ALEXANDER FIELDS joined the 1st South Carolina Infantry at Darlington S.C. on April 28, 1862. He was in Company H which was commanded by Captain Adams. The regiment was known as Butler's regiment. Alexander (Alex) was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on April 28, 1865.
After the war, Alex returned home to his wife, Martha, and children in the small town of Lydia, South Carolina, which is near Darlington. Much was lost by Alex and his family and the reconstruction period was severe for the Fields family. In 1869, Alex and Martha decided to move to the frontier and start anew. They ended up in the part of Prairie County that became Lonoke County, and they settled near Butlerville in 1871 to raise their family. They died and are buried in the Butlerville Cemetery.
