Historical Photo

Randolph County, Arkansas

Submitted by: Carol Thompson

The "Monarch", a boat built and operated by Charles F. Kennison, is pictured as it was pushing a barge of logs up Black River, just below Pocahontas, in 1914.
Men pictured in Mr. Kennison's crew are Chester Alfrey, Connie Kiefer and Johnny Wyatt, and others. Mr. Kennison is on the boat at the right and his crew is on the barge. The boat was powered with a Morse-Fairbanks gasoline engine. The photo was taken just below the old Black River highway bridge, and the Frisco Railroad Bridge can be seen in the background.
