West Washita Cemetery
Montgomery County, Arkansas

Three Civil War veterans buried here. Hayes, Giffin and Harris.

The Little Tombstone On The Hill

The lonely tombstone, stood on the hill.
Waiting and watching and standing so still.

A baby buried so long ago.
A little one, we did not know.

He lay there by himself for 91 years.
After we found him, we were in tears.

Glenn had waited for family to come by.
That he could stop them and at least say hi.

He made an impression, the day we met.
We loved him then, and we won't forget.

A forgotten baby of long ago.
Why did they forget him, we don't know.

The little tombstone now stands on the hill .
Waiting for us to come back, He knows that we will.

"A Forgotten Baby"
Glenn Chapmond was a baby born April 11, 1906. He was the son of Porter Garland Chapmond and Dora May Shephard.  Little Glenn died May 8, 1906 and was buried at the West Washita Cemetery, Washita, Montgomery Co. Ark. He lay there for 91 years before he was found by Eunice Chapmond and Lois O. Chapmond. It was if God had guided us there. We entered the cemetery and were scared to death of snakes. We were talking about watching for snakes around each others feet. All of a sudden we had the most peaceful feeling, and forgot about snakes, or any other unusual things you encounter in a cemetery. Lois threw up her hands, and said show us, and she walked straight to the headstone of baby Glenn. She screamed at me, and I thought to myself, isn't she going to give me time to look at the headstones over here.  But when I looked up in the direction that she had gone.  I saw the strangest sight.  A small headstone all alone on a hill in the cemetery.  And Lois standing there, I could see the light behind them, shinning real bright through the tall, thick pine trees. The little headstone on top of the hill all alone read.....

Glenn
Son of P.G. & D.M. Chapmond
April 11, 1906
May 8, 1906
Weep not Father and Mother for me.
For I am in Glory waiting for Thee.

The very next year we took Mary Lillian Chapmond and her two daughters to visit the half brother, she never knew existed. She had always known about Lois Chapmond, her half sister born in 1908. But she was 79 years old before she knew about Glenn. Why her Father never spoke of Glenn, we will never know. Why did he die? What was wrong with him? We may never know the answer to these questions. But I am sure there was no reason to forget him. I am sure in the one month he lived he made an impression on his parents. He made an impression on me in one day....... And he was dead....... But it was enough to last me a lifetime........

Glenn.... You will never be forgotten again.....
I Promise....... REST IN PEACE BABY !!!
