Things have certainly changed in Pocahontas since this group of young misses played basketball for Pocahontas, back in 1916. Posing for the photographer in their mannish caps, black hightop shoes, black or white cotton stockings and the dresses they wore as uniforms are, from left, "Missy" Schnabaum, Gladys Shannon, Ouida Blankenship, Evelyn McNairy, Rheta Price, Ruth Jackson, Edna Going, Marie Greer, Essie Bennett, Pauline Bishop and Novella Cates. Painted on the ball which Miss Cates holds are the words and figures: "P.P.S., 1916". The basketball
court was out of doors on the schoolground back then. Compare these facilities to the PHS gym (Schoonover Field House) of today. PHS dropped girls' basketball in the mid-1950's. The school coal shed can be seen at left, and at extreme right is one of the outhouses (without plumbing).
