A Coffin!
Eternal Home! Done any funeral planning lately? Take the time to get informed and you will have fewer decisions to make later on. You don't have to buy a casket from a funeral home. Once you know that Grandma wants a homemade casket of cedar, go ahead and help her fine the lumber, a local sawmill, have it planed, find a plan, gather the specifications and a carpenter. Make a cross and four hand grips out of contrasting cedar. Hand grips at either end as well. The coffin will be heavy. Hardware will cost about $60 for the hinges and the two white ropes attached to the inside of the lid. From a J.C. Penny catalog store have a beautiful satin pink comforter ordered and delivered to Mena and ask her daughters to do the cutting, sewing and attach the lining with a staple gun. There will probably be enough material left over for a little pillow satin pink and use the edging to make a sash and attach it inside the lid from one end to the other. Place the coffin in Grandma's front bedroom and she will show everyone who wants to see it and use it to store her photograph albums. It will be beautiful. Hope it will stay out of use for some time yet. Once in a while rub the outside down with lemon oil. The funeral home charged us a $50 handling fee to move the coffin from the house to the funeral home in Mt Ida about nine miles.
A $3000 dollar casket may have cost the funeral home $700 wholesale. Bodies will decay in any casket and the cost is great between them. The expensive rubber gasket does not stop a body from decaying probably cost the funeral home a few dollars. Embalming is required for open casket funerals. Years ago graveside services were held as embalming was not an option and an odor in the church was frown on. Don't tell the funeral director more than they need to know such as how much the deceased was worth or insurance benefits. A loved one can lie in honor in a home, community church or hall. A funeral viewing room is optional. The funeral home may NOT add a "handling fee" if you order the casket on your own. You won't need a coffin if you give your body to medical research. In 1984, the Federal Trade Commission forced change on the industry, requiring, among other things, that funeral homes itemize their charges, required that casket prices, manufacturers' names and model numbers be made available, and allowed independent casket dealers to by supply caskets directly to consumers.
