to 1829. Louiza (or Luiza) Churchill, John and Susan's youngest, married Marcus Dee Lafayette COPELAND about 1873-77. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with CHURCHILL info that may relate to my kin.   03/11/98

I know nothing of my great-grandfather's lineage or his family. My Aunt Bera who now resides in Georgia said that James Barthelmew's family originated from Scotland. Rt. 1, 158b
Minco,  OK  73059
Query:  Janet Mitchum is a descendent of Jesse Ball of Izard county. We believe he is the Jesse Ball referenced in The Izard County Historian, Vol. 18, No. 1, Jan. 1987 page 21. We also found him in the 1870 census, page 246b, line 29. Specifically looking for records regarding his son Franklin, referenced on line 31. In 1870, he was 21 years old and supposedly was married soon after. We are trying to find out the name of his wife, when married, etc. The only record we have of him is the 1870 census and family recollections. Those recollections say that Franklin ran a ferry up and down the White river. Any help you could give us on finding records and information about this part of the family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 03/10/98

Pine Grove,  CA 95665
We are seeking any information on the mystery man of my family, my paternal Grandfather, Calvin Frank WEBBER, born 21 March, 1844 in WASHINGTON, Arkansas. We don't know which of the Washingtons in Arkansas that is; the County of that name, one of the two Towns or of the thirteen Townships in the state. Then there are parent counties. At any rate I do know from the family bible that his mother's given name was Nancy and that on the 16th of August, 1876 he married Matilda Frances (Fannie) OWENS in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. She was born 9 Feb, 1859 in Mena delivered most of the nine children she bore to Frank in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas, died 9 Apr, 1912 back in Mena and was buried in the same Owens Chapel Cemetery outside Mena, where Frank was buried after his death 16 Aug, 1900. We know a good deal about most of their descendants, but nothing more of Grand-dad. If you could enlighten us on any point concerning this mystery man, the entire WEBBER family will be eternally grateful, and I thank you.

JENNINGS
Janice Roper [ "Crystal R. Brazzel" jcarey@texhoma.net ]
Rt 3, Box C18
Comanche Ok 73529
Recently I had access to the Izard County Cemetery Records. I found many Jennings, but not ROBERT LEE JENNINGS. A relative told me they found his grave, near a church of unknown denomination, across the hwy (or they turned across from Zion) from the community of Zion. (I have never been to the area, so am ignorant of which I speak.) Is there an old Zion Cemetery? I am thinking perhaps it was an older publication, not your new updated one, that I had access to. Do you have any cemetery records for a Robert Jennings? I do not have dates for him, but I know his son, (my g-grandfather) William Philetus Jennings was born 1877, supposedly at Zion. Robert Lee Jennings and his wife Eliza Roeanna Gray Jennings died relatively young. Some of their children lived with an "Uncle Dick" Jennings. I have no verification that the family was still in Izard County at this time. Thank you for any information. Please let me know of any fees involved. I am planning to visit the area this summer, and wish to visit their graves if at all possible.   Thank you. 4/15/98

I have successfully found him in the 1910 census records of Rector, Oak Bluff Twp., Clay Co., AR. then in 1920 he was living in Marianne, Independence Twp., Lee Co., AR. Unfortunately, I have no information where he might be buried - am hoping his obituary, if found, might reveal that information. He came from the pioneering family of Robert F. & Emily J. (Cline) Hughey of Wayne Co., MO. I suspect he may have been returned to his homeland. His wife was named either Carrie or Mary (census records were difficult to read) [married about Oct 1909] & I noticed they had no children at the time. However, if he indeed died in 1922, his surviving siblings would have been: Everett W., Oscar A., John F., Benjamin, & possibly Otha L., & a sister Effie G. [have no record of the latter 2 siblings death dates]. He was preceded in death by his father Robert F. (1888) & mother Emily J. (1897), a sisters Zilpha (1897). Cora B (1927) & brothers Clinton O. (1908) & Robert I. Hughey 1925 (these names might be mentioned in the obit). As you can see, he came from a large family of 11 children! Oral history has that he died of Bright's disease. If my calculations are correct he died at about age 43. I believe was undoubtedly a physician 20+ years.
