CAROLYN CREEKMORE

George W. Bush and Carolyn Creekmore
Submitted by Dusty Helbling

Born in Fort Smith, Arkansas into a family I would call golf royalty in this state. Her grandfather, Steve W. Creekmore Sr. besides being Quarterback for the Arkansas Razorbacks 1907-1910 and a member of the Baseball Team, started their golf tradition. He was four times state golf champion 1930-34, was runner up 1937 and 1941. He was on the U.S. Senior Golf Team that played in England, Scotland, France and Sweden. He played with the King of Sweden in this match.

Carolyn's father, Steve Creekmore Jr. (1925-2018) also won numerous local and regional golf tournaments. Then in 1968 was the Arkansas State Champion. The early 1930's we find Steve Sr. and Jr. working together building a new 9-hole golf course on North O St. This turned out to be "Rolling Knolls Country Club" that opened in 1932 with my father Henry Helbling as Golf Pro. The club house was the original farm home of General Bonneville built in 1866. The second floor served as the Golf Pro's living quarters where I was born in 1934, we lived there until 1941. So, this is my ties to the older Creekmore Family.

What else could one expect but another champion golfer from this background. Carolyn however did not get into the game seriously until college. Then from that time on it started the ball rolling and this just kept falling into the cup! Carolyn moved Dallas, Texas and the winning started. Carolyn Creekmore's golf resume contains a long list of national, international, state and local achievements. She was on the U.S. Ryder Cup Team playing international matches. She won the Women's Texas Golf Amateur Golf Championship 1995 and 1997. She won the 2008 Women's Southern Senior Championship, 2009 was the Ione-Jones Doherty Senior Amateur Champion. She was on 6 USGA State Team competitions. The year 2003 she won the Dallas City Championship, won the Texas Senior Women's Amateur Championship. In 2004 she won the Transnational Senior Women's 4-ball with partner Nancy Fitzgerald, USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship, the Texas Senior Women's Amateur Championship. In 2005 won the Texas Senior Women's Amateur Championship. In 2006 she won the North South Women's Senior Amateur Championship and the Texas Senior Women's Amateur Championships. This all just touches the high spots on Carolyn Creekmore's golf career as I did not list the many runner up and high finishes in the many tournaments due to space required.

With all of this you can see why she was inducted into both Arkansas and Texas Golf Hall of Fame's in 2010!

There is one thing unique about Carolyn Creekmore that sets her apart from all other golfers. That is her regular golfing partner in Dallas is former President, "George W. Bush"! A little ole Fort Smith girl playing golf with the President has to be something special! Not only that she went to Zambia, Africa with others to help clean and repaint a building to be used by the George W Bush Foundation, for a clinic to detect and treat Cancer! Carolyn now is living Florida where her mother and late father settle in later years.
