WATKINS - WADKINS
Cathy in Oregon 1/25/2003
I am looking for info on a Hewell WATKINS or WADKINS.
He was in the 1860 Montgomery co. census as W. Wadkins. His wives name was Polly, we think possibly a nick name for Mary. But no proof as yet.

Can not find him in the 1870 census and family any where. By 1880 Polly was in Pope Co. with only 1 child left in the household. Any one have any info on this family, I would like to hear from you.
Thank You

I am searching for info on Rev. James Allen Coffman and Sarah Francis Arnold, and children.
I have them in the 1880 Montgomery Co. census. But can not find them after that.
Their children taken from the 1880 census were: William L., Sidera E., and
Julia J. I can not find the children getting married.
Any leads would sure be appreciated.

Hi to all,
I made an error in my names from the beginning... Will correct it. James A. (Allen) Coffman married Sarah Francis Arnold. Not Paralee.
Jasper (Jap) Coffman married Paralee Perkins. I am working on several Coffman's from this line and just said the wrong couples. I still need info on James A. Coffman and Sarah Francis Arnold. The J. A. Coffman at Caddo River Baptist Association, Sept. 10,1881 is probably the correct James Allen Coffman as far as I can determine.

This J.A. Coffman is listed in the June 1900 Montgomery Co. Fed. Census at Center Twp.127.06a 8-14. Is not the correct person. This one was 32 b. Sept 1867. Wife Josie, married 11 years. The James Allen Coffman, I am looking for was born abt 1852, he married in 1870. To Sarah Francis Arnold. I do not know if they both died by 1900 or moved. According to the 1880 Montgomery Co. Ar census, they had 3 children. William L. age 7, Sidera E. age 4 and Lulia J. age 3. I have not been able to identify the children in marriages nor census.
Thanks to all.

George Putman and Annie M. Coffman.
Cathy in Oregon 1/31/2003
I have been trying to find George A. Putman and Annie M. Coffman in the 1910 Montgomery Co. census. They were in Gap Twp in 1900 and Parks Twp. in 1920. I have checked several counties even, and can not find them.
Any one have this census. I would sure appreciate it you passed it my way...
Thank you
Cathy

There is a Paralee Coffman 1866-1924 at Coffman Cemetery, Montgomery Co. AR. and a Jap Coffman 1860-1935 there as well. Land for the cemetery was donated by Jim Coffman about 1885.

Re: Lanier, Pate
List user 2/11/2003
Sharon, I don't have much to contribute, but Red PATE and Martha PHILLIPS would have been my great-grandfather John Fearney PHILLIPS' sister Martha Ann PHILLIPS and her husband Zachariah PATE (Jr. I think). I don't know anything about the Pate family, although information has been put online that Zachariah was born in Alabama, date unknown. I'm glad you posted the information because I didn't have anything about Martha and Zachariah's decendents. If you don't have information about the PHILLIPS family I can help a little. Let me know if you need anything. Martha's parents were Zachariah PHILLIPS and Mary Elizabeth (Polly) Pyland.

Re: Peak Cemetery
Dickey Powell 2/20/2003
Does anyone have directions to Peak Cemetery? I believe it is just across the county line into Garland Co. Would the best way to go be south of Crystal Springs and then west? There are several of my Powell kin buried there, Joseph Powell, etc.
Thanks,

Merline & Dearl Scott 2/21/2003
My great grandfather was Andrew Jackson Scott. He married my great grandmother Martha Ann Meridith around 1870 in Montgomery Co. Three boys were born one of which was my grandfather Harmon Jackson Scott. Andrew died in 1881 probably from old lingering injuries received during the war. After Andrews death Martha married Joself Powell and three more boys were born ; Andrew, Walter, and Manuel. Martha died in 1905 and was buried somewhere in Montgomery County. I was seeking any info on her burial place as it may be related to Joselfs. I am also seeking any info on the three later Powell boys.
Thanks

More Montgomery County Ancestors, WOOD, NEWMAN
LaDawn 3/17/200
Hello List,
I'm looking for anyone that may have connections to the WOOD family that was in Montgomery County at least until the 1850s. I have a Virgil Lafayette Wood that married Matilda Newman. Matilda was the daughter of Moses NEWMAN and Elizabeth "Betsy" Collier. I have listed that Robert N Wood was possibly the father of Virgil Lafayette, but have no proof, Virgil was born in Georgia and migrated to
Montgomery Co before 1849. Virgil and Matilda are on the census for 1850 living with his inlaws Moses and Betsy Newman.

Possibly there is someone out there with connections to the Newman or Wood families, I would love to hear from you. Thanks so much and good luck in all your research

Prowling for Ancestors GRAVES>GRAY>WASHBURN
Vickye White 3/19/2003
Gilliam Graves--Adeline Graves--Jesse Graves--George W. Blocker--William
Gray--Nicholas Fisher

I am in hopes we can help one another.
Gilliam GRAVES married MARY "Polly" WASHBURN. Mary is found in the home of Nicholas & Sarah KIRKLAND FISHER in the 1850 census. Mary married Franklin W. WASHBURN 1859 and Gilliam GRAVES in ca. 1862.

I am very interested in the parents of Mary "Polly" GRAY WASHBURN GRAVES.
Appreciate any information you might provide on the above families. The WASHBURN/GRAY/KIRKLAND/FISHER is a real puzzler.

Franklin W. WASHBURN" aka Frank born ca.1836 where is unknown. The 1860 Hot Spring, Arkansas census says "Frank b. Illinois". Frank married Mary "Polly" GRAY b. 1840 Alabama, 1 February 1859 in Hot Spring, Arkansas in the home of Nicholas FISHER. Franklin W. and Mary had one child John Andrew WASHBURN b. 1860 Hot Spring, Arkansas.
Mary was apparently the daughter of Sarah KIRKLAND by a previous marriage before her marriage to Nicholas FISHER in 1845. Her mother Sarah Fisher.
Family story's report Frank killed in the war. Mary "Polly" remarried Gilliam GRAVES and had their first child in August 1864.

John Andrew WASHBURN is found in Mountain Twp. Garland County, Arkansas 1880 census as follows:
WASHBURN, Andrew w. m. 21 yr married farmer AR TN KY
Amanda w f 23 married keeping house AR GA AL
GRAVES, Elizabeth w f 17 Sister AR GA GA
Gilliara w m 15 brother AR GA GA
Ivenburg w m 13 brother AR GA GA
Randolph w m 9 brother AR GA GA
Lucinda f w 5 sister AR GA GA
The GRAVES children are Andrew's half siblings, but who is Amanda? Does anyone know Amanda?
Mary "Polly" GRAY WASHBURN GRAVES died in 1879.

Subject: Re: Jefferson Collier son of Martin Collier, need source info
I'm constantly amazed that researchers don't take the FIRST STEPS FIRST, when trying to locate information on their ancestors.
One of the VERY first places to look is in Goodspeed, published circa 1890, which is a history book of the nation.
The article you are looking for on Jefferson Collier, appears in the book History of Western Arkansas, Montgomery County, pages 479-81. (this is but one of many volumes of Goodspeed's books.) One can almost always identify the writing of Goodspeed, once they have read a few articles, and this article is no exception. Also, you can identify it from the dates--somewhat. If it had been a more recent story from Montgomery County the wording would read different and the dates would have been more inclusive.

PERSI--is an index for most all printed materials, and this is another excellent choice for a first look.

Subject: Jefferson Collier son of Martin Collier, need source info

Hello List,
Maybe some kind soul could help me out. While sorting through files and adding info to my family history. I came a cross a copy that was taken from a book which tells about Jefferson Coller (son of Martin Collier of Collier's Creek) I want to add this write up to my information but need to know what book it came from, unfortunately no one added that information, and I haven't a clue when or where I got it. It looks like maybe a history of Montgomery County book, possibly one of the Historical society's put this out?

Here is how it starts out: Jefferson Collier, Sr.
Jefferson Collier, Sr., is one who has long been identified with the farming interests of this section, but he also used his interest in furthering all worthy enterprises, and as a result had the confidence, respect and esteem of his fellow men.
(Jefferson Collier was the first white birth on record in what would become Montgomery County)
He was born on Collier's Creek in Montgomery County on July 15, 1820, to Martin and Mary Belle Anderson Collier, the former born in Tennessee and the latter in Kentucky, in which state their marriage nuptials were celebrated. About 1812 they came to what is now Montgomery County and settled on Caddo Creek, about twenty miles from any white settler, but did not remain here long, soon moving to what i snow known as Collier's Creek, where they spent the rest of lives. The father died about 1822 and the mother died August 30, 1861, a member of the Liberty Baptist Church..................."

If anyone has a clue what book this came from I would appreciate the name, so I can list it as a source. And if any one would like a copy of the article, just email me and I'd be happy to send it.
Thanks so much
