Roll Call - A note from the listowner
Mary & Kevin Feige  5/10/1999, 6:50:02 PM
I don't typically start roll calls, but since this list is so new and there are now about 28 subscribers, it might be a good place to start. A roll call is simply an email sent to the list ARMONTGO-L(a)rootsweb.com stating whom, where, and when you are researching. Be sure to put "ROLL CALL" in the subject line, along with the surnames.
Thanks -
Mary

McCullar 4/28/1999
by Rick, Carla & Kyra Brigance
John F. McCullar first married Susan Angeline Amerson in 1873. He then married her sister, Sarah Jane Amerson in 1877. Sarah had been previously married to Hughlet M. Baker. The 1880 Montgomery County census lists Sarah as a widow and residing with her were her children: Jasper Baker, James J. Baker, William W. Baker, Josephine Baker, and Marcus McCullar. In the 1900 Montgomery County census, Sarah is listed with her husband, John F. McCullar and son, John P. McCullar.

I presume the listing of Sarah as a widow was a mistake on the 1880 census, since her husband John F. shows up on the 1900 census. Does anyone know what happened to Marcus McCullar born 1879? He is not listed on the 1900 census, nor have I found a marriage record for him. Did he die or possibly move?
Thanks to anyone who might could help.
Carla

Nancy Jane SUMMIT was born in 1870 to John Francis SUMMIT and his second wife, Mary. Nancy Jane had two siblings: Henry Oliver SUMMIT born in 1878 and George Washington SUMMIT born in 1880. Nancy Jame married Greenberry "Doc" MCCULLAR on 03 Aug 1884 in Montgomery Co., AR. Two children were apparently born to Doc and Nancy Jane: Lula MCCULLAR born Nov 1885 and Lizzie MCCULLAR born Feb 1889. By Oct 1891, Doc had remarried to J.E. MOSS. By 1900, Doc and the two daughters were residing in OK. For this reason, I assume Nancy Jane must have died, or the daughters would have been with their mother instead of their father. Lula and Lizzie MCCULLAR were half sisters to my grandmother who is still living at the age of 89.
Can anyone tell me what happen to Nancy Jane? Did she die, or did Doc and Nancy Jane divorce? Any help would be appreciated.

.....one of our McConnell line was.....James Arthur McConnell is buried at Lone Star cemetery. As the story goes, he was killed near Little Rock and they brought him back to bury him in the family's lots. The south fork river (did I get that right? LOL) Anyway, the river was up and it covered the low bridge (now higher) that separated his body from Mt Ida and they buried him in Sims. Bev & Hettie 5/21/1999

RollCall - Peter Sutton 5/23/1999
Hello. I am looking for any info on Peter Sutton. He was b. in Pike Co., m. Mary Ann Martin Gwinn in 1870 in Garland Co., m. Mary Ann Posey, m. Rosella Green in 1883. I saw his name listed in a newspaper abstract for Mt. Ida in 1894, as helping provide music at a dance. Can anyone give me any info on him at all? I don't know his death date, but is said to be buried in Low(e)'s Cemetery (where is that??). He was b. ca. 1853-1856. He had a daughter, Mary Malinda Sutton Cantrell living in Mt. Ida at some point also - she died 1917 and buried in Big Fir Cemetery.
Thank you!
Carol

My grand mother was Lena May Wilson, I don't exactly where she was born in Mont. Co., but the names Caddo Gap, Mt. Ida , Norman and Glenwood were frequently mentioned. She talked
of swimming in Buttermilk Springs when she was a little girl. in 1911 she was born to Matthew C. Wilson and Bell Zora McClainMatthew died in 1917 in Mont. Co. and Bell died in 1927 in Burdette, Ark, Miss.Co.
I would like to know more about the Wilson and McClain family and our family history on my Grandmother's side. Matt's father was Job[e] Wilson, in the 1900 census his place of birth is given
as Ohio, his father's and mother's the same.
Jobe is listed in Mazarn Tws. in the 1900 census and is buried in Liberty Cemetary in Glenwood [?], Ark He was active in the Church of Christ.
He was married to Nancy Petitte in 1864 [Another line I know not  much about.] they had Jobe A., James , William , Atlas W., Matthew C., Minnie A., Ada R.

Bell Zora was born in 1887 to George M. McClain , Do not know her mothers name.
In the 1900 census they were living in Gap Tws. George's birthplace is given as Alabama, his parents as No. Carolina and So. Carolina. The children's mother bp. is listed as Alabama.
Geo. had Francis E.,Martilie, Bell Zora, Rosa L., Delton W. all born in Ark; If anyone out there can help with family history, let me know.

Roll Call: WHITEHOUSE, WILLHITE, MULLENIX, WENZIG, FRYAR
Olwyn  5/10/1999
Hi to the new list and listers,
I am researching the WILLHITE/WILHITE families from around Oden and Pine Ridge. They came to the county in 1849 in a wagon train with the Fryar's, Singleton's and Goodner's from Tippah Co. MS. "If you are related to one you are related to all" quote from Fred Standridge.

I have hit a brick wall with James (Jim) T. MULLENIX b. 1846 Alabama. Died 1912, Hog Jaw. Would like to find other descendants and who his parents were. He married Nancy Ann FRYAR b. 1848 daughter of William & Elisabeth SINGLETON FRYAR.

The Whitehouse family: Migration route. Loyalist >Nova Scotia > New Brunswick > 1867 to Maine >TX arrived in Montgomery Co. 1899 and settled in the Hurricane Grove area. Break came by finding the naturalization records at the Mt. Ida courthouse.
Gracie Lillian WHITEHOUSE and Reinhold N Jr WENZIG were married 2 Oct 1910 Montgomery Co.
Mary Elizabeth WHITEHOUSE and Dillard Haskell SHEFFIELD were married 14 Aug 1907 at Mount Ida.
Henry Lloyd WHITEHOUSE and Cordelia WILLHITE were married 16 Jan 1918 at Oden. Double wedding with her Cordelia's brother Willis to Etna Fryar.
James Wilson WHITEHOUSE and Osa Ella BEAM were married 23 Sep 1906 at Oden.

Who was Mary Ann Fryar's and John C. Goodner's parents? Which John C. Goodner is this?

Samuel M. SMITH also came from Tippah Co and married local Oden girls.

"....In 1853 he was married to Miss Melvina Goodner, a daughter of John C. Goodner, an early settler of this county. She died in October, 1862, the mother of five children, two now living: John G. (a farmer of the county), and Josiah M. (following the same occupation here). William C. (the third son, died recently in this county, leaving a widow and three children). In February, 1863, Mr. Smith married Miss Martha Deer, of this county, but she, too, passed from life, her death occurring in October, 1864, leaving a daughter, Mary J., who was the wife of Charles Laird, of this county. In October, 1865, Mr. Smith took a third wife, Miss Mary Ann Fryar, of this county, she dying in October, 1883, and leaving him with seven children to care for: Thomas O., Samuel L. Susan H., Granville W., Alfred F., Margaret A., and Elizabeth (who died in childhood). Martha A. Shirley became the wife of Mr. Smith in August in August, 1888, she being a daughter of Goyle Nobles, and widow of Jackson Shirley. She was born in Louisiana, and died January 4, 1889. Mr. Smith is a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, and politically, is a Democrat."

HUNTER NELSON FREEMAN - MANERVA THOMAS
suit 6/16/1999
Does anyone have information on Hunter Nelson Freeman. He was born ca 1874 in Alabama, died 7-14-1943 poss. Garland or Montgomery Cos. Ark. I have found him in the 1880 Blount Co. Al. Census living with Manerva Thomas, age 45, Margaret Thomas, 24, Malissa Thomas 19, H.N. Freeman 6, D.A. Freeman 4, C.W. Freeman 2. They were listed as nieces and nephew to Manerva. Hunter Nelson Freeman is buried at Howerton Cem. Montgomery Co. where Manerva Thomas 1835-1898 is also buried.

Does anyone have info on Manerva Byars Thomas. She was born in Blount Co. Al. to John Byars and Rebecca Harwood, prob. moved to Tenn. where she married Mr. Thomas. He died in the Civil War and may be J.J. Thomas who served in "1 Tenn Volunteers". A M.A. Thomas from Montgomery or Garland Cos, Ark. applied for his pension.

What information do I need, where do I find it and where do I get Civil War Pension information? M.A. Thomas living in Ark. applied for J.J. Thomas Tenn. Pension. I do not know where to go from here.

Hi, this is Shirley, editor of the Mountain Signal. I just happen to be working on a family for the August issue that connects to who you are looking for. I have not checked to see where in Louisiana the family comes from, but Martha A. Noblels first married Jackson Shirley. She was born in Louisiana and died January 4, 1889. She second became the wife of Sam Smith, August 5, 1888. You will find this information verified in the History of Arkansas, Memoirs of Western Arkansas, by Goodspeed, subject, Samuel M. Smith. For more information on the family and its connections read the August issue of The Mountain Signal. The Mountain Signal is Polk and Montgomery Counties ONLY history magazine. There is a very interesting and ironic twist to the Sam M. Smith story!!

Marriage Records 1843-1899
groom's Name page 47
Lackett, John 21 m. Nicholson, Martha C. age 18 14 Dec. 1873 Book A page 324

Should read Tackett not Lackett.

John Tackett b. Jun 27 1852 in Campbell Co. Georgia and moved to Montgomery Co. as a young man where he met his future wife Martha Christian Nickolson. She was born in Montgomery Co. AR Nov. 24. 1855. Their son George Alexander Tackett was born at Caddo Gap Sept. 20 1889. They moved to Texas with their family of eight and for a time settled in Poyner in Ellis Co. TX . Later moving to Mullin, Mills Co. TX about 1899. John became the "Watkins Man" for Mills and Mullin Co. TX.

George married Iva Mittie Marler b. Sept. 10, 1912 in Mullin. Her parents were Leona Traylor and Sam Marler. Source: Mills County History Book.

I am researching the Traylor family of Bienville Parish, LA, to Robertson Co, TX to Millis Co, to Taylor Co, to Montgomery Co. today and at least five households of descendants live in the Sims, Pencil Bluff and Oden areas.

Singleton Roots
Ronda Rowlett 9/22/1999,

I am searching for any information on my family tree. I am Ronda Singleton Rowlett; my father is Bobby Fay Singleton, his father was Fay Singleton and his father was Elbert Singleton married Emma(r) Pruitt; I believe his father to be Joseph Joa Singleton. Although Joe Singleton's headstone says died 1880, and Elbert was not born until 1883 could be a mistake on stone. Elbert has two sisters, Radie and JoEllen, any information would be helpful, their mother was Frances Ellen Fryar.
Thanks a million, Ronda.

The families covered in the August issue of The Mountain Signal are:
Charles Hiaumet (pronounced Yo-Mee) they came from Paris, France to Canada, to Vandervoort, Arkansas
Cora (Cox) and Gilbert McKinney--of Norman, Arkansas. This also covers the Samuel Mitchell Smith family from Mount Ida.
Hughes Reunion with the Edwards, Brewers, and Kisers--a lot of family history in this story
Edwards-Wehunt Feud--this is the most popular feud in Montgomery County--much like the Hatfields and McCoys--this is one version of the
events--written by Russell P. Baker of the Arkansas History Commission, and a descendant of the Edwards.
Mena's Birthday section (Mena's birthday is August 19) has many letters from old timers about their families and the area: Lewis Nichols--Henry Morrison--Minor Pipkin--Lester Sims--Effie Turner Lowther--Fred Duke (former Mena Mayor)--A.a. Perry--L.F. Martin--George F. Bickle--Louis Tomek--Joe Garland. There is a picture of Mena's first party.
Cox Family.--this is part six of the Cox's Army story and this issue covers George Washington and Nancy Jane North Cox. Their sons: Oliver, Reece, Hugh and their families--down to the present day mayor of Norman (Duane Cox)
Victor Cox is covered in this--he was a well known businessman and banker who just passed away in March--his obit is included--it is quite lengthy and covers a lot of history.
The Mountain Signal is Polk and Montgomery Counties only history magazine. It covers local and family history from both counties.

Smith-McKinney
Rick, Carla & Kyra Brigance 10/9/1999
Samuel Smith married a Malvina ? in TN abt 1853. By 1860, the family was residing in Montgomery Co., AR. Their children included: John b 1856 in TN, Josiah/Joseph b 1855 in AR, Henry b 1857 in AR, & Williamson b 1860 in AR. It appears Samuel remarried to Martha Ann Derr in 1863 in Montgomery Co., AR. Samuel and Martha's children appear to include: Mary Jane b 1864, Thomas O. b 1866, Elizabeth b 1868, Samuel L. b 1870, Susanna Hanna b 1872, Granville Whittington b 1876, Alfred Fulton b 1879, and possibly Martha Almeda b 1880.
I also have a James B. Smith md to Sarah Wilbanks. The couple supposedly moved to Montgomery Co., AR from Habersham Co., GA in 1872. The couple died soon after coming to Montgomery Co., AR. Their children included:  Margret Elizabeth who married David Louis Jackson, Charles Gilham who married Molly McKinney, Bailey, Brian, and Carried who died prior to the move to AR. James B. and Sarah apparently died soon after arriving in Montgomery Co., AR.
Does anyone know if Samuel Smith and James B. Smith were related?
Has anyone heard of a Minnie Catherine Smith, a cousin go Martha Almeda
Smith?

Wright/Robinson

Could anyone help with maybe land or court record look ups of John Harwood Wright and his sons Calvin, John D. and William. They were in Montgomery Co. in 1860 census and John D. didn't leave the are until about 1887. Would appreciate any info on these men during and after that time. I know John D. was in Civil War as a young man and he married Mary Eliz. Robinson in Cedar Glades, Montgomery Co. in 1865. She was dau. of Gibson Robinson. John D. and Mary had some children in Cedar Glades and others in Oak Bower, Garland Co.. Ark.
Someone sent excerpts from a Mont. or Garland Co. book telling of Robinson and John H. Wright and the lake now covering area and many cemetaries. And how county lines changed. But would love any info on the father, John Harwood Wright, (death, land purchases, sales) and of other sons Calvin Wright, and William Wright.
