Notes for JAMES BULLOCK GASTON:
James B. Gaston was born February 8, 1822 in the State of Indiana and moved with his parents to Illinois about 1830, before migrating to Arkansas around 1835, James Gaskins (Gaston) made his first appearance in Hot Springs County (now Montgomery) tax records in 1843 when he reached his twenty-first birthday.

James Gaston spoke his vows of matrimony on the 19th day of February 1846, when he married Lucinda McConnell. Lucinda brought to the marriage a young son, whom James adopted and named William W. Gaston. William became a private in Company "F", 4th Arkansas Infantry during the Civil War, and what happen to him after this or if he had a family is not know. Maybe because James took the child in or because he helped to care for his father-in-law in his later years was the reason Robert McConnell willed the biggest part of his estate to James on December 20, 1865.

James and Lucinda had three boys and seven girls. Nancy the oldest, was born in 1849 and then followed Robert M., Andrew Jarvis, Jackson (Jack), Sarah Elizabeth, Martha S., Matilda Ellen, and Queenie Rosetta Gaston. James settled on land about five miles west of Mount Ida, Arkansas on the South Fork. He was granted a patent of land described as the SW NW NW of Section 24, T. 25., R. 26W. on the 19th day of December 1853 (Patent No. 7591) for forty acres. On December 15, 1859, he was granted Patent No. 15326 which was for eighty acres.

James lived in this area until March 5, 1872 when he acquired Section 27, T. 25., R 26W which is where the Gaston community is now located (1876). He also acquired, although he would have received said land by will, the SE SE of Section 15, T. 2, S., R 26W for one thousand dollars on May 25, 1871. This would have included the mill and machinery owned and operated by Robert McConnell. (ref: By Foster W. McConnell and Waymon Gaston in The History of Montgomery Co., AR).

This is an Ancestor Chart (of sorts) that I discovered posted in the announcement box, on the door of the Gaston Church in Montgomery County, Arkansas. This little church, complete with the Gaston Cemetery, is located about 5-10 miles from Mt. Ida, AR. Dirt road most of the way. But it is beautiful and well kept, and church and cemetery are both still in use. Progenitors of this church and cemetery were my GG grandparents, James and Lucinda Gaston.

My Gaston Line migrated from Indiana to Montgomery County, Arkansas. My GG grandfather was James Bullock Gaston. He was born Feb. 8, 1822, in Greene County, Indiana. He married Lucinda McConnell, born July 4,1827, in Missouri Tsp, Arkansas Territory, which later became Hempstead Co. She was the daughter of Robert McConnell and Sarah ? McConnell. James and Lucinda married on Feb.19, 1846 in Sulphur Springs, Arkansas. James died on July 16,1896 at the home of his son, Jack, in Gaston Twp, Montgomery Co. Arkansas.

James Bullock Gaston, was the son of Robert Gaston born 1799 probably in Indiana. Robert married Sarah "Sally" Bullock, born Sep. 3, 1820, in Knox County, KY.
Robert was the son of Hugh Gaston who married Jane ?. he died August 1830, in Greene Co. Indiana.
Hugh Gaston was the son of Robert Gaston, born in Ireland. He married Margaret Logan, born in Ireland. Robert died in 1838 in Marion Co. Illinois.
Robert was the son of William Gaston b.1685, probably in Ireland. he married Merry Olivet Lemon. he died in 1770 in Ireland.
William was the son of John Gaston, born 1645 in Scotland, and died in Ireland. Wife's name unknown.
John was the son of John "Jean" Gaston, born ca 1600 in France.
