Byline: Ned Phillips: During the last few months I have been questioned by people about some of the old timers, particularly the early basketball teams. One young man by the name of Sammy Henry had a relative on an early girl team, so when some other folks got in on the discussion I decided to try to put a bit of an early type group for the benefit of folks who didn't know or had forgotten.
The team we have listed here was the 1928-1929 girls team, and was frequently a championship group. Every thing was new - the gymnasium, the first year for the new school house and the girls found it pretty different to playing under shade trees as they had been doing. The man standing behind the group was G.B. Keeter, who was the coach, and who also was school principal and taught history and math in the high school.
The girls are listed here from the top and from the left - Inez Henry, forward; Pauline Marshall, guard; Mary Linck, guard; esther Mears, guard and Eula Keeter, side center.
Front row, left to right - Zena Huddleston, forward; Elsie McCracken, guard and Artha Barnett, jump center.
This group of girls had played together for some time and were quite adept at playing together. During the school year, the center, Artha Barnett died, which was quite a blow to the group. There are only two left of the original - Pauline (Marshall) Porter and Mary (Linck) Martin. We lost a Zena (Huddleston) Milum just a few months ago. The young man who started this story is the nephew of Inez Henry.
