I have not been able to connect this William Archibald Fair line to Rev. Adam and Helen Fair ex Tuscaloosa area Alabama in the 1870s. Adam also first settled in the Black Springs area but came before 1880 then to the Pencil Bluff area of Montgomery Co. TX. Arch came to the county in 1884 or 1885.
Arch and Adam were both Methodist Ministers. HOW ARE ADAM & ARCH CONNECTED?

Oden Cemetery
W.A. Fair Feb 1, 1850-March 31 1932 (Willie's Uncle) [sic] Who is Willie? Roxy is not listed in the cemetery book at Oden. Why not?

William Major (Willie) was the son of William Joseph FAIR b. 15 Dec 1855 AL m. Martha J. Self . William Joseph FAIR was the son of Rev. Adam Fair. So
was Arch the son of Rev. Adam Fair ??

<http://home.cfl.rr.com/bfair/Bernard.htm>
Who is W.H. Fair? He was another minister Hog Jaw area 1918?

The information in 'Montgomery County: Our Heritage Vol. 1' on William Archibald Fair page 69 was submitted by Rose Bud Doughten Stafford.

"William Archibald Fair was born in Jefferson Co. Alabama on January 3, 1850, died Montgomery County, Arkansas, in March 1932. Arch and his first wife had four children: William A., Jr., Robert, Mary Jane and Madison. It is thought that the mother died at the birth of Madison or soon after.

Mr Fair married Almira Roxy Page later. Two children born in Alabama were Carroll (Sept. 1881 and Henry Alvin in July 1883.

The Fairs came to Montgomery County in 1884 or 1885. Six more children were born here:
Juvenile N,. 1885, John Wesley in Oct. 1887, Rosa Etta on January 5, 1889;
Queen Anne in November 1891; Roxy Elizabeth in February 1894; and Mittie in January 1897.

The Fairs settled in the Black Springs area, where Arch was a farmer and a Methodist Minister. He rode a circuit including several counties. He preached at the Pore Horse (Cedar Bluff) Methodist Church (near Norman's present water system).

In later years he and Roxie moved into the Hog Jaw area near Oden.

Roxy died in 1916; Uncle Arch died in 1932 at Norman at the home of his daughter Rosa Etta Doughten. He is buried beside Roxy in the Oden Cemetery.

Alvin Fair taught school in the Womble school on the hill in the early 1900s.

Roxy and Arch left many descendants and multitudes of living memories." Rose Bud Doughten Stafford

I received the following article from 'BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL MEMOIRS'
Western Arkansas, published 1891 by Chicago and Nashville: The Southern Publishing Company; Polk county, page 449

"William J. Davis is the clerk of the circuit court of Polk county, Ark, but
by birth is a Georgian, born in Dade County, in 1838, to William and Margaret (Cox) Davis, who were born in North Carolina, in 1787 and 1804, respectively, their marriage being consummated in Alabama, from which state they afterward moved to Georgia, where Mr. Davis died in 1852. His widow survived him until 1873, when she too passed away, her death occurring in Dallas, Ark,. she as well as her husband being a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. The maternal grandfather, Richard Cox, was a North Carolinian, who moved to Georgia, and died at his grandsons' home, a brother of the subject of this sketch, in 1848, having been a farmer throughout life, a Revolutionary soldier, and a member of the A.F. and A. M. He was of Scotch descent, was well to do, and reared a large family of children. William Davis, the father of William J., was married twice, and had ten children by his first wife and four by his last. His son, William J., being next to the youngest by his last wife. He was reared on a farm with the advantages of a good schooling, but upon the death of his father, he left school and began to farm for himself. In 1857, he left Dade County, GA and came to Polk county, Ark., where he was married in 1861 to Miss Belle, daughter of John b. and Sarah Vaught, both of whom were born in No AL and in 1857 came to Arkansas, the death of the father occurring in Montgomery county, in 1881, and that of the mother in 1885. Mrs.. Davis was born in Alabama, and died in 1868 leaving three children, two of whom are living. His second marriage took place in 1874 and was to Miss Alice, daughter of Thomas and Mary Pate, the former born in Alabama and the latter in Connecticut; their marriage being celebrated in Texas.

Mrs. Davis was born in Texas and has born Mr. Davis five children, all of whom are living. In July, 1861, Mr. Davis joined Co. K, 24th AR infantry, in AR and was in all thee engagements in which that army participated, being in the Georgia campaigns in the battles of Franklin, Nashville and down to Mobile, AL. He was wounded several times, but not severely until the last fight at Bentonville, NC when he lost his left arm and right hand. He way captured four times, but made his escape each time with the exception of the time he was captured at Arkansas Post on December 31 1862. when he was imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio and at Fort Delaware. At the end of about six mos. he was exchanged at City, Point, Va.

Barefoot

Greetings,
Has anyone seen the surname Barefoot in Montgomery County during your research? One of my ancestors, Edwin Smith Rowton, married Elizabeth Emaline Barefoot in Montgomery Co. in 1848. The couple were then found next, on the 1850 Census of Guadalupe County Texas. I am trying to find the parents of Elizabeth Barefoot, but have come up dry. The 1850 Texas Census shows her place of birth as Tennessee, as does Edwin Rowton. The Rowton's moved to Montgomery Co. in 1846, and settled on the ground that became Black Springs. I have found no mention of any Barefoot in the area. I have looked in the census indexes we have in the Wichita library, and some of them are of poor quality and hard to read, but have come up empty. Were the surrounding counties always named what they are today ? Any suggestions?

Rowton

Greetings Montgomery County researchers,
I am posting this to the Mont. Co. site, as I know there are several Rowton researchers on this list.
There has been a long standing debate in the Rowton clan, and those tied to the Rowton's, over one gentleman in particular. I now have the proof to put some of this to rest.
There has been a long standing debate over Chillocton Rowton, whom I found in the 1850 Montgomery county census of Caddo Township, living with his father, William D. Rowton. Chillocton was 11 years old in this census.

In the 1870 Montgomery Co. Census of Caddo Township, Chillocton age 31, is shown as head of household with his wife Martha J. (Ellington), age 28. Chillocton is listed as a farmer, and being born in Tennessee.

Here is where the confusion starts, Chillocter Silkirk Rowton is listed as a soldier in the Spanish American war. It has been thought that the difference in spelling was the work of the penmanship of census takers, and could very well be, but if this was the same man, he would have began the Spanish American War at age 69. This I find highly unlikely.

I have a picture of Chillohter Silkirk Rowton ( this name is written on the back), which my mother says was taken around 1910-1920. In thispicture, Chillocter appears to be around 30 years of age. The style of the photograph, and the clothing seems to support this time period.

Some of the family have also shown a marriage to Rosa Winkler, which is something that I could not prove until this morning. Faye Sandy of Texas, who posts to the Logan Co. site, sent me this record yesterday:

From Logan Co. marriage records,
Rowton, C.S., 38, Prairie View, to Rosa Winkler, 28, Paris, 5 Sept. 1912, by Fr. Aloysius Baumgaertner, J.J.M. Rowton security. Bool I, page 170.

My daughter works part time in the Logan Co. courthouse. I called her this morning and had her run upstairs and confirm this. She just called me with affirmation.

Well it turns out that every one was right, except there are two Chollocter (or Chillocton) Rowton's.
I have no proof as to who the latter Chillocter belongs to, but suspect that he is the son of Edwin Smith Rowton. I also suspect that Edwin Smith is the son of William D. Rowton, but have no proof of this either. A daughter of Edwin Smith Rowton, Lucy Jane Rowton, was my Great Grandmother. The last census I have been able to find Edwin Smith Rowton on, was the 1860 Fanin Co. Texas Census, which is no help here.
Well I hope I haven't rambled on to much,
Sincerely,
Dale Morrow

For those who have ancestors or relatives buried in the Avant Cem. Decoration day is the first Sunday in May. Come to visit and if you want listen to the preaching and singing that is going on. Then at noon leave the cemetery and head for the Avant Church where we gather for a pot luck dinner.

If you went to school at Avant they have a reunion the first Saturday in May held at the Avant church and they have a pot luck dinner also.

I can not locate these folks! Can someone help?
Isabella M. Avant born 1834 Carroll Co. TN d/o Thomas Avant & Judith Fite died 1912 married 15 Nov 1852 Dallas Co. Arkansas
Theorick M. Lanaer (on marriage cert.) or Lanier born 1832 Georgia died 1900

"Thea" is on the 1850 Dallas Co. Ar census, then I find him on the 1869 Montgomery Co. AR tax list. Both he and Isabella have cement markers on their graves at Avant Cem. with the years. There are 4 Lanier children's graves beside them, no names or dates just markers stating Lanier children. The Rev. John Lanier is said to have been their son. I can not find them on the Montgomery Co. Ar census at any time. Where did they live? They had to have been living in the Avant area around the time of  their deaths or at least Thea who died first. Who were their children and
descendants?

family:
Joseph M Jones m Julia A unknown (She was Cherokee Indian and we have pictures of them). They had son Walter Wire Jones b Rattlesnake Hollow Norman, ARK. d 25 aug 1918 m Ethel Ollie Corder. After his death Ethel came to WV and remarried and the second marriage children were b WV. Ethel's children with Walter Wire Jones b in Norman ARK were Myrles, Hersel Samuel b 1914 d 2001 (my step-father), Louie Lyle and Brenice Gwendelyn b Weaver, WV.

I would appreciate anything on the family. I would like to help my sis with her lineage on the Jones line. Not many years ago some family from there sent my mother a nice family tree and they sent it back without even making a copy. Now we have nothing to go on. Marge

Hello list- Does any one have any ideas how to research for School records in Montgomery county? I am looking for school records of the Risenhoover children( these would be from 1894- onward to abt 1904. Though my research, indicates that this family had not much education, I would like to see if their are existing records. The childrens names were Mike, Elmita (Mittie) Jesse, William ( Ervin) Mattie. Evie, and Gurtie( but her full name was Lucy Gurtrude, Parents names: Ed and Sarah Jane Risenhoover, but may find only Sarah jane Risenhoover, because Edward Died in 1903. My grandmother spoke of going to a school called Chilin?? By the river bottom. Could there have been any schools that were by the Ouchita or Arkansas River, by that name, or close to it?? Mike Risenhoover had about 1o yrs of schooling, Jess about 7, and my grandmother about three, havent found out if the rest of the family had any years. would appreciate any help on locating the family records. Thank you very much for sharing this piece. I found it interesting as I have been told that the Gibbs mill later was sold to the Knights (Thomas Mixon Knight and his wife Octavia Freeman Maddox Knight, and their son, Abner B. Knight and his wife, Missouri Alice Carlisle). I have not verified that assertion. The location of the Knight mill was on the site now occupied by  the Rip Torn camp for boys, outside of Mt. Ida.

I'm wondering if anyone knows if any of the Maddox family members mentioned in this piece might be related to any of the three Maddox relatives I have been able to identify: Octavia Freeman Maddox, my great grandmother, Harriet Maddox, her sister, and John Dee Maddox, their father. John Dee Maddox was married to Elizabeth Bonner, and I am not certain of the spelling of
Elizabeth's last name.

My father was Clark Knight, and he was born in Mt. Ida in 1906. He died in 1992.
Thanks for any help with this family.

William Washington Kelly

4/24/2001, 2:15:27 PM

My ancestor, William Washington Kelly (b. 1830, GA), left Blount Co., AL about 1872-1873 and went to AR. I know that in Feb. 1873 his wife Mary Chamblee Kelly rented a horse and wagon in Blount Co., AL and went to AR. She returned to Blount Co. in March 1873 where she reported her husband had died in AR. Legal documents were filed but in all of them there is no county in AR named and there is no exact date of death.

It seems quite a few people from Blount Co., AL left there right after the Civil War because times were so hard. Many of them went to Montgomery Co., AR. I do not know for sure that W. W. Kelly went to Montgomery Co., but perhaps he went with those others who did.

I am not sure why W. W. Kelly's wife went to AR in 1873. Did she receive word he had been injured or died? Why is there no mention of the county in AR or date of death in the AL records? Did she bury him in Montgomery Co? If so, where? Was he just passing through and happened to die there?

Can anyone help answer these questions? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find out what happened to W. W. Kelly? I'd really like to find out when and where he died.
Thanks for your help,
Luther Kelly

Hello Betty Prince...
John & Marge Schulke
5/15/2001, 4:29:12 AM
I'm hoping you will see this posting or maybe someone will forward this to you. I do not know how to reach you. Thanks for the info on the Jones family of Montgomery Co., ARK. You mentioned that you do not know Walter Ware Jones who is buried in the family cemetery. I can tell you a bit about him.

He was my step-father's father and his name is Walter Wire Jones. He was b 1886 d 1921 in Jerome, AZ. He died of TB and bled to death from a nose bleed. His father Joseph Martin also died of TB and apparently Walter contracted the TB from him. The doctor apparently told him that he needed to go to another climate and the higher altitude in AZ was too much for him causing his nose to bleed. He married Ethel Ollie Corder (dau. of Louis Corder and Sarah Elizabeth Shockey) abt 1910 and they had four children: Myrles, Hersel Samuel b 1914 d 2001 (my step-father), Louie Lyle and Brenice Gwendelyn Jones. After Walter died, Ethel brought his body back to Montgomery Co., ARK by train where he is buried in the Jones Cemetery. She came back east and married again and had more children.

Walter worked as a foreman in a copper mine in Arizona. They lived in a tent and I have pictures of the family in front of the tent.

Walter Wire Jones is the son of Joseph Martin Jones and Julia Elizabeth Ann Heathcock/Hathcock.
Joseph Martin Jones is the son of William Wiley and Eleanor Wofford.
Joseph is a brother to your Charles Henry Jones b 1866
Thanks again. Marge

I attended the Evans reunion this weekend which coincides with decoration at Macedonia Cemetery where a lot of my husbands Evans line are buried. I was asked by my husbands cousin, Mae Daniels, the daughter of Alex (Elek, Alec ) Evans and Birtie Mae SINGLETON Evans for help finding any of her mothers family. Her name may have been Berdie or something similar. Birdie Mae was the daughter of Hessie (could have been a nickname) and Mandy Singleton. Birdie Mae had two sisters Grace and Ina. Birdie Mae died shortly (within days of) giving birth to Mae. This would have been 1917. A sister in law of mine believes that Birdie Mae is buried in Brushy Cemetery probably in an unmarked grave since there is no record in the online record. Her father went on to marry two other times and had children by both. We know them. I would very much like to be able to help her find some of her mothers family as she only knows what I have written here. Any help will be appreciated so that her children will know about the other half of their ancestry. Thank you.

New Age message at Mount Ida crystal clear

By J. MICHAEL KENNEDY
Los Angeles Times
MOUNT IDA , Ark. - This is crystal country, "New Age" nirvana. They measure their crystals here by the ton. Mount Ida , in the heart of the Ouachita Mountains, is the self-proclaimed "Crystal Capital of the World," home of the annual Quartz Crystal Festival Oct. 20-22, not to mention the World's Championship Quartz Crystal Dig. Some folks hereabouts have been mining quartz crystals for generations. But most of them barely eked out a living, selling what they had dug from the red clay to gem and mineral enthusiasts. Then along came the New Agers, a loose network of spiritualists with beliefs in reincarnation, miracles, astrology and communicating with the afterlife. Actress Shirley MacLaine is perhaps the most famous of the crystal proponents. Belief in the power of crystals quickly translated into a multimillion-dollar industry for Arkansas, where 99 percent of the quartz in this country is mined. One estimate in 1987 put the amount of crystals bought in the United States at $100 million. The place that felt most of the effect of the crystal craze was right here in Montgomery County, one of the poorest regions in the state, with perhaps the richest lode of crystals anywhere. It experienced a veritable Crystal Rush of the '80s. "We're sitting on the largest deposit of pure quartz crystal in the world," said Paul Griffith, coordinator of the Mount Ida Chamber of Commerce. Many crystals - pieces of clear, transparent quartz - are strikingly beautiful. Some of the larger crystal clusters, which sell for as much as $200 a pound, have clear points that shoot out in all directions, giving them the look of a huge, glittering jewel.

Does anyone know how I can obtain information on Arkansas State  Representatives for the 1860's? My Gibson Robinson is said to have been the Harold (Cedar Glades) postmaster in 1845, a State representative in the 1860's, and a member of the Henderson Masons. Hoping I can find some biographical details either thru the Masons or the state representative records. But no luck so far.

More About JOHN "NELSON" MILLER:

Burial: Baptist Cemetery, Trenton, GA.
iv. ROBERT MORGAN MILLER, b. March 14, 1863, Dallas, AR; d. June 30, 1937, Helena, Montana; m. JOSEPHINE O. EVANS, 1901, Highwood, Montana;
b. Highwood, Montana; d. Blanville, Montana.

Notes for ROBERT MORGAN MILLER:
Robert Morgan Miller was born 14 March, 1863 in Dallas, Arkansas, the fourth and youngest child of his parents. His father, James Monroe Miller, a 3rd Lieutenant in Williamson's Arkansas Cavalry int he Confederate Army died in captivity at Johnson's Island near Sandusky, Ohio 1 October, 1864; his mother, Elizabeth Killian Miller died of pneumonia and tuberculosis 24

February 1865 just before Robert turned two, without knowing of the death of her husband. Robert was raised by his grandparents, John and Nancy Miller, and his aunt, Mary Jane, until his sister Nancy married the Reverend John Wesley Vantrease in 1871. Nannie took him with her to her new home, and he lived with them until he was 15. At age 15, he went to Texas and worked there on a ranch.

At age 21 he came up the Chisholm Trail with the first herd of the O(Circle) Ranch cattle outfit to come to Montana. Some of the old ranch buildings, where the town of Circle now stands, and which he helped to build are still in use. He was later employed on the construction of the Great Northern Railroad through Montana, and then worked for a while in the woods near Helena.

About 1899 or 1900 he homesteaded in upper Sand Coulee, Montana near Evans Post Office. There, he met and married Josephine Evans of Lower Highwood March 17, 1901. In 1903, he traded his farm for cattle, and with his family, drove them to Culbertson. He worked for a year or so for J.S. Day, across the Missouri River from Culbertson, then he and his wife filed on 'desert' claims on Red Bank Creek 10 miles northeast of what is now Bainville.
The first winter most of the cattle died and he turned to farming with somewhat primitive equipment. Later, he mostly raised horses. He resided on the ranch for 35 years, in a constant battle with drought and debt. He died 1 July 1937, while visiting at the home of his son, Robert, in Helena, Montana (written by his son, Robert E. Miller, father of Dinah Miller Tillotson)

OBITUARIES;
Robert Morgan Miller was born at Dallas, Arkansas, March 14, 1863. His father, a soldier in the confederate army, died a year later, and his mother died from hardships of the Civil War. He came to Montana in 1884 with a trail herd from Texas and he engaged in ranching which occupation he followed nearly all his life except for a few years when he worked on construction work for the Great Northern Railway, and at lumbering near Helena. He was married to Josephine Evans of Highwood in 1901, and to this union were born three children, Robert, Nelson, and Gladys now Mrs. Wm. Harmon, these with 10 grandchildren survive.
They came to Blanville in 1902 and lived on a ranch at Red Banks Creek most of the time, and part of the time in town. He was esteemed by all who knew him, and he devoted much attention to the education of his children. Of an active disposition, he kept busy even with the advancing years and never considered himself retired. During the past month his health failed rapidly and just before the final crisis he went to Helena to the home of his son Robert for the medical attention where he passed away June 30, 1937, aged 75 years three months and 16 days. His passing comes as a distinct loss to his family and also to the larger circle of his friends and acquaintances by whom he was universally loved and respected. He was a regular attendant of the Methodist church and was deeply interested in Bible Study and the things of the spiritual life.

Funeral Services were held at the Harmon Home on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. F. W. Age of the Methodist Church who spoke on the subject, "Light at Evening." A quartette composed of Mrs. Chas. Johnson, and others. At his personal request he was laid to rest in a private burial lot on the Harmon Ranch SE of town where he was laid to rest beside the body of his grandchild, Lauren Harmon who died of drowning three years to the day of his funeral.
