Madison County Biography of:

"Francis M. ANDERSON was born in Madison County, February 12 1842, where he has since lived engaged in farming and stock raising. He began life with no property of his own, but by determined effort is now the owner of 457 acres of land, well improved.

In June, 1861 he enlisted in Captain BOON'S Company I, Sixteenth Arkansas Infantry, Confederate Army, and participated in a number of important engagements, among which may be mentioned Pea Ridge, Farmington, Iuka and Corinth. Later he was wounded by a bursting shell, taken prisoner and held a short time. After his release he served in several skirmishes, and in 1863 was taken prisoner while on a visit home, but made his escape from the enemy while en route for Springfield.

After the war he resumed his farm duties, and October 6, 1867, married Nancy STEWART, daughter of James STEWART. Mrs. ANDERSON was born in this county, and is the mother of the following children: William R. L., John W., David W., Robert T., Thomas G. and James. Mr. ANDERSON is a leading man in his township, a member of the Masonic fraternity, and himself and wife belong to the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics he is a democrat." Francis Marion ANDERSON, a.k.a. Marion HUNT, was the son of Henderson HUNT, born Virginia and Cynthia Jane ANDERSON, who was born 26 Jan 1822, in Tennessee, the daughter of James ANDERSON, who died abt Jan 1842 in Washington County, AR.

Henderson HUNT died in January 1849 in Washington Co., AR. after a two week illness. He can be found listed in the 1850 Washington County Mortality schedule. Cynthia Jane verifies that she is HUNT'S widow 13 October 1869 according to the Washington County Probate Court.

By 1850, Cynthia Jane had remarried to George Washington BURKETT, born ca 1816, Tennessee, his second wife. George Washington and Cynthia Jane ANDERSON Burkett appear with his three children from his earlier marriage -- Mary, Martha and William -- and her son, listed as "Marion HUNT," in the 1850 Madison County, AR Census, Hilburn Twp. HH#203.

Cynthia Jane ANDERSON died 6 Mar 1877, and is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Crosses, Madison County, Arkansas. After Cynthia Jane died, George BURKETT married Louisa KIRKPATRICK BLEVINS. It is not known where Marion's father, Henderson HUNT, or his parents are buried.

Marion enlisted in the Confederate army using his stepfather's name. After his mother died he adopted her maiden name. Marion ANDERSON died 10 January 1929 at his son Tom's home, in Crosses, Madison County. (Book B. Probate Court Records Washington County, Arkansas, page 195)

Nancy STEWART was the daughter of James Doss and Frances "Frankie" MONTGOMERY Stewart, who are listed in the 1850 Madison Co., AR Census in Hilburn Twp. HH#177. James Doss STEWART was born 1 Feb 1814 in Missouri, died 4 Jul 1880 in Madison County, the son of James and Susannah _____ Stewart. Frankie MONTGOMERY was born 26 Sep 1818 in Kentucky, died 17 Mar 1896 in Madison County, the daughter of Joseph Johnson and Matilda HOWARD Montgomery. Nancy STEWART died 12 August 1921, in Crosses, Madison County. Nancy STEWART Anderson is also buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery near Crosses.
