Relocated Cemeteries of

The Bull Shoals Reservoir Project

By Linda Haas Davenport

When Bull Shoals Reservoir was built in 1948-1950 the Corp of Engineers surveyed each cemetery that was found in the area where the new lake would be. They made a map of the existing cemetery, numbered each grave found and if there was an existing tombstone listed the name found on the tombstone. A decision was then made as to where to re-intern the bodies. Either they were moved to an existing cemetery or a new cemetery was built. A map of the new (or existing) cemetery was made and as each body was re-interned the grave was assigned a number. If there was an existing tombstone it was moved with the body. The end result of the movement of all of these cemeteries is 91 pages of maps and lists of names.

There is no possible way I can put all of these maps on the web site, they are simply too big. However, if you find an ancestor on any of the lists I have transcribed I will send you copies of the two maps - the cemetery being moved and the cemetery they were re-buried in. E-mail me with your request.

Apr 1, 1999: I received an e-mail asking me what possible use this information is since it doesn't contain any birth or death information? I think it's invaluable! If you can locate the place your ancestors lived then it is very likely that they were buried close to their home. Look in the cemetery that was found in the same area for your dead ancestors. If you find them on one of these lists then that means that there was a headstone and the lists will tell you were to find their graves today.

Do Not ASSUME that your ancestor will be found only in a family cemetery bearing their surname. For example in the Parker Cemetery there are no Parkers, but there are several McCackens. So take the time to search EACH cemetery. Good Luck !
