UPTON FAMILY
Submitted by: Susan Fahnstrom

Joseph Upton Jr 1819 - 1898 was the responsible older brother when he got to Madison County, AR about 1837. I don't know why this Upton family was so closely connected to the people from Tennesse who migrated to Madison County, AR, could it be that Gentie belonged to one of these interrelated families, too, but they became more connected. we have no proof yet that Gentie Upton's maiden name was Tucker, but her first born son's middle name was Tucker, Isaiah Tucker, sometimes mothers would name their sons with their maiden name as the sons middle name.

Joseph jr married Mary "Polly" Adams (d/o Solomon Adams and Levica Elhaney)

Joseph Upton Jr was born 14 Oct 1819, Lawrence County, Ar. He d, 7 Oct 1898, Madison County, Mary was b, 17 Feb 1823 in Kentucky or Tennesse, she died April 20, 1898. Both are buried in Aurora Cemetery, Madion County, Arkansas.

From the Springdale News 10/28/98 - UPTON Joseph - Uncle Joseph Upton, one of the oldest citizen of Madison County, died recently at his home near Aurora. He was 79 years of age he'd been a resident of Madison County. The remains were interred in Bowen Cemetery (now called Aurora Cemetery).

You will find Joseph Jr and Mary in the 1840 census of Madison county as newly weds. In the 1850 they are in Houston, Co, Texas next door to Mary;s father Solomon Adams. They are in Madison county Ar, again 1860, 1870, and 1880. During the civil war period Laural Posey (a preacher in the Church of Christ, he married one of the Upton daughters) Laurel quoted Mary "Polly" ADams.

Joseph was in Fayetteville Springdale, Mo Fairplay, Mo, after the war they returned to Madison County, Arkansas and lived 6 miles south of Huntsville, near Aurora.

Joseph and Mary Upton's son William B Upton who married Sarah Bell is only 2 years younger than his cousin William B Upton the son of John Wesley Upton, both Williams were in Madison County Ar, in 1870, then John Wesleys son William went to Logan Co, Ar, and eventually to Muskogee, Ok, to live, Joseph's son William went to Texas, then to Pottawatamie County, Ok.
