APPLICATION FOR PENSION

TO THE HONORABLE COUNTY COURT OF SCOTT COUNTY,
Sitting as a pension Board:
The undersigned, as an ex-Confederate soldier, hereby applies for a pension under the provisions of an act of the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas, entitled "An Act for the Relief of Certain Soldiers of the late War between the States", approved April 1, 1891, upon the following grounds:
That he is a bona fide citizen of the State of Arkansas, and has resided within this State for more than twelve months next before the filing of this application:
That he enlisted as a soldier in the State of South Carolina during the War between the States in Company "K" of the 5th Reg't. South Carolina Vols. and afterwards enlisted as a member of the Palmetto Sharpshooters of South Carolina.
That while in the discharge of his duty as a soldier of said company and Regiment in the service of the State of Arkansas, or of the Confederate States of America, he received a wound from the effects of which he partially lost the use of his left arm and shoulder - having been wounded in said service at the battle of "Seven Pines" which has always prevented me from performing manual labor.
That by reason of said wound and disability he is now indigent and incapacitated for manual labor;
That he is not receiving any aid from this State or from the United States, for such injuries, under any other statute, and that therefore he makes application for pension under the act aforesaid.

Was not able to do anything on account of the wound for two years after same was received and my arm is still somewhat disabled on account of the wound - and the place where I was wounded still gives me pain at times. Am also afflicted with kidney disease and my eyesight and hearing are both very bad - and also on account of advanced age, my age being now 68 years, and that such disability is not the result of my own vicious habits still persisted in, so help me God.

I, M.A. Stewart, a duly registered and practicing physician in Scott County, Arkansas, do hereby certify that I am personally well acquainted with E.L. Gentry of Winfield Arkansas, who is an applicant for a pension under the Statutes of Arkansas.
That at his request I have made an examination of his physical condition, and find: State description and character of wound: He was shot in left shoulder at Battle of Seven pines, entering anterior passing immediately above axilary artery, dislocating shoulder, and was removed in back near seventh vertebra.
Physical condition and to what cause is his incapacity for manual labor attributable: to adhesions left from wound, and kidney and bladder derangement so severe that he is compelled to be taking something for relief almost every day and that said disability is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in: I have known him for the three past years in which time he has been very moderate in his habits.
Extent of disability: Three fourths.

PROOF OF SERVICE

State of Arkansas}
County of Scott}
On this 12 day of May, A.D. 1902, before the undersigned Clerk personally appeared C.M. Vise of Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas, and B.E. Thomas, of Winfield, Scott County, Arkansas, each of whom I hereby certify to be credible persons and worthy of full faith and confidence, and who being duly sworn each say that they are personally well acquainted with the applicant Elias L. Gentry, having known him for 45 years and 40 years, respectively. That he was a Confederate soldier, as we are informed and have good cause to believe. He informs us that he belonged to Co. "K" of Col. Joseph Walker's Reg't. of Infantry Vols. from the State of South Carolina, originally Jenkins Regiment and his statement we verily believe to be true. [One sentence lined through here.] That he is now and has been for the past twelve months a bona fide resident of Arkansas. That he is incapacitated for manual labor by reason of advanced age and consequent debilitated physical condition, his age being now about 68 years. That to the best of our knowledge and belief, all property now owned by him and his wife, together, is not worth exceeding $400 exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel. That neither he nor his wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, or the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150 per year. That we have no interest whatever in his claim. We have known the soldier

continuously for the number of years respectively as hereinbefore stated, and he has always been a good, truthful law-abiding citizen and we have no doubt whatever but that he served in the Confederate Army as claimed. We have always heard and understood that the soldier served in the Confederate Army and never heard anything intimated to the contrary. We never served in the Confederate Army with soldier but we each were acquainted with him before the war commenced. Affiant C.M. Vise says however that he accompanied soldier to Spartanburg, S.C. where he (soldier) together with about 100 others took the train with the understanding that they were on their way to join the Confederate Army. This was about April, 1861, as well as I remember - or just about the time of the fall of Fort Sumpter. I also saw soldier during the war after he was wounded. Think he was then on the retired list. I also saw soldier and have been acquainted with him during the whole time since the war. Affiant B.E. Thomas says he only remembers when soldier left home and it was the understanding that he had gone to join the Confederate Army. Affiant Thomas also says that he remembers when soldier Gentry returned home from the Army that he stopped at our house and he seemed to be wounded in the left shoulder - his arm was in a sling - and he showed me the bullet which he said penetrated his shoulder - and subsequently often I saw the place where he said he was shot. Affiant C.M. Vise says his age is 55 years, and affiant B.E. Thomas says his age is 51 years.
[Signed] C.M. Vise
[Signed] B.E. Thomas
Sworn to and subscribed before me on this 12 day of May, 1902, and I hereby certify that the above named affiants are credible persons and that all their statements [are] entitled to full faith and credit.
