Union High School of Bodcaw The following article appeared in the March 5, 1908 issue of The Nevada News. A picture of the school and some of the faculty can be found in the July 30, 1908 issue. This school was a well-known institution in those days. Students came from all over the county to further their education, boarding with local residents. Most people of Nevada and adjoining counties know something of Union High School, but few who are not personally interested in the work of the school, know anything of the principal characteristics. This being true, we think it best to give a short sketch of our work...... The courses given in this school consist of regular high school work and are as follows: Music, Elocution, Sciences, Mathematics, Latin, and Greek. The young ladies of this school have a club known as the "Excelsior Club". We have a library containing 140 volumes of the best books published. The word "excelsior" means higher, and we are working for a higher ideal of life, being true to the club which wears the name "Excelsior". We give programs every two weeks which consist of songs, recitations, plays, and music. There are about twenty members. The entire association should be proud of the society, for we are working now that the little folks of this country may reap what we are sowing. The Adelphean Literary Society, composed of young men was organized three years ago, with a membership of twenty-five. We began the work of building a library--a difficult task indeed, for a bunch of poor schoolboys, and while we have met many obstacles, yet the work has been a success. We now have a well furnished hall with a library of 307 volumes of the best books published. The name Adelphean means brotherly-a band of brothers..... Bodcaw is not the only school, but it is a good one, and less expensive than many others of its kind. Many of the most enterprising young men and women of this county are students at this school. We feel proud of them.
