GABRIEL RITCHIE

Gabriel (Hawkeye) Ritchie was the son of Isom Ritchie & Martha Patrick, grandson of Alexander Crocket Ritchie & Susan Elizabeth
Grigsby. He was born 1838 in Perry Co, Ky, he died July 16^th, in Madison County, Arkansas. He is found on the 1850 Perry County Census, age 13. His father and mother moved to Arkansas sometime after 1850, so he was a young boy when the family travelled to Arkansas, with his family. Also several Uncles and Aunts and cousins all moved to Arkansas after 1850.

Gabriel's daughter, Martha Patsy Jane Ritchie (she died in 1973) remembered her father Gabriel ( Hawkeye ) Ritchie telling her about his brother EPHRAIM RITCHIE, it was when they were moving from Kentucky to Arkansas, apparently he fell from a barge into the Mississippi and drown, his body was never found.

Gabriel enlisted Nov 12, 1862 in the Union Army, 1st Arkansas Cavalry. He homesteaded 160 acres in Madison County, Arkansas. May 10^th, 1882. Homestead Certificate #2344.

Gabriel Ritchie is buried in the Dutton Cemetery in Madison County, Arkansas.

He served on the Liberty Dis #82, Madison County Schoolboard.

He is listed on the 1860 Mooney Township Census, ,Madison Co, Ar. #740.

He is listed on the 1870 Hilburn Township Census, Madison Co, Ar

November 1897, Bethlehem Primitive Baptist church, received brother Hawkeye Ritchie by experience to be baptized at our next meeting, October 1898. By motion and second, the church excluded brother Hawkeye Ritchie for failing to be baptized, done by order of the church, Madison Co, Arkansas.

Gabriel Ritchie first married Maggie Caroline Dearmore, born 1845 in Tennesse, they married January 13^th, 1861 in Franklin Co, Arkansas, she was the daughter of Bryant Dearmore and Sara W Slayton, they were married by W D, Abernathy. Gabriel (Haweye) Ritchie married a second time to Mary (Polly) Prater, born 1851 in Arkansas

*Maggie Caroline Dearmore was the sister of Amanda Dearmore who married Henry Crocket Ritchie, the brother of
Gabriel Ritchie. Two Ritchie men married two Dearmore sisters.
