Oden Cemetery,
Montgomery County, Arkansas

Oak Tree - A nut that held its ground!

Montgomery Co. ARGenWeb Project

A place filled with community, a village of folks, a place filled with history,
filled with pioneers whom pioneered the Hog Jaw - Oden area.

The cemetery is located in Oden. Turn south at the Post Office towards the river and will be on the right in between the Methodist and Macedonia Churches. The Holiness Church building was located across from the road from the Macedonia Church.

Update: On Find A Grave in 2009 photos of the headstones were added by E. Leonard with 635 interments listed - good work - with additional information connecting families from neighboring cemeteries.

In October 2021 715 photos, 92% headstones photographed on FindaGrave.
In May 2022 717 records with 97% photographed on Findagrave. 25 with no grave photo, and of those 16 with no headstone found the other 9 are fairly recent graves and hoping headstones will be added.

As of 24 May 2023 Oden has 725 records on findagrave. 30 with no grave photo. 695 with grave photo.

Cemetery transcription completed in three days, two hours per day, during a spring break visit to the cemetery March 2001 and double the time placing it online. The rows run north to south with row one starting to the left of the entrance.  The oldest graves are near the center with the new graves in the lower section down the bank.  Approximately 600 graves including 34 field stones and 28 blank marble cubes. The rows are not straight so it was difficult to line them up, a few graves had two headstones e.g. veterans and the Goodner grave (old headstone difficulty to read so a new one was placed about ten years ago). Approximately ten FHM Funeral Home Markers.  Oldest marked grave is a ?Goodner grave 1863. Who else is buried here?

Thursday 22 March 2001 at 3 p.m. there was a funeral at the Methodist Church, Oden, so went back down later that afternoon to complete the task. The new grave was near the Cagles. The backhoe had accidentally bumped two large headstones Hopper and Fryar and twisted the headstones and made the William Fryar stone move on its base.

12 June 2001. I  re-walked the cemetery one afternoon doing a spell / date check and looking for the headstone inscriptions mentioned in the cemetery books. Didn't find them. Decoration Day was the 3rd Sunday in May. FS stands for field stones that are no longer present. All the field stones, I counted 35, that added character to the cemetery, had been removed and thrown over the bank at the back of the cemetery including I.P. ____ born Dec__, died March 14 18_5 etched on one stone. Why? It probably makes mowing easier.

Photos taken June 2010

A footstone and plot does not mean a person is buried there. e.g. E.W. has a plot and footstone next to her husband's grave, James Whitehouse. He died in 1922 and Ella died sixty years later was buried in OK.

Loose foot stones are wide enough to trim ends off so are being used by the caretaker to make small markers for unmarked graves.  Looks like a child has gone around and collected eight footstones as if they were playing a letter game. FC    ABS    CG    CAG    JMG    DMG    BLK  The marble footstones markers are just lying clumped together in between two rows.  The caretaker will place the ones with initials in the right places when he is done. He has found several broken stones in bushes and rock piles, and is trying to relocate them too.  There is a  newly broken stone done by children playing in the cemetery.

I compared the cemetery books with my transcription. I cannot believe I missed all these headstones! Can anyone explain? Transcription errors are found in the 1986 and the 1997 Montgomery Co. AR cemetery books but the books contain additional relationship data e.g. d/o, uncle of etc.

Elder Manuel NORMAN had a memorial marker business in Oden in the late sixties and early seventies. His house was located east and two down from the Oden store. The store was "Rusert's Grocery" next house was Carl Willhite's and then Elder Norman's. He kept his front yard clean, the grass being mowed by a local boy, but his back yard was covered with monuments, a pain to mow around. The locals would come along select a headstone and Eld. Norman would take the stone back to his workshop and complete the inscription.

Obituary - courtesy of Jim Sanders, posted 30 June, 2008.
Mollie E. Sanders, age 92 years, 10 months and 10 days departed this life at 10:30 A.M., December 31st, 1952. She was at the home of her daughter, Mrs George White, where she had resided for 28 years. Grandmother was active until the severe burns she suffered 9 days preceding her death.
Mrs Sanders was born in Bell county, Texas, near Temple, February 21, 1860. At the age of 14 she became a christian, following the teaching of a christian father, A. M. Keller, she united with the Methodist church. Her father had an active part in establishing churches in this area of Southern Texas.
At the time of grandmother's death she was an active member, with her presence and prayers in the Methodist church at Oden, Arkansas.
On August 1st., 1877 she & Samuel Isaac Sanders, who preceded her in death February 1, 1910, were united in marriage.
To this happy couple was born 9 children, 4 of whom have preceded her in death. She is survived by 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls.
Nellie Hale, Mt. Ida, Arkansas;
Roy Sanders, Arkadelphia, Ark.
Cora Smith, Cottage Grove, Oregon
Cleo White, Oden, Arkansas
Harve Sanders of Mena, Arkansas.
25 grand children, 42 great grand children and 1 great, great grand son, and a host of friends who loved and admired her humble personality.... Her calling from this earth is a loss to each friend. But is life's greatest promotion to grandmother Sanders - 78 years as a christian is not a life lost.

Jim wrote "My grandfather - Harvey E. Sanders married Belle Cogburn - there were several of his siblings that married in Montgomery county - including one of his older sisters ( he was the youngest - having been born in the IT on the same day as his grandpa passed away ) who married a George White - who I understand was a preacher at one time - his sister - my great aunt Cleo Sanders White - is buried in Oden - near her mother - see above obit - that being my gr grandmother - we called her little grandma - back to George and Cleo - I knew them well - they were members of Mt Giliad in Norman - I understand he was a preacher - not confirmed - Aunt Cleo had a great memory and I gleaned a lot from her - recorded on cassette - Geo and Cleo had several children - JIMMY - S.D. - Edith - and a couple of others - S D was the closest to me - he moved to Fort Smith back in the late 50's early 60's - a really good man - I think I heard that he was judge or mayor of Montgomery County or Oden - or something like that...
