OLD HON CEMETERY

Ed Hon related this story to me. This cemetery was started when a wagon was going past Jackson Hon's homestead. They asked to camp and permission was granted. They had a sick daughter and thought the rest would do her good. She died during the night so the next morning her father asked Jackson Hon if he would mind if they buried their daughter on his property. This little girl was the first person buried in the cemetery. Jackson Hon later moved his family across the river to the present location of Hon. There have been no burials in this cemetery in recent years. In rainy weather the Poteau River was often so high families couldn't reach the cemetery for burials, so a new cemetery was started on the north side of the river. Pictured above is the tombstone of Lucy Hon, who died in 1868. To see a list of the tombstones in this cemetery click here. If you can supply information about any of the unmarked graves in this cemetery please contact Betty Leeper.
