ABOUT THIS PROJECT A record was made about 1969-1970 of all cemeteries in Nevada County by the Home Demonstration Clubs. This information has been very helpful for those researching their ancestors. However, these records are now approximately 30 years old, and we felt that an update was needed. This started out as a small project. We first thought about just making a list of all marked Civil War veteran’s graves in the county, since many people are interested in that war. That would just involve walking over each cemetery looking for Civil War soldiers. Then we realized that the veterans of other wars and those that served in peace-time also made a valuable contribution. We then abandoned the first idea and just decided to update the cemetery records and include all military information that was recorded at the grave sites. This information is included in the remarks section of each cemetery record. For this project, we tried to follow the following rules of recording information: 1. Information is recorded as it appears on the marker, even if it appears to be misspelled. 2. Double and triple markers mean those that are attached to one base. 3. Funeral home markers are usually listed as metal markers in remarks column. 4. Graves marked by rocks, petrified wood, concrete, etc. with no other information were tallied and a total given at the end of each record. 5. Sometimes a grave is tallied under (Unknown) if some information is found such as partial dates or parts of a name. 6. Driving directions to each cemetery are given in a simple way so that most people can locate them without too much trouble. This is not intended to replace the earlier records. They are still important and some contain information about family relationships that our records do not include. One must also realize that the first records were recorded 30 years ago and some markers have become unreadable. Even though we tried to be very careful in recording this information, we know that we probably made some mistakes and for that we apologize. We hope this information will be helpful to future generations searching for their ancestors. It has taken us almost two years to cover all the cemeteries in Nevada County working on weekends and vacation time and many hours of typing to compile these records. We hope that some of you will find some information here that will be beneficial in your search for your roots. Jerry and Jeanie McKelvy May 12, 1999
