Mary C. McConnell born circa 1866 in Montgomery Co., AR to David and Louisa Jane McConnell. She is listed on the 1870 and 1880 Montgomery Co. census records with her parents. In 1884, Mary C. married John R. Baggs in Montgomery Co. John R. Baggs then married Mary E. Bradburn in1891 in Montgomery Co. Most likely Mary C. died and then John remarried to Mary E. It appears that John R. Baggs was the son of William B. and Ellander Baggs as listed on the 1880 Montgomery Co., AR.
I have been unable to locate John R. Baggs on the 1900 census and would appreciate help in locating him.
Thanks,
Carla

Washita Arkansas
Kathleen Myers 4/12/2004
I can't seem to find anything on a town (?) called Washita. I just learned last week that my uncle's father was from there. On his 1904 marriage license it stated:
"George E. Hamilton of Washita in the County of Montgomery and State of Arkansas aged 21 year; and Miss Lillie J. Whittington of Mount Ida......"

Would anyone know anything about this town or have any information about any Hamilton's living there in the early 1900's? Thank you!
Kathleen

There is a town named Washita in the northeastern part of Montgomery Co. It is located at the intersection of highways 88 and 27, about 10 miles north of Mount Ida. Hope this helps.

P.S. For Memorial Weekend we went camping on the shores of Lake Ouachita at the COE Crystal Springs Campground and had a lovely spot, campsites 66 and 68, isolated from the rest of the park (for tents only). Lots of boats out on the lake but we were the only ones water skiing.

There is a good 4.3 mile walk from the church pavilion there to Charlton Campground. A well used trail, the Charlton Trail, for hikers and bikers with a spring pouring out water at the half point on Forest Rd 47. Took us 1 hour 35 minutes and we passed 7 bikers going the opposite direction.

Can you think of any local colloquial expression, sayings, words etc. I remember we were at Big Brushy Recreational Area 'fiddling around' and Mr Vincent, a local, stopped to chat and he said "Look there is a peakerwoood."

How about "Big as Gee-Low Nellie?"
Or when we're lost we "went around by Aunt Laura's house."
Drunk as Cooter Brown ...
I wrote a column about those once, and you have to wonder how some of them got started.

Subject: Ransom & Cintha Barber
Am trying to locate Cintha Barber and family on the 1870 census. I know that Ransom and Cintha had moved to TX where Ransom enlisted. He later was killed and the family moved back to AR. One source mentioned that the family resided in Cooper County, TX, but I have been unable to locate such a county. It doesn't show up as a defunct county either. Knowing me I probably misread some information. Does anyone have any ideas?

George Washington Hill & John Charles Hill
Sharon Minton Hill 9/8/2004

I am still trying to find these brothers parents and or siblings. Where in Alabama are they from?

George Washington Hill born 22 June 1830 Alabama
died 15 May 1913 Montgomery Co. Arkansas
married 1850 (according to census within the year) Franklin Co. AL Luisa Jane Tackett 1835 - 1908

I find George on these census:
1850 Franklin Co. Al
1855 Franklin Co. Al State Census
1860 - I can not locate him!
1870 - Bossier Parish La
1880, 1900 & 1910 Montgomery Co. Ar

George was in 4TH (McNair's) ARKANSAS INFANTRY REIGIMENT CONFEDERATE STATES
OF AMERICA, COMPANY K

In the census records it states George was born in Al Father in NC and Mother in AL
One of my great uncles (George's grandsons) would at times want someone to take him to Al to get the money that belonged his grandfather. But he didn't know WHERE it was.
George settled in Montgomery Co. Ar and lived next door to his brother John Charles Hill.

John Charles Hill born 4 Jan 1827 Alabama
died 26 Sep 1905 Montgomery Co. Arkansas
married 28 Jun 1857 Columbia Co. Arkansas
Susan Elizabeth Hill 1834/8 Alabama - bef 1900 Ar was her father John S Hill?

Census:
Where was he in 1850?
1860 Calhoun Co. Ar listed as C. Hill
1870 Columbia Co Ar listed as Charles Hill
1880 Montgomery Co. Ar listed as Charles Hill
1900 Montgomery Co. Ar listed as Charles J Hill

1882 Montgomery Tax list - listed as Charles John Hill
He is found as Charles or John or a combination of both names.
He enlisted in Co. A, 2nd Battalion Arkansas Cavalry, at Hampton, Calhoun County, Arkansas, on February 20, 1862. On May 15, 1862, the battalion was consolidated with the 6th Battalion Arkansas Cavalry to form the 2nd Regiment Arkansas Cavalry, Col. William Ferguson Slemons commanding. Charles Hill's company became Company H of the new regiment, but was later redesignated as Company G. The 2nd Arkansas Cavalry ceased to exist as a regiment after the Battle of Marais des Cygnes, October 25, 1864. The remnants who escaped were reorganized as McMurtrey's 18th Battalion Arkansas Cavalry in December 1864.
Can anyone help with these boys?
