The only legal execution that has ever occurred in the county was the hanging of J.M. Armstrong for the waylaying and killing of Dr. T.J. Ferguson. Armstrong was captured about a year after the deed was committed; was tried and sentenced and was hanged April 30. 1886. His accomplice, John Roland, was tried and sentenced to serve a term of twelve years in the penitentiary.
