CORONERS INQUISITIONS

The following information is from loose papers at the Scott County courthouse. They were copied and transcribed by Carolyn Hanna and published in a book entitled "Coroners Inquisitions" by Scott County Historical & Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1560, Waldron, AR 72958. The book may be purchased from the Society for $10.00 plus $2.00 postage OR you may write to them for copies of the pages containing information on specific people listed below for $1.00 per page. The number of pages for each individual is indicated in the column at the right below. A Coroner's Inquisition took place when a death occurred under suspicious circumstances, or when someone was found dead with no witnesses to explain why. The county coroner usually impaneled a group of men from the neighborhood, called a coroner's jury, and they went to the location of the death and examined the evidence found there, interviewed witnesses, etc. and reached a decision on how the death had occurred.
