Index to Marriage Book-E

Wedding Rings

Transcribed by Linda Haas Davenport

In August of 1887 the Yellville courthouse burned with no records saved. This is the first marriage book after the fire. If you are looking for a marriage prior to Aug/Sep 1887 you should check Marriages (from the main page). The Marriage file contains the marriage records that have been abstracted from the Mt. Echo Newspaper (1st issue Mar 1886), marriages found in the diary of Rev Wood and marriages that have been submitted by researchers. If you have an early marriage for Marion Co please be kind and send me the information to add to this file.

On the Resource (Books for sale by author) page there are books of Abstracted Marriages from 1888-1915 offered for sale. These books were compiled from indexes, the actual copies of the licenses and other types of microfilmed records. The authors say there are a few marriages they found in the original records that are not included in this Index.

The License itself is a one page document with the top half being the "License" and the bottom half being the "Marriage" information. The top half was filled out prior to the marriage and the minister or Justice of the Peace was suppose to return the information for the bottom half after the marriage. Not all of the license have the bottom half completed, which is not unusual since many times the minister or JP just didn't get "around to it". Don't assume your folks were NOT married if the bottom half of the license is blank. The License does not contain any information of parents, birthplaces, etc. It only contains the names of the Bridge and Groom, their residence (township) and their ages.

You can order a copy of the these Marriage License from the Courthouse -See Order a Marriage License

While I was at the Yellville courthouse I xeroxed this index and the copy is pretty bad. I have tried to transcribe the name exactly as it appears even if I think the name cannot possibly be correct - so, if you know what the correct names are please be kind and send me the information. Thanks a million

Karen
