Our readers may have noticed that the CITIZEN has not contained as much original matter for the last three weeks as usual. They can attribute the "loss or gain" to the fact that court has been in session, and the editor has been "playing lawyer."
J.J. Gipson a wealthy and well known merchant of Gipson, near the Choctaw line, this county, was shot from ambush and killed on Thursday morning, February 21. Mr. Gipson was a member of the I.O.O.F., and the Lodge at this place has offered a reward of $200 for the arrest and conviction of the assassin. No clue to the perpetrator except his tracks.

ASSASSINATED

Gipson, Ark., Feb. 21, 89.
7 o'clock, p.m.
Editor Citizen:--J.J. Gipson has just departed this life, on account of a gunshot wound received at about 8 o'clock this morning.
In the death of J.J. Gipson this community has lost its strongest arm of help in the time of need, which will never be replaced. And this evening while he was suffering, he said it was so hard to suffer and die this way, when he had never harmed anyone in his life, but, said he: "I must die and leave you all!" And sure enough he has crossed the river and is done with his sufferings. It does look so hard to see a husband and a father taken from a wife, and two orphan children left to grope through a world, that should be a Christian world, but looks like it is not.
I will close by saying that there is one more house of mourning in Scott county, and one more unchristian act added to a series of crimes. Oh, when will this cease.
             Wm. Judd.
